Merry Christmas Zuma. When you get a chance, listen to The Blues Brothers live version of "Soul Man', and tell me what you think. Maybe sometime next year you can post it for us beginners.
@zumazmusic seriously dude, I came across this vid like 6 months ago, and just saw DD for the first time last night....you have really opened me and the wife's ears as to what JT was doing, we knew he was cool and I loved Roger and the sound, but bass is a tough one to distinguish....you have shown the light. I've played instruments for many years, never bass, but your tone, quality, and timing are absolutely F*ing supreme. Thanks again, and play that f*ing bass, zuma, play that f*ing bass
@aztec89100 - That's very kind of you to say so! You have made my weekend! By the way, what's the screen name all about? You guys like Aztec Camera? ;+) My birth name is Moctezuma. That's why I ask. Again, thanks for the amazing compliments!!!
@aztec89100 nah, we graduated San Diego State University back before they had electricity....('89 and '90) but thanks for the reply, you are very good on the bass (as you know ;) ) but your style and fluidity are really something to admire....and btw, for the first time ever seeing them, DD was incredible, it reaffirmed what I've known for almost 30 yrs, these guys are very good musicians....I grew so tired of trying to explain myself to those that merely thought me a fag for listening to them
@zumazmusic oh, and btw, nice note on the Aztec Camera....we weren't big fans, but admired from a distance....we always kinda found it funny that there was this photo place near State....Aztec Camera....wow, dude, talk about shaking the cobwebs from this long addled brain....too many drops, hits, and concerts, but we enjoyed it all while we were there....alas, good times....
Fun seeing you play these great early 80's baselines. Another band from this time, which greatly influenced Duran Duran were Japan. Every play any Mick Karn lines?
In particular, I always thought it was a small step from Japan's 1979 Quiet Life to Duran Duran's Careless Memories or Planet Earth.
holy crap that is MONEY, dude !! JT is the second greatest bass player ever ... Geddy Lee of course is THE KING ... sh!t, I gotsa buy me a friggin' bass asap and slay this money ... full marks, bro
Sounds great! One thing I actually recently noticed (like tonight actually while playing along with the Hammersmith 81 show!) and played wrong for practically 20 years, is the verse in this tune. JT actually only does the F# to G octave walk every other time. The second and fourth are just G octaves repeated. I hate commenting on peoples playing saying that something is wrong ... but I think you might appreciate it because you are always nailing the DD stuff!
@DoubleEntendreSongs Zumas' vids are as correct as you will ever find, there is just that odd section I mentioned that almost goes against the grain of the song and difficult for the ear to pick up because it breaks the expected pattern. Like I said, I didn't catch it until recently myself. No point in me making a video, it would be just like Zumas except played on an Oak SB 1000! Best thing you can do is watch Zuma then watch EVERY JT clip and watch JT's hands and see what positions he is in
@maxixe If you say so but if he is making mistakes I really would like to see the exact spots. I guess the 15 people that gave him thumbs down heard the mistakes as well.
I just wish you could teach us better but it is your choice. Maybe you can make a slow tutorial lesson....
@DoubleEntendreSongs - The mistakes don't matter as much as the FEEL of what you are playing. People respond to FEEL, most people don't have the ear to discern such technicalities as we are discussing here. If anyone gives this video a thumbs down it's because they are haters, plain and simple.
@maxixe - This is correct as this is pretty much what I do. Of course, I listen to the song over and over as well but I also will look at JT and see what he's doing as well. I didn't (and probably won't) make a proper lesson of this one because it is a BITCH to play let alone break down the many parts. Just go crazy and have fun with it!!!
@maxixe - I will check that out for sure! Thanks for the spot. Sometimes these Night Versions are way different but I will definitely check that out. No offense taken my friend!
I just started to laugh on the moment when the cat jumped on the table. If I remember right, it's the beginning of the dirtiest scenes in the video. :)
I can see an amazing advertising campaign for the British Whiskas cat food company with this..........one of the biggest TV commercials on TV at the moment is the Girls on Film ad.........could the bass player of this video contact me?
I've enjoyed your vids for quite a while. You deserve the large amount of views-awesome stuff. It's musicians like you that give JT/DD the credibility the early press didn't give them-it only took them decades to turn them around! Sometimes I get dismissed as a fangirl, but I wouldn't have stuck around if they weren't talented too. Anyway-THANKS
hi,i have a question, how long have you been playing? your so good! i just started playing bass, and i was wondering if u could tell me how long realistically would it take to learn to play this song?
your really great,i am just learning bass, these videos are awesome and so helpfull!! i was wondering is there anyway you could do bass from duran durans song skin divers?
thats a sweet bass. i want to learn. i know how to play drums guitar piano and my next goal is bass. only question i have is it looks like at 0:47-0:57 u dont put any pressure and the movement of ur hands and fingers looks really odd never seen it like that. but yea seeing u play bass is really sweet
hi, my name is tom... i have been playing for just under 2 years (im 14 now) i will be doing my first big performance in perth australia next week and i just want to thank you because u have inspired me to play bass. (seriously, and i am not just saying that) by the way your cat is realy cute
