They were annexed voluntarily back then after the last emperor of China they declared themselves independent but this was never acknowledged by either China or the US. When the People's Republic was formed they included Tibet which caused rebellion. The Chinese army was sent to quell the seperatist movement.

The same situation was going on in Ireland to expel British rule, and recently Texas wanted to secede from the Union yet nobody's protesting to free Texas or Ireland. They didn't welcome China in any way? In 1791 when the Nepalese invaded Tibet, the Emperor of China sent soldiers to defend Tibet, but China never made Tibet pay tribute for defending it. The reason Dalai Lama declared its independence in 1912 was through British influence. In fact the Dalai Lama isn't even the unanimously acknowledge leader of Tibet even by the Tibetans. Btw 90% of the Tibetan population after its "independence" were in serfdom, and the status quo was enforced by the Dalai Lama
