  • Ah..thank you for posting...

  • I play this on an HTPC through a TV, with some ambient music running. Is still really good game.

  • I had this game on the BBC Micro, which was its original platform. I thought it was pretty creepy and weird when I was a small kid. Gameplay is addictive and simple though; I play it through BeebEm. It's a little slower than the 16-bit versions, but still quite playable, and the slower speed adds some tension to the gameplay.

  • dun dun dun dun dun

  • Brilliant, thanks for posting, brings back memories!

  • Oh my GOD I haven't seen this game in so long thank you so much for posting this! Talk about nostalgia!

  • I have the C64 and PC versions, and am amazed how good the C64 version is when I still play it. Yes, it plays slower - but trust me when that beam hits you it has the same effect!!!

  • I had this on the C64. It was much slower, but you got the idea. I would've loved to have played this version back in the day though. Someone needs to remake this for the DS or do a Live/Wii Ware/PSN download version of this. Imagine the same stark, minimalist look but stylised and of course, much much faster. Would be perfect.

  • @inphanta The best thing would be a Sentinel Returns port for 3DS. Trippy, creepy, and in full 3D.

  • GMod - 1982 :)

  • Geoff Crammond at his best!

  • I'm playing King of the Hill on the iPad (a remake of this game), and I have to say that although I do miss the stylized figures of the original, the iPad's is 1,000 times more user-friendly and responsive.

  • I had this on the BBC Micro. It was such a unique game, a bit scary but pretty addictive. It was written by Geoff Crammond of grand prix fame I believe.

  • Great game, some of the later levels are almost impossible lol

  • This game was fun but scared the crap out of me when I was a kid!

  • haha awesome. Memories.

  • does anybody have sentinel rom for amiga?please i will appreciate it with all my heart.

  • I absorbed this video and I was bould over it was a treet. It took me to another level.

Sentinel is an anagram of "Sent Neil"

  • @bar77FUL Yes, but the title of the game's American release -- "The Sentry" -- is an anagram of "Eh? Try nets."

  • Please upload the other 9999 levels

  • deforestation

  • Did anyone ever beat the game? I got to level 8240 on Amiga, but can't get any further. :(

  • @Idiotforstander Really? What's the level code for level 8240?

  • Classic stuff.

Btw: I think the best remake of this game, by far, is 'Zenith'. It's freeware, buggy and incomplete, but it still beats shit out of "The Sentinel Returns". It has these enormous landscapes, and georgeously crisp graphics.

  • This seems rather scarily fast (and high res and colourful) compared to the BBC B version I played.

  • This has got to be one of the greatest games ever. The game idea is so unprecedented, and so good =).

  • Great game...I used to play it on my old Amiga! Nothing quite like it before or since.

  • This was just the business when it came out. I had the spectrum version and used to play it forever. No other game ramped up the tension like this. Simply amazing and never to be repeated. Such a shame...

    Great upload.

  • I did reat back in the nineties (was it right written?)

that the game have 10.000 levels.

  • keep practicing your English.

  • Once you understand the basics, this game is as addictive as any other game, ever. Thanks Geoff Crammond for my countless hours playing this, and loving every minute of it.

  • This game was fucking ace, weird and spooky and 5 hours later shiiiiiiiiiit!!!

  • Those polygon games were kind of eerie.

  • yeah, surreal and freaky....but i love their atmosphere

  • what's this game i can't get it

  • I used to play this loads on my Spectrum.

A surprisingly engrossing game, a remake for one of the handheld games systems now would seem a good idea all round.

  • Had this one on the beeb. Fun, but slow.

  • This game was mindlbowing on every level when it came out. We were like "10,000 levels! what the fuck~?!?!" Fantastic memories!

  • Great to see this superb game again ,i used to spend hours on my amstrad playing this ,if things were not going to plan one of the keys could be used to send you into hyperspace then you would get absorbed anyhow mmmm

  • this game was(and maybe is) a shock for Spectrum users: 3d graphics, "almost" real time graphics, 9999 worlds, i think.

  • I remember playing this game on Atari ST when I was 7 or 8.

I also remember that I've never understood the purpose...So I was playing bubble bobble instead :p

  • LOL !

It seems that the controls of this ATARI-version are very difficult or i am wrong ?

I've got a vid of "Sentinel Returns" for the PC.

It is very easy to control.

I also found a freeware remake of the Sentinel calles "Sentry". This piece is very cool too.

This game is still addictive and one of the best ever invented...

  • Yes, it's harder than Sentinel Returns because here your movements are much slower.

The Amiga version is faster than the Atari ST version however, and it has a soundtrack by David Whittaker. IMO, the Amiga version is the best 16-bit version.

  • I finished it on the PC, C64, Amiga and Speccy.

    Best game ever!

  • I had this game on the Commodore 64. It was very slow but completely addictive. One of the greatest computer games ever. I can't get interested in most modern console games but I could play this for days.

  • I don`t know why, but I see ghost of the past in those old games, they are better than new, but people are blind with stunning graphics that are popular now.

  • God I LOVE that game. I discovered it in 1998, while reading a Sentinel Returns preview. I got hooked.

Some months later, I tried Sentinel Returnes on the PSX and my jaw dropped. It had the same playability of the original, but it was faster, more detailed, it was AWESOME!

In 2000, I finally got a hold of Sentinel Returns for PC... and I still have it installed!

  • Watch out so the Sentinel doesn't see you! =)

Thanks for the demonstration! I booted this game quite recently, but never understood how to play. This game has got great reviews and a kind of remake was made in the 90s i think.
