  • oh snapppppppppp :D

  • Slam is one of my favorite songs from David. One of many jazz musicians that I enjoy listening to.

  • Close Up gets it close, but it's not the same as this vid .. one magical moments

  • SLAMMIN" AWESOME MOMMA !!! The key man is RAD and all those who went to the floor ... " I feel ya "

  • ecelente saxofonista

  • I've been playing over 14yrs.Myself.Started not know anything about a saxophone.

I can tell u a very good professional sax player and the Sax mouthpice. Makes very big difference on your sound,.Those don't realize. He's playing very good Mark VI Alto. And very good Bobby Duff Mouthpice. Also having horn very top shape to.Also make him sound very good.Plus not to say long hours of practice he puts in 4 to 6 hours a day.

  • @musicianman2000 That's soo true. Do you know which Dukoff mouthpiece he has? Or which reeds he uses?

  • @MrSaxmanJones .Well that comes down to the player himself..There so many brands out there..Seem to be vintage mouthpice..Seem have no shinny sliver plating on the mouthpice. It could be a Bobby Dukoff or many other ones.I like various ones myself..Plus reed size,Now RicoReeds much more selection of reeds for All sax's

  • @MrSaxmanJones

Back then, he was using a Dukoff D8 that he had modified a bit.......he was also back then using LaVoz Medium reeds....(sometimes Medium Hards). He still uses a Dukoff to this day.

  • Yes,still does use his Dukoff D8 Alto Sax.Vintage mouthpice...Now rico reeds has much more brands to choose from..Also his horn has to be very good shape.to hit Whole range Sax.And good mouthpice and reeds.

  • Who is the guy at the keyboards? I saw a D.S. video at least 20 years ago & he was in that video. I guess a regular in his band. It was on MOR tv a channel with videos that didn't work out. They had a really good video with a funky guy with brogans on without socks & a girl in a red dress dancing with the guy. Does anyone know the name of the video?

  • @nor888vast695 The cat on keys is Ricky Peterson. I Saw Sanborn early last year and yes, he's a Sanborn regular as he was playing keys on that tour (with Joey Defrancesco on Hammond B3). He looks way different now -- but of course, so does Sanborn. Peterson lives in Minneapolis and has worked with Prince. :-)

  • @nor888vast695 Ricky Peterson on the keyboards -not only played live with David but recorded as well. The Peterson family -talented in ways that can't be measured!

  • Only saw him once. Would never guess he had polio.

  • Chuck Norris : GOD SEND ME

David sanborn : i send nobody

  • I want that saxophone

  • @BriansThing I think that is an old Selmer Mark VI...I think you can get one for the price of a good used car about 10 grand...and the mouthpiece is another 1 to 3 grand...this is not a cheap habit

  • @beezo211 do you even know what your talking about? your right about the sax but a mouthpiece for "another 1 to 3 grand"?! only an idiot would ever pay that much for a mouthpiece. usually the most expensive ones run around 600 and even thats a bit of a rip off...im actually interested though what mouthpieces you know of that cost around "1 to 3 grand"

  • PURE ENERGY !!!!! thanks DaaMV.

  • i love it, real people with real feelings about music...

  • The best saxophonist on earth

    Great

  • @fannye81 second best after pharoah sanders no one plays with more feeling then Mr sanders hell hwe even plays it backwards

  • The best saxophonist on earth

  • What!? How dare there be dislikes! >_<

  • is that joey taffola on guitar?

  • At my school we r playing this and big foot definately needs the trumpet and trombone

  • If you guys never seen david sanborn back in the days when he had marcus miller, hiram bullock, eric gale, ron foster, doc gibbs, omar hakim.they were a powerful band that threw down.

  • Typical for a guitarist: celebrating his own sound :D

    01:58

  • i am currently playing this tune with my high school jazz band and i sounds realy good when you add brass i.e trumpet and trombone at the second time you play the b part of this fabulous aaba tune

  • one of the best i've seen, unbelievable!

  • The 18 people who dislikes this must be Justin Bieber fans.....Sorry this is real music.

