  • TSU WA AY

  • 8 years when I was a high school student, our group represented region 10 in the NAMCYA competitions at CCP. Andrea Veneracion (national artist for music and founder of the Madz) gave the opening remark. What stuck to my mind were these words: "I tell you Philippine choirs are one of the best, if not the best in the world. I guess it comes from our spirit, we have a musical spirit."

Time and time again, we have proven this in international choir competitions!

  • @dtminifun you are right... Filipinos are musically Inclined,,..

  • This is my favorite batch of the UST Singers..

And i love listening to this song Again and again.. =>

  • nag flat po ung solo sa babae :) nabawe din naman

    :)

  • Why are they sitting down? Isn't that the signature position of the Philippine Madrigal Singers? Guess they knew PMS will never grace the stage of Llangollen. Afterall, Llangollen isn't a part of European Grand Prix.

  • @utlandagatan its the Europe who starts choral stand-singing and we dont say that its their signature and always belong to them. dont be such a hypocrite.. In India and Indonesia its cultural thing to sing and sit though but we dont make fuss on that if we even sleep and sing..LOL.. get over it, we're here just to enjoy good music..

  • @mariatinaza You can even enjoy other good music like the Philippine Madrigal Singers and other musical repertoire of the University of the Philippine Singing Ambassadors and the UST as well. Thank you.

  • I have to correct myself, it is not Independent Peoples but rather Indigenous Peoples.

  • when I was younger I sang in 5 choirs & loved it - these folks have found that same joy of choral expression and creativity - cool

  • lol

  • cool! nagpa-practice kame nito nagun.. hope magaya namin to.. LOL

  • There is nothing to compare with this one great tribal or ethnic songs for the Philippine Islands.

  • woooooow, that was way beyond incredible!

    What is the song about?

It says on the score that it's Igorot Planting and Mourning Song. What's Igorot and on what occasion do people plant it?

    Thank you.

  • @ciokas Igorot is one of the ethnic group in the country islands of the Philippines and there are so many to mention. Morning song is a song or chant about a lamentable piece of chant or tribal piece of that particular ethnic group.

  • filipino choirs has this distinct quality of voice, spirit, harmony, blending of voice, in addition the musicality of the early natives of the Philippines for the zest!

  • iba talaga ang mga tribal songs ng Pilipinas sobrang ganda at kakaiba

  • @bandilang it's ethnic.. not tribal..

  • @SabyOnWest09 theres no such significant difference between the two terms since the Philippine has several "ethnic tribes" to say the least.

  • @bandilang but these students are not even members of these ethnic tribes...Imagine what they have to go through just to learn the songs of the northern independent peoples? galing...

  • @kushisol Tama ka magaling talaga sila ksi may dedication to learn though mahirap talaga ang mga vocal routines category na nabanggit.

  • @SabyOnWest09 yeah...there are no tribes in the Philippines, only Independent Peoples...

  • bravissimi!

  • sinu yung babae na nagsolo? pwedeng NEW MARIAH! kaya audition ka na ning sa Dream Academy ng ABS CBN>

  • Galing talaga !! Kita ko si Marcia at Joven!! Idol!!!

  • nkkatawa hAHAHAHAHAHH tanginang mga pagmumuka yan

  • Fantastic...I am so very glad that the Filipinos are finally discovering their heritage and bringing indigenous music and culture to life. This sounds pretty much like an Igorot song to me. It was not always the case way back when I was still in the Philippines in the 70's. But seeing this it makes me proud to be a Filipino. Also, having seen the various choral groups interpreting this marvelous song, I would say hats off to the UST singers for a wonderful job.

  • ang galing!

    nkakakilabot!

lalo nung naiwan mg isa ung babae!

    gling gling!

  • is this the original version of chua ay?? sa lahat kasi na napakinggan kong chua ay..eto na ung pinakamaganda. swear!! ahm..this is one of my favorite piece. hehe. GODBLESS. =]

  • I believe they are all too shouting at some parts... It seems like they are becoming too impressive. I love them better on their other songs.

  • this is one of the best performances of the UST singers! timing is precise! nakakakilabot!

  • Energy!

  • ang gling :]

  • wow ! they are such a great choir !

