  • fantastic...wish I could play like this

  • Merry Christmas Zuma. When you get a chance, listen to The Blues Brothers live version of "Soul Man', and tell me what you think. Maybe sometime next year you can post it for us beginners.

  • I wish I could take lessons from you!

  • Impressive!!!! WOW!!!!

  • Definitely the best bass performance of this song I've ever heard. Nice work!

  • うまいです!!

    かっこいいなぁ~

  • geezer...great talent...I wish I could.

  • your bass and cat are pretty good!!

  • what amp you use

  • ARREBENTOU!!!!!!!!!!!! MUITO BOMMMM......

  • Awesome stuff. Really takes me back to attempting to play this back in the 80s.

And it wouldn't be a Girls On Film video without gratuitous pussy shots... :)

  • Thank you all for the great comments. I really appreciate the good vibes!!!

  • @zumazmusic seriously dude, I came across this vid like 6 months ago, and just saw DD for the first time last night....you have really opened me and the wife's ears as to what JT was doing, we knew he was cool and I loved Roger and the sound, but bass is a tough one to distinguish....you have shown the light. I've played instruments for many years, never bass, but your tone, quality, and timing are absolutely F*ing supreme. Thanks again, and play that f*ing bass, zuma, play that f*ing bass

  • @aztec89100 - That's very kind of you to say so! You have made my weekend! By the way, what's the screen name all about? You guys like Aztec Camera? ;+) My birth name is Moctezuma. That's why I ask. Again, thanks for the amazing compliments!!!

  • @aztec89100 nah, we graduated San Diego State University back before they had electricity....('89 and '90) but thanks for the reply, you are very good on the bass (as you know ;) ) but your style and fluidity are really something to admire....and btw, for the first time ever seeing them, DD was incredible, it reaffirmed what I've known for almost 30 yrs, these guys are very good musicians....I grew so tired of trying to explain myself to those that merely thought me a fag for listening to them

  • @zumazmusic oh, and btw, nice note on the Aztec Camera....we weren't big fans, but admired from a distance....we always kinda found it funny that there was this photo place near State....Aztec Camera....wow, dude, talk about shaking the cobwebs from this long addled brain....too many drops, hits, and concerts, but we enjoyed it all while we were there....alas, good times....

  • I LOVE showing your vids to my mates who think DD are a girly synth band who can't play instruments...They watch your stuff, and STFU. Cheers.

  • NICE SERECT!PLY IS MORE GUTT!

  • Awesome!! Makes me wish I still had my bass so bad!!!

  • Great music, you zumazmusic are a great bassman and great teacher.

  • Bassist are cat lovers....

  • ...And the cat´s name is ` Tiger Taylor´. I love these bass classes!

  • u are a beast!!!

  • Very Cool!! and the cat made it that much better.

  • That rocked!

  • Funn Stuff Maaaan.

  • This was posted on Geddy Lee's birthday!

  • Very nice cat!

  • what do you use to record your vidoe and audio.?

  • Fun seeing you play these great early 80's baselines. Another band from this time, which greatly influenced Duran Duran were Japan. Every play any Mick Karn lines?

In particular, I always thought it was a small step from Japan's 1979 Quiet Life to Duran Duran's Careless Memories or Planet Earth.

  • If John Taylor were uglier he'd get more respect as a bassist..

  • Love the appearance by the cat! Smooth playing, nice tone. Well done.

  • Wow! you are really good! If I wasn't watching the video I would swear thats JT playing. Duran and 80s forever man!

  • I don't play bass, but I could watch this guy play all day

  • Amazing skill. I loved it. Beautiful cat. Thank you for sharing.

  • ARRRRRRIIIIAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

  • I always knew good musicians attract the pussy-cat!

  • Great stuff. Love the cat too :D

  • you are damn good!

  • Damn nice playin!! Beautiful cat btw :-) She liked it too lol

  • holy crap that is MONEY, dude !! JT is the second greatest bass player ever ... Geddy Lee of course is THE KING ... sh!t, I gotsa buy me a friggin' bass asap and slay this money ... full marks, bro

  • KITTY

  • @NerdForMIT - KITTY's name is Sugar! :+)

  • @zumazmusic shes cute

  • all way thought JT was just a 'pretty boy' but these basslines are top

  • Nicely done!!