  • @jkid16 hell yea ;))

  • Je m'en remet une dose ,a la votre...C.Phil.D.

  • excelente el video, pero la música es magistral, no se si les guste sade, pero suena muy similar a lo que toca ella en su música.

  • In my opinion this music is "sex personified"! lol

  • David Sanborn on sax, Richard Patterson (Bass), Ricky Peterson (Keyboards), Mitch Stein (Guitar), Micheal White (Drums) and Don Alias (Percusion). They are great together!

  • One of my favorite musicians. I could listen to him all day.

  • ~magic~ :)

  • Amazing fun bass playing from 7:16 on with the percussionist doing a 'how low can you go' trip w/him. I don't know if there's a story behind what that was all about but it was silly fun nonetheless.

  • Watch my videos with high Sax interpletando Djavan, Ed Motta, Roupa Nova, ... Thank you.

  • can i get this whole gig on cd or dvd? the man is a genius.

  • omg i love this. the sax solo is awesome. what's the name of the drummer?

  • Great music!, I love it ! :)

  • A definite repeat on my I-pod...

  • ahhh the 80s were hilarious

  • @shoeshiner100

    it's from 1993

  • The song really suffers without Marcus Miller on bass.

  • @rgurdal

The whole world suffers on M.Millers "ego-trip".

  • @berkelator

Truely. Fine. Good to know, you noticed that too.

  • great great great

  • guauuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

  • What a fuckin' groovy Song!

  • an awesome song ....

  • love this song. every note he hits is so clear, its just amazing. he is not good just because he can hit a few notes or play fast. the sound and clarity of everything he plays is perfect. probably my favorite sax player of all time.

  • just got an eargasm!

  • Candy Dulfer and David Sanborn are my favorite alto sax players, if you don't know Candy dulfer, you should check out the song: lilly was here

  • @MisterySven18 You are right that was very good.

  • Michael Brecker is my all time favourite tenor player (god rest his soul). Do you know where he got his inspiration...from no other than Mr Sanborn...I loved him 20 yrs ago...love him more now. What a sound.

  • loved his music for twenty odd years. 'straight to the heart' is a good place to start, along with 'close up'. the collaboration with marcus miller is the key to the funk.

  • David Sanborn and Pat Metheny have the same barber!!!! Love it!!!!!!

  • is that victor wooten on bass?

  • i think its richard patterson

  • dave sanborn es increible!!!!! lo mejor de lo mejor su sonido es rico y su improvisación es sorprendente!!!!!

  • estaban re limando los forros

  • Hermoso

  • omg!!!!awesome!!!

  • jesus F christ !!! this guy is more fun than a rapper on weed freestyling xD i love him !

  • crazy nice ! です.

  • i love this music :D!!!!!!!!!!!

  • soul music :D

  • I've seen David Sanborn in concert a couple of times. I like his funk/soul numbers. I remember when "Slam" first came out, I played the living hell out of that CD. You know what makes this music so good...? REAL INSTRUMENTS!!! Not those compuertized/synthesized numbers you hear these days.

  • @SouLoveReal I didn't realise that an electric keyboard wasn't a computerized device that produced synthesized sounds anymore.

  • he's talking about brass, drums, and so forth

  • @GoneShootinBoardsIe

You know what he means bro; Cut him som slack he is right; no mfkn microwaved music even if it is all equalised or wartever the Fk had to go through it for the pleasure of your ears LOL.

  • @SouLoveReal

Herbie Hancock can make his art aswell on the piano as on the synthesizer. It's not the naturally generated sound, that makes art, it's the ability of the artist.

To get rid of those "little princes", musical industries switch the audience to a "low" taste, so the "artists" can be changed montly.

Otherwise the problem is, you can't replace David Sanborn, if his opinion diverted from rhe managment's.

  • @SouLoveReal I be to differ. I think that it takes more than just instrument or computers to make a great song, it takes a real musician, where he plays the saxophone, raps, deejays, play the piano or whatever

  • @SouLoveReal - I agree / except that computer generated sounds can be amazing to, it just needs to be refined into instruments - there will be alot of "digitized" instruments coming out in the future.

