  • He just solved the problem that a lot of jazz musicians have about playing with a computer or machine (let's say a sequencer), Amazing.

  • HAAAAAAAAAAAA Lady Gaga is very much a textbook definition of digression when it comes to music.

  • Z:%#@@/

  • pat should collaborate with some progressive musicians like lady gaga (piano vertuoso)

  • @algrand90 Yeah right... Lady Gaga is progressive... Fuck u!

  • after hearing "it got me to some places i've never been," now self playing pianos and instruments make perfect sense.

    He's so fucking high.

  • Fantastic concept by a genius totally way ahead of anyone else...but Zappa would be a good soulmate for Metheny, experiment be different take risks be dangerous go out on a limb get risky....superb

  • @WELLBRAN i was just thinking hes like a mix of FZ, Bartok and Hedges...amazing

  • Fascinating : )

  • Way cool! I hope this doesn't mean he will be getting rid of Lyle and the other people who play in the group.

  • Mr. Metheny, being a music geek...THIS IS SO COOL!!!!!!!!! I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DO IT, BUT YOU DO!!!!! P.S. I'm from your hometown.

  • OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!! ESTO ES ASOMBROSO!

  • cool!

  • Buono...molto interessante..!!

  • Pat, get your frets dressed! LOL Great stuff, BTW.

  • @damnhippystfu HAHAHHAHAHA!!!!!!! I know he should get his frets dressed!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! wow! I bet you are a genius like metheny!!!!!!!!HAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is genius!!!!--Check This out!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is genius!!!!

  • So good

  • darn, Pat does it again. He should be voted into the pantheon of Gods so that we may enjoy his music eternally.

  • Unemployment of musicians

  • ぜ・・・全自動・・・だと?

  • @kilamix

    雅、することができます...

    lol

  • this is fantastic

  • wow! the master does it again. Amazing

  • Wow, Total Immersion in your own sound! Way cool!

  • 16 people are just jealous of his hair.

  • Hair.

  • Good, I always love his solo guitar albums

  • This must be every ensemble performer's dream--to have the band do what one actually asks of them.

  • one word...genius of all time

  • Pat has been my hero more than 30 years and I love his every project. But when I saw this first, I got a big shock, could not understand what he does. After I listen it again and again, now I think I understand this extreamly beautiful music. I feel like he is testing us with mischievous smile. "Are you going with me?" "Sure, I'm following you till you stop exploring" I will answer.

  • The title track to this album (first song being played) Orchestrion is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. As a composition it is absolutely gorgeous and Pat wrote it with the "robot" orchestra in mind. It gets stuck in my head so easily and I love it when it does :)

  • 15 people dislike this? That's just pathetic.

  • Hey Pat, what's the first song you performed in the video called?

  • @toyinattic It's called Orchestrion ;)

  • He's obviously one of those guys that doesn't get on with other musicians.

  • @angelstudiosbrisbane

He gets along with many musicians well ... just not Kenny G. :)

  • Yes Pat YOU ARE the Future dude.and yes you can afford to purchase & having this system made for yourself!!!Man i knew you were a scientist!!!

  • Sounds like...

  • Just saw this on CBS This Morning...Damn cool

  • Pat: Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you the ghost's of Lyle Mays, Steve Rodby, Paul Wertico, and Dan Gotlieb! :)

  • Ariel Guzik did this, ten tears ago. A Mexican inventor and composer

  • how does all this stuff work? can someone explain it to me?

  • u niggaz be a buncha haterz. whats good?

  • Talking about time and space relativization...Pat's getting nuts, for real.

on the other hand, I'd love to lock myself up in that room for weeks and play that super rigged guitar till my bloodvessels dry out.

  • It's too bad that Frank Zappa isn't still around. I can imagine some of his more complex compositions, in some bizarre - typically Frank - instrumentation and orchestration, being played with this technology, i.e. G-Spot Tornado, Dog Breath Variations, etc.

  • @Cambodia69 absolutely, that would fit together very well

  • @Cambodia69

Frank + Pat + Pete (Townsend) = A Godly Music.

  • Simply Beautiful...

  • q locooo... (Y)

  • I did like everyone in his band, but this is so cool. I want one.

  • BRILLIANT!

  • just imagine being able to jam with this for an hour

  • @mufc0794

That would be one short hour!! =P

  • genius...

