For anyone who has actually read the book (its not a manga) this announcement is insulting... not only is the main character asian, but in his early 20s. Tom cruze is too old to be the star of this movie... warner brothers has also made many key changes that destroy the whole original story. The only thing I can hope is that Tom plays as one of the supporting characters. Maybe we will get lucky and the world will actually end in december. That way we won't haveto see this abomination...

Incredible. Warner Brothers hasn't even begun filming their Akira white-wash and now they are already prepping another Japanese comic book to be white washed. When will Asians, Latinos and Blacks ever get their equal opportunities in Hollywood??
@DaRunningMan It gets better. Warner Bros. is also doing two other movies set in or related to Japan, and both leads are white. One has to do with a white guy rising up the ranks of the Yakuza (NEVER heard of THAT movie line before!), and another having to do with a white guy who becomes a hitman or something or other in Japan. Geez, never heard that done before either! By comparison, Latinos and Blacks are better off than Asian-Americans, and they still have it bad overall.
@WangDugay As beauty's in the eye of the beholder, I've found it pointless to argue about beauty with most people because it quickly devolves into a pissing match. It does seem that people latch onto high profile people and seem to think they're more beautiful or hot than they actually are. It seems more like obsession rather than a true, honest look at how good the person looks. But, most people are immature when it comes to the beauty issue. It's like arguing which food is best.
I don't really like sci-fi, with the exception of the STAR WARS films. Mr. Cruise should do Richard III, as he was an excellent villain in Collateral (though I HATED the ending) and a really seductive vampire in Interview With The Vampire.
