two very interesting books to read concerning Andrew Cohen is the book written by his own mother (Luna Tarlo) called Mother of God and another book by a long time exdisciple of Cohens William Yenner called American Guru where both people give very vivid portariats of the almost Godlike Worship Andrew required of his disciples to display and act towards him and the physical emotional and financial abuse that resulted...under no circumstances do u worship another man worship belongs to god alone

the idea of surrendering yourself to a supposed enlightened Guru and he will help u achieve enlightment is incredibly dangerous , u never surrender your whole being and decision making to another man no matter how enlightened u may think he is(in this case self proclaimed Enlightnext teacher Cohen and Genpo both of these suposed masters have shown that they preach one thing but act in another manner (Genpo in his sexual relationships with his students and Cohen his suposed moni abuse of his)

I find it interesting that Dennis Merzel (formerly known as Genpo Roshi) was cheating on his wife (and kids) with his students during the time this video was produced. (three students over the past five years). Also interesting: Andrew Cohen is known for being highly abusive with his students in a variety of ways. This Integral Life, Big Mind, EnlightenNext crap is looking more like Scientology or some similar cult everyday.

Students manipulating teachers into confirming ego preferences shouldn't be fed. But too much submitting can also just be another way for the student to manipulate the teacher.  Or vice versa. I regularly, unintentionally try this shit with various teachers. They don't buy it. Or get me to buy anything. ahem.

@Santiagojimenezb No. I've had 2 Zen teachers. I never felt that I submitted to them in any way. They would not allow such behavior. No decent Zen teacher ever would allow a student to submit to her/him. What Genpo is saying here is pure nonsense in terms of Zen. He ought to know this, and I suspect he does know it. This is some seriously dangerous stuff because submission means you submit without question. That can lead to some very bad things.

@doubtboy Yes, submission does sound very dangerous and scary. It would require some kind of impossible trust. Kind of like taking a step from a 100 foot pole. Have you ever thought that in this case submission doesn't mean that you are submitting to the teacher's personality but rather to the realization itself ? to the Buddha Dharma ? maybe in some way we are submitting to our true self ?

Genpo is thirsting for recognition. He emanates this. Still skeptical about Cohen's proclamation of Guruship but at least he radiates a humility. He is actually, at one point trying to give Genpo a subtle hint about humility but Genpo is too busy being enlightened to pick up on it.

Any teacher worth his salt knows that in the end a spiritual teacher never teaches anything, that all they can do is help students remove their own blocks to what they ALREADY are. As Ramana Maharshi said "the real teacher is within." When the ego is near defeat, it keeps itself alive by convincing the mind it can be a "teacher." The mind grasps this and the ego lives on. Both of these guys are stuck at that point. You can see they each LOVE being a so-called teacher.

Sadly, the verticalization of relationships leads to the spiritualization of our energy flow. This is countercurrent to the need to manifest our energy in the material plane as it is required.

Only the ego, with it's reflective nature, believes that it can play both ends against the middle. Energy flows with potential gradients. From more rarified to more dense. We are the material receptacle. We manifest.

Density is only a bad thing if you are not transparent.

the dualistic framework of the dialogue established by AC (teacher higher than student, spirit higher than personality) denies that this very life & moment is the buddhadharma & that nothing is actually received in dharma transmission though something may well be expressed by the teacher, which already exists within the student and only has to be realised not got. from that perspective teacher is not a spicket but mirror, you dont need to get under a mirror unless it is horizontal face downl.

Re. 5.30 or so - thats perfectly ok, Master; I dont give a shit about you as a person either; I simply see you as a potential means for my enlightenment. Then the continuation of the Dharma will be guaranteed and you will be as important to the universe as a dried up turd. This might seem a little disrespectful at first, but it will almost certainly flush out any remaining shadow elements in the masters psyche. He will thank you for it one day.
