True inspiration. Jon hasn't gone anywhere. He still lives in everyone who he touched. And that includes all of us that have seen this even once. Godspeed Jon
I watched this a thousand times. And yet every time I feel low or need inspiration I come back to this video. He embodies the greatest parts of the human condition.
Blazeman, you have been and continue to be an inspiration to me and so many others. Your courage has touched countless lives. If you're not a warrior and a hero then I don't know who is.
After a lifetime wresting with despair, addiction, and shame I came to the absurdly simple realization that life has only the possibility of meaning and it is within us to create it. I started training with a 25 meter swim. A year later I am six days from my first full triathlon. I have swam, biked, and run thousands upon thousands of miles threw heat and cold and rain. After the first time someone called me an inspiration I knew that I would rather die than fail to cross this finish line.
I just showed this video to my daughter because she asked me why Chrissie rolled at the end of Timberman 2010, (My first half ironman). She is 23 years old with an artist's heart and loved his warrior poetry and his story. As his mother I hope you take some comfort from knowing that he continues to inspire warrior poets to live life to the fullest!!
@runiac2 ...Thank you for these kind words and the kindness...
August is a very difficult time, Jon's birthday the 30th and 3yrs ago we celebrated his life on the 31st...your act of kindness is so very much appreciated.
I don't have ALS, but I just today scheduled brain surgery for two months from now for a recurrent tumor that is threatening my life. It has disabled me in so many ways, but I take courage from others who triumph over challenges that most people never see. Thank you for living fully no matter what is in the way, Jon! You are fortunate to have so many people loving and supporting you. Thank you for the strength you passed to me.