They still require an amazing level of skill but essentially these instruments can play any sound, any range.

  • The bass player is Richard Patterson.

  • Thats music - thx ;-)

  • and hes high :D

  • He owns the place. Seriously

  • The guitarist is Mitch Stein

  • Our Jazz Ensemble is playing this...oh my goodness, I can't wait!!

    *Female Trumpet Player*

  • I think the guitar player's called Dean Brown. I thought he sounded like Steve Lukather when I first watched this!:P

  • who's on the keyboard/synth?

  • Who is the guitarplayer???

  • Who's the bassist? He's got funk running through his hands!

  • i'm pretty sure with that one of a kind white beauty of a bass that would be nathan east.

  • Tom Barney I think

  • Az bizony XD

  • Dögös zene!

  • david sanborn is amazing. Im not sure if hes currently the best alto sax out there. i personally think eric marienthal is.

  • Im playin this on tenor.... its hard cuz half of it is altissimo.

  • Opening sounds like Seinfeld Shreds.

  • @mullbenkt true! :)

  • this is banging

  • wtf, gay kennyg type shit

  • david is the best i really love her music so funky and very sexy and we both love it guys

  • Has anyone got "this masquerade" by David Sanborn. I would like to see it posted.

  • This album I thought set the stage for not only Sanborn, but, was a showcase for bassist Marcus Miller. Eventhough he's not in this performance you can feel his influence driving the instrumentation still. Great live performance!

  • David's totaly the master of the sax. ...best tone in the world, nobody would disagree!

  • this is such a big slice of the 80s, from the synth-like guitar rhythms and massive drum sound to the van halen-esque solo and the porn groove sax

  • Sandborns set up is:

Selmer Mark VI Alto Saxophone Bobby Dukoff D8 Super Power Chamber LaVoz medium

  • selmer are good saxophones!! :)

  • David is my mentor. He was the first sax player I heard and said I want to play like that! Thanks David

  • i want to play sax but i cant afford and my breath is not to deep bcoz im a smoker but I always listen to smooth jazz by sanborn

  • you're an ass hole

  • fuck you

  • I'm a huge hard rock, heavy metal fan and my wife had to drag me to see David Sanborn on this tour. Maybe the best concert and group of musicians I've ever seen.

  • @cfjcfb good musicianship will always get you to where metal, rock, hard, etc cant... that is to the deepest of your inner self.

  • @cfjcfb I love heavy music/death metal too, and I find this song one of the heaviest songs ive ever heard.

  • Comment removed

  • @cfjcfb Same here man

  • @cfjcfb You are sooooo Lucky... I wish I could see david on a tour. It would be amazing to see him play!!

  • Fabulous

  • Awesome!

  • I love David Sanborn! All your musicians are excelents. Amazing song!

  • THE BEST DAVID SANBORN!

  • awsome! A lot of great musicians up in there. Loved the keyboardist, very groovy and flamboyant.

  • The Keyboard player is Ricky Peterson

  • ohhhhhh yeeeeah

  • Whose the keyboardist? He's got some real passion in his playing

  • Must be Ricky Peterson?

  • I'm too new to the Sax to transcribe it so can someone with some skills help?

  • dowload TRANSRIBE program...

  • Ufff Excellent David Sanborn, THE BIG SANBORN!!!!

  • So, can someone list the first notes on the melody David is playing? I can't find sheet music for this under $50...

  • Take yourself some time to transcribe. It's really good practice. I've had trouble with transcriping, but once you transcribe a few tunes, you get the feel of it.

  • F# C# B A

    C# E F# E G# G# F# E

    F# C# B A F# A B C# E C# B A

    etc.

Haven't tested them but I'm pretty sure of them. Good luck with it. I suck at rythm so transcribing isn't my thing either ;)

  • Hey SgtVlking, it's all the artist that is David Sanborn... Having a vintage Selmer Mark VI alto and Dukoff metal 7* mouthpiece don't hurt either! David's the ultimate alto saxophonist! When I grow up, I wanna have 1/2 the chops that he has!!!