  • It's like a huge guitar pro :D

  • Hauling that stuff around and setting it up has got to be a BITCH.

  • dumpert !

  • has anyone noticed how much frets are scalloped?

how many hours does this guy play guitar?

    I know.........

  • Man, this production must be very cheap......

    genious!!!

  • First, let me say that I love Metheny's music (my own videos can attest to that), but I hope the orchestrion does not become his primary musical platform. I can understand that from Metheny's point of view, why should he hire musicians who may not do exactly what he wants when he can just have a machine do it instead? But is it worth sacrificing those magical highs that can only come separate personalities acting in concert? Anyone else feel the same way I do about this?

  • @daschwarjazz I always thought that "making'' music with others is a chemistry that exceeds the realm of musicality. When we play together (musicians can understand what I want to say) our souls interact in a way that is beyond comprehension. Havent you ever felt the "feel" when you play with a good band? This is why finding band members is so damn difficult. I feel imense respect for Pat and I think when he can inovate after all these years of playing he must be a true talent.

  • This is interesting... good stuff

  • The man is just too good to play with humans..

  • I'm so going to buy this album! Hats off to this brilliant project!

  • This could have gone badly wrong, but it sounds very sensitively done & I shall listen to more of this.

Is this the first time that Pat Metheny has been seen wearing anything other than one of his stripy tops?

  • Pat is THE MAN!!!!

    My god, unbelieveble!

  • That's Amazing, what beaatuful music as well!

  • I think the comment about skynet is what is known as a 'joke'

  • An amazing mixture of traditional and new technology.

  • one day finally people can understand that all is alive we are all one interconected with the MASTER how i call him or GOD as other tell him. is like your organs your cells all of them are part of you, and all existing thing threes robots music etc. all we are just a grain of the MASTER.

  • Amazing!

  • Poor guy had to do all this because he couldn't get anyone to join his band. Just kidding ... this is amazing!

  • Can someone explain me the comment "This is how skynet began"? Pleeease. Thank you!

  • @mishabaikal Terminator 2...it's a joke

  • Pat redefines the term "one man band" What will he think of next. You go Pat

  • AWWW NO WAY!!! IT PLAYS WITH HIM!!

  • Uma banda de um homem só... Isso me impressionou. O que ele quis dizer com Solenóides? Que mecanismo ele usou?

  • certainly a very beautiful sight

  • if you see this comment you are so good at your songs i went to your show in west mass

  • Meu Deus, que maravilha!!!

  • FIM DO MUNDO !!!LOL........

  • If God exist, he/she/it plays with sound. Excelent work Pat. You have done so much to music. Thank You!!!

  • @paquaxin No, God doesn´t exist. We surpassed that primitive superstition. This man is an incredibly creative and talented musician. We humans can be really amazing sometimes..

  • I've been a Pat Metheny fan for many years! He is an Outstanding Musician bar none! I love the way he Expands his Music!

  • I saw this in Detroit...in May 2010 purely scintillating.

  • i love pat metheny's music in its many varied forms, including the orchestrion pieces, but i have to say, i saw this live and i was really disappointed. it appeared that the instruments didn't even have velocity (hardness/loudness) control, or subtle timing control (e.g. non-perfect quantization), this is stuff that could have been implemented with really rudimentary software and i can't understand why they didn't put more work into making the instruments expressive...

  • Saw him in Torrington CT on his last date of this tour.... incredible is all there is to say...

  • @BMWDucatiPhil i almost went to that! since im from Hartford, but i couldnt go cus i had to play in a mandatory concert :( i missed seeing my favorite guitarist ever

  • It's so easy for Pat to verbalize his vision, then attach his artistry to it. It's all very easily understood, yet at the same time it's out of this world complex!

Thank you, Mr. M. You are definitely not getting older, you are getting...better...better .... the Best. WOW.

  • Pat is Phenomenal to say the least very innovative and a great creative mind and what a studio he has it looks like a museum of instruments modern day phantom

of the opera kinda like in a good way.

  • I SAW THIS LAST NIGHT!!!

  • What's great about this is that Pat no longer needs a band.

Kind of like with a test tube baby a woman no longer needs a man.

Musical narcissism? I, I, I? Me, me, me?

Where's the need for a you?

    Yowl cakes...

Thank gawd Travis Barker is still kicking butt on drums...

  • @JoeJacari AH HA HA HA HA. travis barker.. hahahahahahahahahaha.