Was just reading Chrissie Wellington's blog and was intrigued when she mentioned 'I rolled for Jon'. So I looked it up and discovered the story of the Blazeman.
Put simply, I'm doing my first Olympic Triathlon in a month's time and will carry Jon with me to remind me that I can always push further and harder than I think I can.
I am 2 days away from my first triathlon. Blazeman is my inspiration, his courage and approach to his ultimate challenge makes me very humble. I will be wearing 179 in your honour Jon and will remember your inspirational words forever.... this is it...my life...and it will be on film thanks to you!
This weekend at Xterra, I rolled for you again. My girlfriend wore the 'Ask Me About The Blazeman" t-shirt. And they did. Blazeman, you are not forgotten.
Blaisman: Has it really been that long since 10-15-5? It was just a moment ago. A long way to be sure, but not so far that I have forgotten. Tommorrow, Xterra. It starts...my War on ALS.-Lavaman
@Lavaman3682 ...Mo chuisle, "pulse of my heart",..."I as all the PALS(people with ALS) thank you for your personal involvement in the War On ALS...your roll is the symbol of my message, "awareness and a cure"...thank you for being an echo in our War..."so others may live". -blazeman.
It is hard to believe that five years have passed since 2005. Many of us never met Jon Blais, but I think like a lot of the people here, I still think about Jons story, and his words and the example that he set for all of us when he finished the 2005 Ironman. Rest in peace Jon. Best regards.
Just wanted to let you know that I work in corporate wellness and have showed this video to encourage our employees to become more active. Not because Jon completed an Ironman, but because we tend to forget how lucky most of us are with perfectly good health. Take a walk, ride a bike, go for a swim. Enjoy life because you can. A true inspiration to remind us that we only have today and we need to make the most of it. Your son is a constant reminder of this. God Bless.
Thank you...agreed...jon would be the first to say, as he did, "the meaning of life is to live life"...to live in the moment, and to savor each and every one of them...it is after all, "what we have, what we all have".
Thank you for taking the time to share with us...especially your kindness for our son, our "braveheart".
The True Meaning of Life! John Blais sums it up. Aside from the amazing editingand inspirational music you can't get past the fact that Jon Blais was an amazing man who was able to share his gift of life with the rest of us. I raced Ironman Louisville 2009 and Jon was one of my biggest motivators. I have been fortunate to have a perfectly healthy body but I aspire to be more like Jon. God Bless him for living and showing others how.
I have no words for what you and your family have gone through and still deal with. But I hope it helps you to know that your son's story has helped me deal with MS. This year I am running Ironman Canada, and I will carry his spirit and story with me to the finish line.
@spinathon Thank you for a little clarification on that quote of John's. I always took it to mean "stop hoping for someone else to get it done, and start getting it done yourself."
Blaisman: It's Lavaman, aka a Hawai'ian Warrior-Poet. I was there in Kona in '05. Your example carried me though grad school. Your words are on my wall; your bracelet is on my wrist every day. Yes, I will fight for you. My War on ALS begins in 2010. Xterra. Iman 70. Then full Ironman. I haven't forgotten my promise to you and your cause. You were strong in all the broken places.
I don measure life by how many breahs a person takes, but by the number of moments that take their breath away.....Although he died to young im sure he left this earth feeling like he hit life a pretty good lick
When we think of "tough" we think of Boxing or MMA John Wayne, but the real bad asses are ppl like Jon Blais who show courage and will in a fight they know they have no chance of winning and there's no traineror ref to toss in the towel
blazemanmom, after seeing and hearing the story of Jon at Rev3 and Timberman and getting into the tri world this summer, I don't go a day without thinking of him. Stay strong, keep inspiring, the Blais family is making a difference in the world, no doubt about that.
I survived a bad car wreck & have a spine full of screws & rods. Because of the Warrior Poet's story, I found determination and a fight inside me that I never knew I had. I finished Ironman Augusta 70.3 this weekend; my first triathlon ever because of your son's amazing story. Thank you for touching my life Blazeman! -Brian
Blais Mom- I hear Ironman, I think of Jon... I was his neighbor on Utah Street and when I find myself feeling lazy, I think of Jon picking on me!! It seems so long ago, but I just wanted you to know my thoughts come back to that energetic optimistic example of a person I knew in CA. My heart goes out to you - for a loss so unfair.
Susan (Jon called me Susie) I never corrected him :) Mine was the big window you had to pass to get to his door. He would pick on me. "Open blinds means Susie is happy and social, closed blinds means leave her alone." :)
We used to crack each other up with the East-Coast attitudes! You know the mortuary behind our place... It was either me or Jon yelling at them to "Shut Up!" at 3am HAHA
Anyway - I might have met you ONCE... I have a terrible memory and moved out before Jon left for home. :(
Mrs. Blais, I am sure that the hurt will never go, but take great pride in the job that you and your Husband have done in bringing up a boy who became a great man amongst men. A beacon of hope to many, someone who has lit a thousand dark moments for people with his strength and determination. I am a firm believer that if you can be remembered for changing one life you'll never be dead. Jon is one of those people. Well done and live strong.
Blazeman: I am STILL mad at you for making me cry, boy. But I carry your example in my heart. In 2005 I witnessed the incredible. Now, in 2009, I have begun to follow your footsteps.
To everyone who watches these videos, just do it. Join the War on ALS. You CAN do it.
To the Blais family: When things get tough, there are people all over the world now who look to your John's example for courage. Not a bad way to be remembered.
My name is Tiffany and I want to share in the joy or John's life and legacy. My husband, Greg, was lucky enough to be presented John's number 179 at this weekends Timberman Ironman in New England!! God picked the perfect person. Our family has endured very similar tragedys and continues to advocate any LIFE!! Please visit Katelyn Joy Derstine "FLY HIGH" webpage and Casa de Mariposa..which is a vacation home in honor of my neice in Siesta key...all BUTTERFLIES...a sign!! XOXO TIFF
Yes, some typos, New Hampshire!! Also, note..our family shares John's ideas on "Getting it on Film" and remembering every moment. Unfortunately, I could not be with Greg this weekend as visited my sister, Bambi, who lost her daughter Katelyn in 2006.. However, the visit was something extremly important as Katleyn "Scrapbooked every moment of her life"..literally every napkin, every wristband from fairs, traffic, etc.. So, knowing Greg is #179 was meant to be!!
Unfortunately, I can not say all I want in 400 words!! LOL..I wanted to share also how touched I was learning that both at the same time my husband, Greg, went through the finish line with #179 this weekend, my sister Bambi was doing a public service announcement in Sarasota on being a breast cancer survivor...She was diagnosed one year after her daughter, katelyn, was killed....also on her birthday!!! What we endure! So, my message is to share, let you know we are "!"xo