    :D:D:D

  • Amazing I am proud to be Thomasian

    Bravo UST singers!

  • mali... dapat proud to be A thomasian.

  • Salamat magkano ang babayaran ko?

  • it's always amazing to listen to ethnic filipino music! and for this one, with the right number of singers it made it more defined but not forced. Undeniably the best batch!

  • ay sori nelo...bka ndi moh un mkinig ksi u dont even know what a sharp and flat note means.....at ung pok pok alimpako wg mong pgtawanan nanalo un internationally...kinumpara moh pa ung nanalo ng namcya..duuuh....

  • i just cant imagine how a person like you nelo would say those words to a choir like ust singers.....i am also a fan of madz but to compare madz with ust...i doubt it...una pareho silang mgaling...but when it comes to live performances mas mlinis po ang sa ust...may performances ang madz n minsan ang soprano 2 ay sablay.panoorin mo ang vrsion nila ng light of a million morning sa korea...at madi2nig mo na pag live mnsan ay my nasala na nota. i admit npkagling ng madz but they lack consistency.

  • correction

    *THEM

first comparing THEM to PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS, now in OCTAVA CHORAL SOCIETY...

    talking about BITTERNESS.....

    ^^

im not arguing. peace kuya/tito/tatay/lolo whoever you are...

  • where did this happen??? wow so proud to be filipino!!!

  • Wow...whew! Ganda nung gitnang part...contrast to the first set.

  • kya pla, CHUA AY mixed with NAANTO AY (medley)... kya pla dramatic ung ginta tapos.... ung rush ng blood ko bumilis nung patapos na... pang patay pla ung gitnang part... narelax ako sa tono... XD lol

  • *blood rush... typo sorry

  • they are superb in singing ethnic songs. almost perfect.

  • kakainis...ang galing-galing nyo!

  • The best interpretation of this arrangement so far! Good Job UST Singers!

  • the best version so far...

  • paiyi, you should have heard the philippine madrigal singers' interpretation of this piece. although maybe ust is one of the bests but quite far from pms. i just don't know if pms has posted their version of this piece. i have the original cassette tape i bouhgt from ccp back in the early 80's if im not mistaken, i still have it today.

  • they are both great but i prefer UST's VERSION... esp THEIR POKPOK ALIMPAKO's version... PArang no one can beat that...

    i like PHil MAdrigal too...

  • they are not the original of pokpok alimpako...its just a copycat from the choir that came from midanao; the OCTAVA CHORAL SOCIETY. this group won the first place during the NAMCYA '81 in CCP. If you listen to them (from youtube), UST's version is very funny. i'm not trying to create a heated argument here but i would like to ask you to listen also to the octava so you could compare it yourself. the same group who defeated ust during the same competition.

  • there is no point of comparing choral groups from other!,

Lets put it this way, those pieces, like Pokpok

Alimpako, Chua-Ay, and others, were created,

composed and arranged for us to be proud of

that indeed, we can make our own music!

Why not enjoy making music together!?? ^_^

  • excellent job ust!

you are the only group that can perfectly sing this song !

  • what is this song about???? whats the story behind it ?. . im in a smal choir in thailand and we try to sing acapella songs to the best of out ability and i think that this song proaly needs quite a lot of members but do yuo know anywhere i can get hold of this piece?

  • you can get this piece in the philippines and this is arrange by the conductor himself. this song speaks of Filipino oriental culture... this is a masterpiece...

  • as far as I know... Fabian Obispo is the arranger of this song.... unless the one conducting in this video is Fabian.

  • yes, this song is arranged by Fabian Obispo. Fidel Calalang has arranged the same song for the UST intercollegiate competition if im not mistaken 2 years ago (title: "scenes from the North)...

  • Yes it is . . .apprantly i am in Thailand . .(= = ) it's a bit hard to get the piece. . LOL

  • there are actually two songs in this piece: Chua-ay! which is a rice pounding song; and Na-anto Ay which is a funeral chant. You'll know it when the top soprano starts to wail and cry. The arrangement ends with the upbeat rice pounding song again. I suggest you get in touch with people at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (check if they have a website) and request a copyrighted piece shipped to you in Thailand at your expense. Would be great to listen to you perform Filipino music.

  • thank you for the niformation

  • Cool!
