This was directly relevent to a design job I'm doing right now and it resolved my problem in just 3 mins. I've been using Inkscape for a while, but after watching just a couple of your videos, I realize I can probably work so much better and faster after I watch some more. Thanks for being really helpful and succinct for those of us with ADD.

I'm using Inkscape on the Mac, and when I try to use the alt/option key to kern the text, it uses it as option instead so it tries to insert funny characters or does nothing at all. any advice?

try selecting text and using the Text - Convert to Text. It won't work if you're manipulating the text as an object.

Dang sir! That is useful. I had stayed away from kerning since I thought (incorrectly) it was much more laborious and much more limited. Very nice demo.