@socomfy hey im a bassist.... boy have i had fun over the years...... just being a bass player is a pussy magnet, i think the check dig the length of the neck & they think the bassist has great timing & low end rumble, get my drift ohhhh & its all in the fingering. ha ha ha ha :)
hey Zuma love the sessions that you put on here thanks a lot, ive noticed years & years ago that john taylor uses many octave climbs & ones that descend ( girls in film chorus in a view to a kill, the closing repeated chorus in notorious, is this a common style of bass playing ur thoughts, i havent really noticed it before.ive modelled my playing on jt he is great, cheers man :)
@neonjunglejumper - Octaves are definitely a signature of JT's style. I was surrounded by disco as a kid so they just sounded natural to me. I suppose it might have been the same for him. I grew up with an older brother and shared a room so my influences had an "older touch." To get technical, it's a great way of creating movement without becoming too busy in a harmonic sense. Think of Paul McCartney's moving bass lines and then make every other note an octave. That's one way to look at it.
That's an Aria Pro II isn't it? I tried one out in Japan like 10 years ago when I was still a massive Cliff Burton fan (still am, but one gets into other things beyond early Metallica) and admittedly was a bit disappointed... though yours sounds pretty damn good!
Nice Work Man..I see I'm not the only one who has Pets come up and check me out while I am playing!!! I dig your stuff Man, Subscription added, Thanks!!!
I always thought Duran Duran was commercial and pussy-ish in the 80s. But now I am gonna start learning bass with this song and hope to get as much pussy as DD got in the 80s.
I'm a big fan of JT's lines and also own an SB1000. I've been trying to get close to his sound. the closest setting I found was taking the 6 way switch all the way to the most treble setting and the same for the tone knob. it gets close, but it lacks a lot of "meat" / low end, which I end up having to compensate with boosting it on my amp. the sound I hear on your videos is closer to JT's than what I'm getting. wondering if you could tell me about your settings. thanks! keep it up.
@goldshuv - I set the bass just the way you do. For the meat, I would go with compression more than anything else. Other than that, don't fight it too much. The SB1000 is what it is. It won't ever sound "fat." Don't forget the tone in the fingers either!
Your performance was amazing (and so the quality of the video and sound)! Being a bass player myself, I'm truly impressed by your skills, it's just...perfect. XD
It makes me want to learn it too, this bass line has a great feel.
This is fantastic! I love that funky bass! I don't play, but I enjoy the heck out of watching you do it! Also impressed with how you had enough time to give your cat a little attention near the end.
I connect to ArThomp, after I saw some Duran bass song from you Zuma, I bought a bass, and began to learn play bass. I'm beginner, but I enjoy to play/learn. So, thanks man! Waiting for your next video!!
Really good video. Only bought a bass recently and John Taylor is a big influence for me, really amazing bass lines. My favourite is Save A Prayer :D Anyway, you definately nailed this!
Wow, huge duran fan here and alot of 80s. Ive heard alot of john taylor imitators and you blow em all away!!! Very impressed man. This is coming from a drummer too, great job! If youre ever in the orange country area, let me know. Bass players like you are a rarity around here these days. Have a good one.
I've watch this video so many times to get JT's style down. Badass impressive Z! I show this to Duran unbelievers all the time. Respect the Double D, yo!
this is the best version imop to play...its so much fun...especially on my john taylor aria pro II sb 1000 bass:) these bass's have a 6 way toggle switch and that is where that wonderful sound comes from..i spent 1000$ trying to buy parts to emulate that sound and now that ive actually got the bass...im 37 in may and i grew up on all this stuff and loved it also..i live in lakewood ohio and NOBODY is into this stuff sadly..zuma is AWESOME!
would like add my congratulations, tough tune well nailed. too often the bass is seen as backing, not so, a good bassist can make an ok band great. my respects sir.
wow! was just scrolling thru fave old vids and came across yours by accident. I ended up watching the whole thing. You really nailed it! Fascinating to watch, too- you really make it look effortless. I guess I never thought about how melodic the bass was in a lot of D2 songs!
i have a bass guitar and am still a novice but i have a question...how do you play and not get a buzzing sound from the frets? I have a problem with this, whenever i play anything i know fairly fast it buzzes when i play, help? :(
after watching you play i cry whenever i look at my bass; all i can think is "i'm not worthy of holding such an instrument." Lol time to practice for another two years
@zumazmusic even the cat like duran duran. by the way, can you try playing the bass line for vertigo or so misled by duran duran? i think you'd be great at it.
Ok, I don't know what makes you more cool...the kickass bass playing or the VF-31 shirt!
Seriously, you rock! I've played drums for >20years along to Roger Taylor tracks, and have recently taken up the bass. This is good stuff to learn from!
i am 40 and a bass/keyboards and guitar player..also a singer songwriter....but you gotta hand it to the so called pretty boys duran duran...their innovative synth sound combined with a natural born bassist in John Taylor...shows how they had hits..not good looks...serious musical players...ok the good looks didnt hurt! And to the bassist showing this lesson..i salute you man!
This is great. But it would have been slightly better if you'd got a babe in a swimsuit to jump in and out of a bucket of water in the background. Also - pew-pew-pew camera shutter noises!
fantastic...wish I could play like this