  • FRICKIN AWESOME!!!!!!!!!

  • omg your cat kicks ass

  • Sounds great! One thing I actually recently noticed (like tonight actually while playing along with the Hammersmith 81 show!) and played wrong for practically 20 years, is the verse in this tune. JT actually only does the F# to G octave walk every other time. The second and fourth are just G octaves repeated. I hate commenting on peoples playing saying that something is wrong ... but I think you might appreciate it because you are always nailing the DD stuff!

  • @maxixe Can you please please please make a video to show us the correct way to play this song?

  • @DoubleEntendreSongs Zumas' vids are as correct as you will ever find, there is just that odd section I mentioned that almost goes against the grain of the song and difficult for the ear to pick up because it breaks the expected pattern. Like I said, I didn't catch it until recently myself. No point in me making a video, it would be just like Zumas except played on an Oak SB 1000! Best thing you can do is watch Zuma then watch EVERY JT clip and watch JT's hands and see what positions he is in

  • @maxixe If you say so but if he is making mistakes I really would like to see the exact spots. I guess the 15 people that gave him thumbs down heard the mistakes as well.

I just wish you could teach us better but it is your choice. Maybe you can make a slow tutorial lesson....

  • @DoubleEntendreSongs - The mistakes don't matter as much as the FEEL of what you are playing. People respond to FEEL, most people don't have the ear to discern such technicalities as we are discussing here. If anyone gives this video a thumbs down it's because they are haters, plain and simple.

  • @maxixe - This is correct as this is pretty much what I do. Of course, I listen to the song over and over as well but I also will look at JT and see what he's doing as well. I didn't (and probably won't) make a proper lesson of this one because it is a BITCH to play let alone break down the many parts. Just go crazy and have fun with it!!!

  • @maxixe - I will check that out for sure! Thanks for the spot. Sometimes these Night Versions are way different but I will definitely check that out. No offense taken my friend!

  • @zumazmusic

Are you Duran Duran fan? :)

  • I just started to laugh on the moment when the cat jumped on the table. If I remember right, it's the beginning of the dirtiest scenes in the video. :)

  • Thanks - loved it, this was really helpful. Love your cat as well - my own cat likes my bass playing too, for some reason.

  • I can see an amazing advertising campaign for the British Whiskas cat food company with this..........one of the biggest TV commercials on TV at the moment is the Girls on Film ad.........could the bass player of this video contact me?

  • you are so cool!!!fab bass playing! yr cat looks like 1 of my cats.lol

  • i love cats *-* so cute ^-^

  • I like it!!!!!!! very good!!!! greetings from Mèxico!

  • Cool stuff. Wish I had bass-playing skills like that! Sadly, all I have are the awesome prettyboy looks.... :(

  • Dude. That was impressive. Really.

  • kitty ftw!! awesome :)

  • This is fantastic, hope to be this good one day! :) great tone too

  • cat likes your hand :D

  • I've enjoyed your vids for quite a while. You deserve the large amount of views-awesome stuff. It's musicians like you that give JT/DD the credibility the early press didn't give them-it only took them decades to turn them around! Sometimes I get dismissed as a fangirl, but I wouldn't have stuck around if they weren't talented too. Anyway-THANKS

  • You're one damn muther plucker. Great playing!

  • nice !!!!! great line bass !!!!!!!!!

  • Great!!! Fantastic performance!!! And the cat, cute!!! Thx....

  • Nice job thanks for putting that together. Funny I have a cat that looks like that. And a wood finish bass (padauk).

  • At 2:49 I thought smoke was coming out of your fingers!!!! =)

    Well done!!

  • GREAT PLAYING

  • hi,i have a question, how long have you been playing? your so good! i just started playing bass, and i was wondering if u could tell me how long realistically would it take to learn to play this song?

  • your really great,i am just learning bass, these videos are awesome and so helpfull!! i was wondering is there anyway you could do bass from duran durans song skin divers?

  • Very informative. Thanks!

  • haha im only two minutes in but what a version!! nice

  • thats a sweet bass. i want to learn. i know how to play drums guitar piano and my next goal is bass. only question i have is it looks like at 0:47-0:57 u dont put any pressure and the movement of ur hands and fingers looks really odd never seen it like that. but yea seeing u play bass is really sweet

  • amazing.