  • sanborn looks a bit bored up there

  • WOW this is effin wild

  • I freaking love this does anyone know where I could learn how to play this on saxophone?

  • Same place Dave did...take lessons and get experience.

  • yeah i could play it, i just can't figure it out by ear lol

  • You can learn to play it with these two great things on the edges of your head....

Seriously, it's not hard to learn by ear. Key of Fsharp minor on alto.

  • cool, how did you figure out what key its in? is it just by practicing playing by ear? cool thanks ill try it see if i can get it now

  • Yeah. I figured it out on sax and guitar. It's a great song to play. It's not really technical, it's just the altissimo that really gets you :P

  • HOLY SHIT!!! How does he get that sound?! I haven't listened to him much before (only what he did with Clapton, and that's not a lot of sax), but man! How does he do it? Anyone?

  • It's all in the mouthpiece. And a good embouchure never hurt. What I'm wondering is what he's doing to make the sound at 5:55

  • Play altissimo A, (2nd and 3rd finger on left hand) open and close the keys in your right hand rapidly.

  • 5:55 is a combination of altissimo and using different fingerings to slightly lower or raise the pitch. Ha, not entirely sure myself :P

  • wow this rockss !!! i cant stop playing it !!

  • der sound vom sax is so richtig fett geil so richtig breit und fett 5 s babarisch geiler sound!!

  • this is really, really an amazing performance!

  • Saw him in concert mid 80's...a true talently showman!

  • Such a great performance and only 155.000 views...I can't believe that!

    Slam is awesome!!!

  • considering he also plays mellower stuff and grea ballads it's hard to see why people would listen to kenny g

  • most vocal player on alto.

he's melodic and creates amazing tension and release without all the cliche out licks of today.

  • Well put

  • I say kick out all keyboard players. YOU'RE FIRED!

  • i agree the guy looks like a tool

  • yeah, he looks like Axel Rose, if Axel Rose played keyboards, hahaha

  • is he using altissimo during the chorus or any other repeated parts?

  • david sanborn is nasty and an absolutely incredible alto player but lets be honest this song is a joke could you imagine watching an entire set of this band? jesus christ

  • well it depends on wat you consider good i tink david sanborn sucks

  • Amazing sax, amazing sax playing - this guy is incredible - have no idea wtf was (NOT) going on with the bass tho....Sanborn is so bored he's looking at his sax lol!

  • ....arghhh....its richard patterson on bass.

  • I'm not quite sure, but it could be Gary Grainger, at least the sound is really alike. . .

  • Comment removed

  • omfg!!! amazing. sanborn is a living legend #1. #2 idk about anyone else but thats probably the best bassist ive ever heard. the only thing that would have made this performance better would have been a sick shredding guitar solo :) im mad they didnt give the guitarist some

  • bass solo! o.O

  • just amazing!

  • This is magic! One of the four best instrumental pieces ever! IMHO, this would include, "Mr Pink" (Level 42), "Love's Theme" (Barry White) and "Breezin" (George Benson).

  • What about Frankenstein by Edgar Winter?

  • What about it? Bogan Rock rubbish as far as I'm concerned! My ears still haven't recovered from listening to it! I'm talking about music with some SOUL & RHYTHM, man!!

  • I truly love his playing. I've seem him twice and it just amazes me how good he and his band are. Its so good, its spiritual.

One of my favourite parts of any song/music of all time is his sax playing on Bowie's Young American.

  • try his latest album "here & gone"

  • Voting for Bush a second time would have been a BAD MOVE,all i did was express an opinion

  • Personally, i think you can't compare Charlie Parker and David Sanborn. They both play two totally different styles. Plus, they are both amazing saxophonist, better then anyone on here, so who are we to judge them on their playing ability?

  • ..it aint marcus..and it aint nathan east...its richard patterson.

  • That's a very cool tune!
