Yes,still does use his Dukoff D8 Alto Sax.Vintage mouthpice...Now rico reeds has much more brands to choose from..Also his horn has to be very good shape.to hit Whole range Sax.And good mouthpice and reeds.
I've been playing over 14yrs.Myself.Started not know anything about a saxophone.
I can tell u a very good professional sax player and the Sax mouthpice. Makes very big difference on your sound,.Those don't realize. He's playing very good Mark VI Alto. And very good Bobby Duff Mouthpice. Also having horn very top shape to.Also make him sound very good.Plus not to say long hours of practice he puts in 4 to 6 hours a day.
@MrSaxmanJones .Well that comes down to the player himself..There so many brands out there..Seem to be vintage mouthpice..Seem have no shinny sliver plating on the mouthpice. It could be a Bobby Dukoff or many other ones.I like various ones myself..Plus reed size,Now RicoReeds much more selection of reeds for All sax's
Back then, he was using a Dukoff D8 that he had modified a bit.......he was also back then using LaVoz Medium reeds....(sometimes Medium Hards). He still uses a Dukoff to this day.

Who is the guy at the keyboards? I saw a D.S. video at least 20 years ago & he was in that video. I guess a regular in his band. It was on MOR tv a channel with videos that didn't work out. They had a really good video with a funky guy with brogans on without socks & a girl in a red dress dancing with the guy. Does anyone know the name of the video?
@nor888vast695 The cat on keys is Ricky Peterson. I Saw Sanborn early last year and yes, he's a Sanborn regular as he was playing keys on that tour (with Joey Defrancesco on Hammond B3). He looks way different now -- but of course, so does Sanborn. Peterson lives in Minneapolis and has worked with Prince. :-)
@nor888vast695 Ricky Peterson on the keyboards -not only played live with David but recorded as well. The Peterson family -talented in ways that can't be measured!
@BriansThing I think that is an old Selmer Mark VI...I think you can get one for the price of a good used car about 10 grand...and the mouthpiece is another 1 to 3 grand...this is not a cheap habit
@beezo211 do you even know what your talking about? your right about the sax but a mouthpiece for "another 1 to 3 grand"?! only an idiot would ever pay that much for a mouthpiece. usually the most expensive ones run around 600 and even thats a bit of a rip off...im actually interested though what mouthpieces you know of that cost around "1 to 3 grand"
If you guys never seen david sanborn back in the days when he had marcus miller, hiram bullock, eric gale, ron foster, doc gibbs, omar hakim.they were a powerful band that threw down.
i am currently playing this tune with my high school jazz band and i sounds realy good when you add brass i.e trumpet and trombone at the second time you play the b part of this fabulous aaba tune
David Sanborn on sax, Richard Patterson (Bass), Ricky Peterson (Keyboards), Mitch Stein (Guitar), Micheal White (Drums) and Don Alias (Percusion). They are great together!
Amazing fun bass playing from 7:16 on with the percussionist doing a 'how low can you go' trip w/him. I don't know if there's a story behind what that was all about but it was silly fun nonetheless.
love this song. every note he hits is so clear, its just amazing. he is not good just because he can hit a few notes or play fast. the sound and clarity of everything he plays is perfect. probably my favorite sax player of all time.
Michael Brecker is my all time favourite tenor player (god rest his soul). Do you know where he got his inspiration...from no other than Mr Sanborn...I loved him 20 yrs ago...love him more now. What a sound.
loved his music for twenty odd years. 'straight to the heart' is a good place to start, along with 'close up'. the collaboration with marcus miller is the key to the funk.
I've seen David Sanborn in concert a couple of times. I like his funk/soul numbers. I remember when "Slam" first came out, I played the living hell out of that CD. You know what makes this music so good...? REAL INSTRUMENTS!!! Not those compuertized/synthesized numbers you hear these days.
You know what he means bro; Cut him som slack he is right; no mfkn microwaved music even if it is all equalised or wartever the Fk had to go through it for the pleasure of your ears LOL.
Herbie Hancock can make his art aswell on the piano as on the synthesizer. It's not the naturally generated sound, that makes art, it's the ability of the artist.
To get rid of those "little princes", musical industries switch the audience to a "low" taste, so the "artists" can be changed montly.
Otherwise the problem is, you can't replace David Sanborn, if his opinion diverted from rhe managment's.
@SouLoveReal I be to differ. I think that it takes more than just instrument or computers to make a great song, it takes a real musician, where he plays the saxophone, raps, deejays, play the piano or whatever
@SouLoveReal SocialSax is a new saxophone community. Feel free to join and meet other saxophonists from all around the world! Free backing tracks and music sheets, like dave koz, kenny g. Upload videos and music to your profile! Show others!
@SouLoveReal - I agree / except that computer generated sounds can be amazing to, it just needs to be refined into instruments - there will be alot of "digitized" instruments coming out in the future.
They still require an amazing level of skill but essentially these instruments can play any sound, any range.
This album I thought set the stage for not only Sanborn, but, was a showcase for bassist Marcus Miller. Eventhough he's not in this performance you can feel his influence driving the instrumentation still. Great live performance!

What about it? Bogan Rock rubbish as far as I'm concerned! My ears still haven't recovered from listening to it! I'm talking about music with some SOUL & RHYTHM, man!!
Personally, i think you can't compare Charlie Parker and David Sanborn. They both play two totally different styles. Plus, they are both amazing saxophonist, better then anyone on here, so who are we to judge them on their playing ability?

It's all in the mouthpiece. And a good embouchure never hurt. What I'm wondering is what he's doing to make the sound at 5:55

Play altissimo A, (2nd and 3rd finger on left hand) open and close the keys in your right hand rapidly.

What about it? Bogan Rock rubbish as far as I'm concerned! My ears still haven't recovered from listening to it! I'm talking about music with some SOUL & RHYTHM, man!!

I truly love his playing. I've seem him twice and it just amazes me how good he and his band are. Its so good, its spiritual.
One of my favourite parts of any song/music of all time is his sax playing on Bowie's Young American.

Personally, i think you can't compare Charlie Parker and David Sanborn. They both play two totally different styles. Plus, they are both amazing saxophonist, better then anyone on here, so who are we to judge them on their playing ability?