  • hi, my name is tom... i have been playing for just under 2 years (im 14 now) i will be doing my first big performance in perth australia next week and i just want to thank you because u have inspired me to play bass. (seriously, and i am not just saying that) by the way your cat is realy cute

  • Excellent work! Loved it! Praises to your kitteh too for cheering you on :)

  • Today I bought a similar bass! after some fixes with it sounds great!

  • I knew that bass line was a pussy magnet!

Great vid man, I always wanted to learn that riff.... Well played!!

  • @socomfy hey im a bassist.... boy have i had fun over the years...... just being a bass player is a pussy magnet, i think the check dig the length of the neck & they think the bassist has great timing & low end rumble, get my drift ohhhh & its all in the fingering. ha ha ha ha :)

  • @LuchoMazzeo - That's just the magic tone of the Aria SB1000!

  • excellent work mate! very pleasing to the ears.

  • hey Zuma love the sessions that you put on here thanks a lot, ive noticed years & years ago that john taylor uses many octave climbs & ones that descend ( girls in film chorus in a view to a kill, the closing repeated chorus in notorious, is this a common style of bass playing ur thoughts, i havent really noticed it before.ive modelled my playing on jt he is great, cheers man :)

  • @neonjunglejumper - Octaves are definitely a signature of JT's style. I was surrounded by disco as a kid so they just sounded natural to me. I suppose it might have been the same for him. I grew up with an older brother and shared a room so my influences had an "older touch." To get technical, it's a great way of creating movement without becoming too busy in a harmonic sense. Think of Paul McCartney's moving bass lines and then make every other note an octave. That's one way to look at it.

  • That's an Aria Pro II isn't it? I tried one out in Japan like 10 years ago when I was still a massive Cliff Burton fan (still am, but one gets into other things beyond early Metallica) and admittedly was a bit disappointed... though yours sounds pretty damn good!

  • The only guy who can play John Taylor's lines right. Badass.

  • Nice Work Man..I see I'm not the only one who has Pets come up and check me out while I am playing!!! I dig your stuff Man, Subscription added, Thanks!!!

  • Five plus! So jösses good!

  • 4:10

    lol

  • I always thought Duran Duran was commercial and pussy-ish in the 80s. But now I am gonna start learning bass with this song and hope to get as much pussy as DD got in the 80s.

  • @BOULDERDP - I am proud I helped turned that pussy around for you! I hope you get as much of it as you can. Cheers!

  • hey zuma.

I'm a big fan of JT's lines and also own an SB1000. I've been trying to get close to his sound. the closest setting I found was taking the 6 way switch all the way to the most treble setting and the same for the tone knob. it gets close, but it lacks a lot of "meat" / low end, which I end up having to compensate with boosting it on my amp. the sound I hear on your videos is closer to JT's than what I'm getting. wondering if you could tell me about your settings. thanks! keep it up.

  • @goldshuv - I set the bass just the way you do. For the meat, I would go with compression more than anything else. Other than that, don't fight it too much. The SB1000 is what it is. It won't ever sound "fat." Don't forget the tone in the fingers either!

  • GREAT cover! And yes, more cute cat please.

  • The cat likes it too!

  • Your performance was amazing (and so the quality of the video and sound)! Being a bass player myself, I'm truly impressed by your skills, it's just...perfect. XD

It makes me want to learn it too, this bass line has a great feel.

    Anyway, congrats! ^^

  • This is fantastic! I love that funky bass! I don't play, but I enjoy the heck out of watching you do it! Also impressed with how you had enough time to give your cat a little attention near the end.

  • @algonacchick - The cat is the one who had the incredible timing. I just took advantage of the situation. ;+)

  • Looks Painfull Sounds Cool.Glad I play Guitar.

  • lo maximo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is really good :)

  • I connect to ArThomp, after I saw some Duran bass song from you Zuma, I bought a bass, and began to learn play bass. I'm beginner, but I enjoy to play/learn. So, thanks man! Waiting for your next video!!

  • @cirrusbp - I am glad to hear that you bought a bass! This is why I do these videos, for cats like you. I hope it brings you great memories.