  • Can Pat over @ Guitar Instructor , guitarinstructor and I can tell you he is more than a great musician

Loving the new music videos !

    Cheers

    Sound Music Video

  • whats the first song that comes on in the begining?

  • @TeaOnTheGuganSlav that's "orchestrion" :] album and songname

  • The Pat Machine-y Group

  • @PutItAway101 BOO!!!! ON U!!!! BOOO!! hes better than that

  • @crewscaine1 What are you on about? It's just a pun. I like this music and think Pat is a genius.

  • Why he uses pick like this ?

  • Pat Metheny....et orchestrion !

  • fruity loops version 10 perhaps.

  • Just got back from the Princeton show. Amazing ! Pats just on another level for creativity. His endless detemination to challenge himself and innovate after all these years. Who does this stuff ???lol Pat !! Of course his classic sound still comes through with that beautiful hollow body:)

  • @schon66 I was there as well! one of the most mind blowing shows I have ever been to. It was amazing to hear the emotion that he was able to garner from robotics. Unbelievable!

  • Sounds like the Pat Metheny Group with machines

  • I saw this on concert last night. During the whole show you just sit there with your jaw open going, OMG, how does this happen???

  • 888 likes yeeeeeeah

  • ROBOT HOUSE!!!!!!

  • Why is even a dislike button here?

  • epoc making

  • It could potentially be used to create revolutionary music without any human performing limitations, but I think the music on the orchestrion CD wouldn't sound that much different if Pat would perform it with the PMG... I really hope he'll be able to unlock more of the orchestrions huge potential and break some real musical boundaries with it in the future, I know he'd be perfectly capable of doing so.

  • You haters make me laugh. Pat is far beyond an established musician and to see someone so passionate continue to grow and evolve is just wonderful.

  • @wolfenbreed Really!

  • @wolfenbreed pat could play anything you handed him ..

  • @wolfenbreed

    Pat is awesome! (from Mizzou)

  • @wolfenbreed fuck em.

  • think of the money he saved on salary. He can and did do what he wanted and that is showing that music is all about timing and it travels so fast....

  • Actually, you know what would be cool. You should let Squarepusher loose on that rig.

  • Pat, you got way too much money. Just buy a sampler like everyone else :)

  • I went to this concert. I found it completely fascinating and inspiring. It was simply different than the experience of Pat with Lyle M and the rest of the band - a different sound - but certainly not disappointing - unless you came into it demanding that Metheny limit his art to what you have been completely used to.

  • This is a first-class jazz guitarist suffering from a mild diversion....like getting ready to do your homework but sharpening every pencil in the house, as well as a few that you borrowed from the neighbors. Here's a guy who could play with practically ANY musician on earth, but chooses to play with a machine...something not quite right there. The overall result is ....disappointing.

  • Reminds me on the stalactite / mites organ concept in Laurel caverns.

  • Quite an interesting concept - looking forward to see that live. Any plans for Europe?

  • I'm most curious to know how the bottles work in all of that.

  • @BiteSizedRose Just came from the concert last night in Peekskill, NY. All of the bottles are tuned (of course) and they make a warm sound almost like an organ. They are subtle but you can hear them. It is interesting to watch as they light up when they are active.

  • @THEBossSound not so much of how they sound, but how they are activated. i assume they are hit somehow because otherwise then i really couldn't figure out how air would blow over them...

  • @BiteSizedRose The blow air over the top as the sound is constant as long as the light is lit, you can hear them. I couldnt get a close look, but there is some fixture at the top and air hoses running behind.

  • @THEBossSound oh okay. that's a really cool concept. too bad it's not louder, but that's awesome that it works at all. even better that you managed to see it!

  • @BiteSizedRose They stereo miced both sets of bottles.

  • There is an advantage to multiple musicians complimenting each other, especially in jazz (and the rare time that they develop a synergy, as PMG does.)

This machine would seem to run against that idea.

It seems that this orchestrion taken with L. Mays other video on youtube for Spectrasonics that both these guys may be going their separate ways...

I wonder if they have some differences that are only now coming to the surface and as they have gotten older are not as tolerate of each other?

  • This is how skynet began

  • hilarious comment.

  • @affablegiraffable LMAO! I never thought of it this way. Seeing this live in Philly at the Keswick, I never thought this could be the beginning of the end! Nice one...

