oh how it has changed over the years! now universal has harry potter world, suess landing, toon ville, and sooooo much more! wow! i cannot wait to visit in the new year!!! (of 2012). GO UNIVERSAL STUDIOS!!!!! lol.
when I was dating my then high school girlfriend we took her and her brother down there and it was great but, this was like 1994....great time was had! aaah i miss old Universal
Man do I miss some of Orlando from this time. I've lived in the city since 1998, but came to the parks 5 times from 1987 to 1997. The parks and the city used to be so much less crowded and a lot of things were so new. Looking at the Universal area like this is a rare treat. It's so overbuilt and crowded over now.
Thank you for posting this. It brought back great memories. I was part of the Opening Day Crew also. Remember all the special parties and events? It was neat to be able to ride the rides before anyone else did. (When they worked HaHa!!)

I remember that old Hardrock Cafe...it was shaped like a gigantic guitar. You wouldn't happen to have any footage from the Alfred Hitchcock attraction would you?
I worked at the little food concession (the white building on the left in the first few frames) outside "Jaws" the summer of 1990. The Jaws ride always seemed to be breaking down. In fact, the whole park seemed perpetually broken. Nothing to do but eat. Hard to believe they ever recovered.
Yeah. I was at the opening as well. They had lay offs and many had hours cut to 32 hours a week. It was bad. They really turned it around but it didn't happen overnight.
BTW, thanks for the "driving to work at Universal" video. Never imagined that I would ever re-live the summer of 1990 "in color" again. A little surreal. Two things I remember about driving in: one, feeling sorry for all the people who lived across the street who suddenly had to deal with the lights and noise of an amusement park. Two, the feeling delight everytime a nearby lightning strike caused many of the cars' alarm systems to go off in the giant employee parking lot.
Thanks for posting this. God I miss the park in the 90's. Now it seems that the classic Hollywood Spark it had in the 90's got lost after many of the Original's were replaced by new attractions that are meaningless such as Shrek 4D and Fear Factor as examples.
A much better example is the stupid Simpsons replacing the awesome Back to the Future ride. I've never heard of a theme park replacing one of its best rides with a horrible one but this place managed to do it. These days those parking lots which the old Hard Rock Cafe at the end of the video overlooked are the much better direction to look at.
While the Back to the Future ride was good it was showing it's age. Theme parks do this all the time. Disney does as well. The Simpsons Ride is good and they really have cleaned up the outside. I worked at Universal for years and every agrees it was time to drop Back to the Future.

I had no idea that there was a Hard Rock Cafe back in 1990. I thought it was built when Universal launched City Walk.