I've watch this video so many times to get JT's style down. Badass impressive Z! I show this to Duran unbelievers all the time. Respect the Double D, yo!

That bass is an Aria Pro II SB1000. Has the best sound that you could ask for from a bass, and the look is just so sexy!

this is the best version imop to play...its so much fun...especially on my john taylor aria pro II sb 1000 bass:) these bass's have a 6 way toggle switch and that is where that wonderful sound comes from..i spent 1000$ trying to buy parts to emulate that sound and now that ive actually got the bass...im 37 in may and i grew up on all this stuff and loved it also..i live in lakewood ohio and NOBODY is into this stuff sadly..zuma is AWESOME!

wow! was just scrolling thru fave old vids and came across yours by accident.

jukedalon2 2 years ago
after watching you play i cry whenever i look at my bass; all i can think is "i'm not worthy of holding such an instrument." Lol time to practice for another two years

@zumazmusic even the cat like duran duran. by the way, can you try playing the bass line for vertigo or so misled by duran duran? i think you'd be great at it.

martijnkruik 2 years ago
Ok, I don't know what makes you more cool...the kickass bass playing or the VF-31 shirt!
Seriously, you rock! I've played drums for >20years along to Roger Taylor tracks, and have recently taken up the bass. This is good stuff to learn from!

This song has so many movements how did you figure out all the intricate parts?! argh! I give up. lol
centralscrutinizer66 2 years ago
i am 40 and a bass/keyboards and guitar player..also a singer songwriter....but you gotta hand it to the so called pretty boys duran duran...their innovative synth sound combined with a natural born bassist in John Taylor...shows how they had hits..not good looks...serious musical players...ok the good looks didnt hurt! And to the bassist showing this lesson..i salute you man!

This is great. But it would have been slightly better if you'd got a babe in a swimsuit to jump in and out of a bucket of water in the background. Also - pew-pew-pew camera shutter noises!