  • y yo amo a Tamykoooo

  • Pat Metheny TE AMOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO con locura y pasion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i like your projet.

    congratulations

denis live in North French near of Maubeuge

  • Very much enjoyed this music video

    Thank you

  • Did some chick break up the band man? Lol.... I'm fanscinated and a little freaked out by this machine. It sounds fantastic... The freaked-out-ness will pass..im sure. Pat can do no wrong in my book.. He's a huge part of my spiritual practice.... PMG's music makes me want to be a better human being.. Mindful to always treat others with love and compassion. Peace n Love

  • Dear lord

Pat Methany Group is sensational , I really love this man's sound and feel

  • Pat is the epitome of musician without guilt or fear. He has been making wonderful noises with a Synclavier as long as I can remember. I will never forget the first time I listened to the Off Ramp album. Such a pleasant journey. Pat is the best at making great music with what is at hand and the Orchestrion is just wonderful. As he says, he is laying tracks down over his own chops and there is that link-up that doesn't happen with multi musicians. You don't like it, you just don't get it.

  • Very cool

  • amazingggggggggggg

  • Just bought tickets for the Princeton show!

  • @NordicSynth Saw the show last night in Peeksill. Be prepared to be amazed.

  • One Man Band.. era su sueño...

  • lol ... local 802 will have a FIT when they find out about this!

  • Pat seems to be trying to make more money by eliminating musicians on his next tour. LOL!

  • Pat is a genius, I know. And this is just an a experiment. The result is unique and a pure jazz created and improvised by himself. But the result is quiet mechanical, even being precise, and lacks emotion. Music is not pure mathematic, but a mixing of things.

  • Pat seems to be a very rational, reasoning, and kind human being, just like his friend Lyle. As I see it, this "crasy professor" project adds an interesting twist and another dimension to that image (much like some of their more experimental compositions do).

  • please, be relax, this is only an example of geniality, machines, human touch, sincronization all of this is music but tell me when another artist do something like this.

don´t forget that Metheny is a gramy award winner many times !

people like him, quincy jones or miles davis have been changed the history in music and any new project they made its an evolution of his creativity.

  • Holy crap! That was amazing and everything I have ever dreamed about as a guitarist. Well done.

I'm almost scared to think of what that cost.

  • "But if you prefer machines playing music

then you are not much of a Jazz fan.

You don't have anything of substance to say. "

Don't you get it? HE is playing ALL of the machines. I like the touch, and that setup would be a blast to jam on. How is this different from synths? Ever watched Chick Corea perform? Two or three computers last I saw him. Metheny is a real musician, as is Chick. They don't just program - they PLAY. Why worry about the instrumentation they use?

  • it's just an experiment u guys dont understand

  • He replaces live musicians with machines.

So, now the future of Jazz is... machines?

At least Kenny G has a real band.

  • @Rexicano this is a single project, 1 album.....it's more compositional than anything. i wouldn't miss Pat Metheny Group or the Pat Metheny Trio for anything, or any quartet he has been in. right now PMG is touring, but in the fall he will do a short orchestrion tour which will probably make peoples' brains explode

  • @HopePoisoned

Sounds like your brain already exploded.

Sorry, I think I'll listen to someone else.

I need to keep using my unexploded brain for a while.

  • @Rexicano Oh dear, please don't be sad and worry about the future of jazz, as long as there are enough people brave enough to make a stupid comment as you did the future of our beloved jazz is secure and safe from bad people like Pat Metheny.

  • @lukat93

Right; I'm sure you are such an expert and can see the future...

but then it's not myself who was crying about what Jazz has become but PM who was so worried about Kenny G.

But if you prefer machines playing music

then you are not much of a Jazz fan.

You don't have anything of substance to say.

  • OMFG he's a genius!!!

  • uauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!

  • Wooooooooooooooow!!!!!!!!!!

  • As a former concert piano tuner (Atlanta Symphony Orchestra) and having rebuilt more than a few players and reproducers, and helped even with a few Orchestrion and nichelodeons - I'm BLOWN AWAY - Pat, WOW, WOW!!!!!

  • Super ))

  • FANTÁSTICO!!!

  • genius...

  • Agreed Zappafile, clearly the project was more of a challenge to Pat and an idea he wanted to explore and flesh out. It does my head in how all this was set-up and achieved. I think he's my favorite guitarist. He's got so much feel when he plays :)

  • he could have just sequenced all this...
