I can't watch these video's of the old C64 games too much, the music gets me all emotional (and this a 36 year old man writing this) which doesn't do my adrenal function much good ;)
I got R-Type on Cassette Tape when i was about 13 or 14 years old... simply beautiful :)
Oh HOLY God! I used to play this game hours and hours back in my younger days ^^ I still LOVE this game and the Music is EPIC like nothing before :) This brings back so many great and loved memorys :)
For all the younger viewers. These songs were created at a time without: Internet, mobile phones or electronic dance music ... C64 / SID = Legendary !
c64 audio is mono by default and this is why I recorded these tunes in mono.
The stereo option in Sidplay artificially separates channels in a sid track and assigns these to left and right audio channels (much like Amiga does naturally). This option is most useful if you wish to record samples from sid tracks for your own songs.
I would imagine that one would require two separate sid chips to produce true stereo sounds on a c64.
@einokeino303 Keeping it mono is the better option anyway, we need to keep it authentic but it doesn't need stereo because it sounds incredible regardless ;)
What was truely amazing about the C64 port was that they pulled the music off using only two channels (except the for the title music) and the third channel was used for in-game sound FX. They had to speed up the tempo a bit to "fill" the music a bit, but I reckon Ramiro did a brilliant job and gave the C64's port a very unique feel to it, retaining the arcade feel and excitement.
What you said is absolutely true, In most c64 games you had to choose between music and fx. In this one you could have both at the same time and all this with only three channels. Pretty amazing indeed.
NICE!

the alien looks kinda cute. It looks like it's trying to say hello.

Rather awesome, specially considering its age and the limitations of the hardware employed.

I honestly think these sound better than the original arcade versions. They're so upbeat and full of energy, plus the melodies really stand out.
And that title screen music, oh my God.

These tunes sound even better played through Sidplay in high quality stereo sound.
A REAL SID panorama opens out then.
