J.S. Bach once traveled to Altenburg to spy on one of his former pupils on the organon, Johann Ludwig Krebs, to find out what he had learned. Krebs was just playing his own fanciful interpretation of the famous "B-A-C-H- Fuge". Bach went off without even saying hello to his former pupil. Years later Bach ("brook" in German) was asked what had gone wrong and he answered that Krebs ("crab" in German), had caught nothing but a single tiny crab in the brook.

Music is about feelings, otherwise it´s academic and empty, or simply kitsch. Bach was a deeply religious man who wanted his compositions to teach virtues and bring people closer to God. We cannot ask Bach what he might have thought about Ben´s interpretation, and it doesn´t really matter now. Music was set in the context of values imposed by the Church establishment which mistrusted and preached against feelings, and Bach was bound by their law, but those times are gone now.

Bach has to be my favorite classical composer and this particular piece is one of my all-time favorites (next to "Air"). I absolutely love the subtle changes in volume in your performance, Ben.