  • @zumazmusic pettin' the cat was a nice touch. i just watched duran duran "classic albums" on Rio, & now i'm on a huge DD kick.

  • @cirrusbp Hi, I'm looking to buy a bass myself. What kind of bass did you buy? Thanks

  • I love that you've not just done justice to this tune, but you've also captured John's funk essense, and that's not easy to do. Excellent work!

  • love john taylors bass playing..worlds most underated player..great job mate cracked the duran duran sound

  • Really good video. Only bought a bass recently and John Taylor is a big influence for me, really amazing bass lines. My favourite is Save A Prayer :D Anyway, you definately nailed this!

  • @ArThomp - It makes my day to hear that you were inspired to play! Keep it fun and don't let anybody bring you down!

  • Wow, huge duran fan here and alot of 80s. Ive heard alot of john taylor imitators and you blow em all away!!! Very impressed man. This is coming from a drummer too, great job! If youre ever in the orange country area, let me know. Bass players like you are a rarity around here these days. Have a good one.

  • would like add my congratulations, tough tune well nailed. too often the bass is seen as backing, not so, a good bassist can make an ok band great. my respects sir.

  • Now Iam a fan of yu.

  • wow! was just scrolling thru fave old vids and came across yours by accident. I ended up watching the whole thing. You really nailed it! Fascinating to watch, too- you really make it look effortless. I guess I never thought about how melodic the bass was in a lot of D2 songs!

  • Nice pussy cat too!!!!!!!

  • Incredible job. I've never seen a song more nailed than this on You Tube!!!!!!!

  • loved it. Wish you would do somemore duran duran songs

  • i have a bass guitar and am still a novice but i have a question...how do you play and not get a buzzing sound from the frets? I have a problem with this, whenever i play anything i know fairly fast it buzzes when i play, help? :(

  • after watching you play i cry whenever i look at my bass; all i can think is "i'm not worthy of holding such an instrument." Lol time to practice for another two years

  • You are Awesome dude!

  • I must add, I think your cat is beautiful too!

  • great bassline. Dont get how your fingers are so relaxed playing it. When i play it it takes alot of concentration n effort from me!

  • Can we see more of the Cat !!!!!

  • If I could control her actions I would but you know how cats are!

  • @zumazmusic even the cat like duran duran. by the way, can you try playing the bass line for vertigo or so misled by duran duran? i think you'd be great at it.

  • nice job you prick!

  • dude, you are like TOO good, loved the bass and the sound.

  • Damn, I think you hoarded the talent out of my gene pool! Great job!!

  • Great!

  • I do love the cat

  • awesome cool. the baseline rocks out of your head

  • Ok, I don't know what makes you more cool...the kickass bass playing or the VF-31 shirt!

Seriously, you rock! I've played drums for >20years along to Roger Taylor tracks, and have recently taken up the bass. This is good stuff to learn from!

  • you guys gotta play together!

  • Thanks! I love jets and I love Felix the Cat so I bought this patch from a vet at the local comic book show and stuck it on my army shirt. :+)

  • Awesome, id love to jam to it on my drums, totaly perfect

  • I love the night version, and your bass cover is nothing more than perfect.

  • nice bass, bass playing and cute cat

  • You are too sick dude. *Bowdown*

  • Very good....

  • I am thoroughly impressed with your performance! It was absolutely amazing! Thank you very much!!!!

  • dude, your awesome!!thanks for posting-i`ve been playing this wrong for many years

  • Very good ! I am big Duran fan and it sounds great ! I've got the same bass as well......

  • You've got this lines spot and with exactly the same bass that was used on the original...

  • This song has so many movements how did you figure out all the intricate parts?! argh! I give up. lol

  • i am 40 and a bass/keyboards and guitar player..also a singer songwriter....but you gotta hand it to the so called pretty boys duran duran...their innovative synth sound combined with a natural born bassist in John Taylor...shows how they had hits..not good looks...serious musical players...ok the good looks didnt hurt! And to the bassist showing this lesson..i salute you man!

  • This is great. But it would have been slightly better if you'd got a babe in a swimsuit to jump in and out of a bucket of water in the background. Also - pew-pew-pew camera shutter noises!