lately ive been feeling down the last 2 days have been hell for me all cause of a girl everything i do i think of her it kills my soul to know we are no more but this makes me feel like the world is not so bad it shows me and encourages me to be strong and carry on and be the better man i am. this video is my fave of all time and i thank Jon Blais for his words and i admire him for his strength not only in tri but in heart. needless to say this made my day.
I'm sitting here sobbing at my PC. I am doing a half-Ironman in a few weeks, I'll think of Jon when the going get's tough. I can only hope I would be able face Jon's mountain with as much positivity and grace - not sure I could. A classy gent. I'll be looking into doing something for ALS.
Kubrick 767, And believe he will be there for you...he would tell you to concentarte on the matter at hand, listen to your body, you've prepared well...it will repsond when you ask...be patient be safe and have fun..."take it all in, and whatever you do get it on film". -blazeman.
Have a great race,,,,
In Strength, Honor and Freedom,
Thank you for: "Remembering the -blazeman...Ironman's_Braveheart".
A week tomorrow I'll do my first Ironman. Over the last few months I've watched this video just to keep going, whenever I've felt low, or if the training wasn't going that well.
Whenever I need strength in next week's race, Blazeman will be one of the first people I think of.
Mo...Cuishla, "your blood"...a new and little "warrior" entered the world on 5/29/09he is in his own battle, he is being tested, share your strength, take his hand and fight with him as "warrior poets" do, keep him well and safe.
Wednesday, May 27 marks the 2 yr passing of Jon...please take a moment at 08:35PM EST and give a shout of FREEDOM for Jon and all other PALS that have passed...
Will do... albeit a couple days late. Not sure what it is, but something periodically draws me to this video for personal inspiration. Jon is a special person.
JB: I was there when it happened. And I -will- pay you back in my Ironman event(s) to come. Your example has carried me though 3 years of grad school.
I know you are gone. But in the hearts of everyone who sees these videos, becomes a Blazeman Warrior, buys a bracelet, or just clicks "Send" with this video attached...
Jon, tomorrow six Blazeman Warriors will toe the line at the Boston Marathon, this is the second year that the foundation is there as a Unit, all will have you with them, in essence you are there.
Keep them strong and safe...as you were asked, now they are asked..."be my arms, my legs and my voice...roll for awareness and a cure...call out freedom...freedom from ALS.
Mo...Cuishla, "my blood", "what they do tomorrow, echos in eternity"...-blazeman.
Hey man I love the poem, very inspirational, I use this as inspiration for training to complete my first Ironman, which is still a long way off, but still close as well
.. you are beautifull people .. all of you mom and dad ... i hope everything will be fine for you ... im from athens greece ..if you come here .. just say
I hope you find comfort that others still come back to this video as well... for personal inspiration. I never met Jon and will never compete in an Ironman or even a marathon. However, Jon's story touches me very deeply. Jon is a special person who will forever influence my life.
Saturday, 3 yrs almost to the day, warriors will be joining you in the fight against ALS.
The 2009...Cycle for ALS...Indoor...(Ride-A-Thon), many will be remembering your call of the (multi-sport) athletes, to join together, raise awareness, find a cure.
Jon, your call of "Freedom"...Freedom from ALS, will be heard.
The word is freedom and the goal is to destroy ALS.
Miss you more each day,
Love,
Mom, Dad, Jen, Jason and especially "little Anna", she knows you Jon.
I have mny second Triathlon on Sunday so I thought I would watch this and get that boost I need to get through the miles. I wish I could have met him. Thank God for the time he spent with us.
i went to the same high school as the blazeman, and my senior year, he came in and talked to our class. I saw him about a year before he passed away, and it was one of the most touching experiences of my life, by the end of his speech, everyone was in tears.
Every time I watch this video, I always become a crying baby. I´m training to do my first Ironman in 2009 or 2010, and I´d like to wear a shirt that reminds Blazeman. Can somebody help me? Send me a message. Thanks.
Blazeman and family - I'm racing my second tri (only an olympic) this weekend. You're one of the reasons I got into this sport. I'll be thinking about you out on the course.
In 2005 at the Ironman World Championship, in the begining of the War On ALS, you fought your battle of Sterling, you won your fight and you passed the torch.
In Orange County, Ca, on June 29th the OCBlazeman was held for the second time, the Ryan family summonded the clans for battle and they came...150+ Blazeman Warriors fought their battle of Sterling and won, "the cause was bigger than the self"..."they rolled for awareness and a cure, they were "Warrior Poets".
I will be competing the 2008 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in 2 days. I will roll myself at the finish line to raise the awareness of ALS. Miss you my friend!
On May2,2005 Jon's diagnosis of ALS was confirmed. May27,2007 he passes away. I am still in awe of what he accomplished in those 2 years. He completed Ironman 18 months into his disease, started the Blazeman Foundation for ALS and could still laugh for most of that time!
What an inspiration to all! Nobody should ever complain "I cant quit smoking, or I can't lose weight"...look what your son accomplished. I'm sorry he passed and the pain you endure in missing him. Know that his video is touching many hearts and lives. Also, please consider a PAYPAL link on his ALS fundraiser site. Thanks for allowing his wonderful achievements and spirit to be shared by many.
Watching you again tonight buddy and missing you...
Dad, Jenn and I are working hard to keep spreading awareness of ALS-every week we hear of another fallen warriorpoet. Come on world-let's at least find a decent treatment!!
BLAZEMAN is the best!!!! RIP... I am doing my first ironman in april in arizona. Watching this video gets me out there training and brings tears to my eyes. He is a true hero and inspiration!!!! Blazemanmom, my thoughts and prayers are with you guys and Jon is with all of us triathletes when training and racing. His spirit will live on forever! You guys raised an unbelieveable son and person!!!
I still watch this video all the time. I chanted his poem the last couple miles of the marathon when I thought I wouldn't make it. He is the sort that makes you believe you can achieve anything. A true inspiration.
Jon Blais is truly the greatest inspiration any athlete can have. I think about him every time before I go out on a run or bike. You can and will always keep going with Blazeman alongside you.

Hi Blazemanmom & Dad,
Just wanted to let you know that I work in corporate wellness and have showed this video to encourage our employees to become more active. God Bless.
Suckitupandlive 1 year ago 6

Susan (Jon called me Susie) I never corrected him :) Mine was the big window you had to pass to get to his door. He would pick on me. "Open blinds means Susie is happy and social, closed blinds means leave her alone." :)

Hello Again,
Yes, some typos, New Hampshire!!
Blessings #179 xo

Unfortunately, I can not say all I want in 400 words!! LOL..I wanted to share also how touched I was learning that both at the same time my husband, Greg, went through the finish line with #179 this weekend, my sister Bambi was doing a public service announcement in Sarasota on being a breast cancer survivor...She was diagnosed one year after her daughter, katelyn, was killed....also on her birthday!!! What we endure! So, my message is to share, let you know we are "!"xo
