The Anaconda and Brabo are generally interchanged among grapplers as a whole for the same set of head and arm chokes, the difference is in whether the figure four is on the side of the arm or the neck, arm - anaconda, neck - darce/brabo.
Though I've heard high level Jits guys call both by either name, also I've seen people call the N/S Choke an Anaconda. These terms are just names
Though calling that an anaconda is idiotic, it's a peruvian necktie all the way. Great sub.
no way Mann is knocking out Curran, the only way he wins is by decision, Curran has more tools in my opinion to catch Mann, get the submission or TKO, even a decision. Depending on how that fight ends, I see these guys becoming Top 10 easily
*Anaconda (is how you spell it), is also known as the d'arce.. you take it from a front headlock position... peruvian necktie is what we see in this video.
@xxxxj4 yeah, the video starts out, it appears he works for an anaconda, aka d'arce, he loses it, sets up then takes the Peruvian necktie in beautiful leaping fashion. Its very clear. Beautiful jiu jitsu.
@TheCyndicate back in the days of yore when jiu jitsu was unrecognized, d'arce got mayhem in a modified anaconda (the modification,I believe, was he didn't roll), mayhem didn't know what else to call it so he called it the darce ... At least this is the story I remember being told.. A wise bjj black belt that I had the tremendous honor of learning from said that names change school to school and the important thing is that you know what people are talking about...
@zakquack I have been practicing GJJ for a very long time. I am 32. The real name for a Darce choke is the "Brabo" choke. This choke is done from Half-Guard Sprawl position. The Anaconda is done from North►South, Facedown position. In the Anaconda choke, You have to roll under after the grip & then wall walk on the mat to apply pressure. COMPLETELY different things. And let me just tell you man, for someone to pull off a Peruvian Necktie submission at an elite, pro level is absurdly amazing.
@TheCyndicate I have drilled both brabo and anaconda and during both someone mentioned that it's also called the darce... because darce isn't even how you say d'arce... thank you very much for the insight, big brother. no choke is actually called the darce. maybe d'arce can be credited with a sweep or something? to be clear tho, the video shows a beautiful peruvian necktie submission.
@zakquack The BRABO is also called a Darce. And it IS said "Darce". The inflection is just a French based accent. But if you were going to go to a class to learn it, you need to call it a Brabo.
@TheCyndicate just watched a few darce videos.. i think i understand it a lot better. submissions101 seems to call any choke with an anaconda style grip a darce... mayhem gave me the best help. and a darce is like an inverted anaconda style grip... nothing like the peruvian necktie lol
@zakquack Yeah, your starting to get it. A Darce is just a RNC/Arm Triangle from the sprawl Half Guard position. As far as I know, and I could be wrong here, the 1st time I saw the Anaconda Choke, was from Nogueira at Pride Total Elimination 2004. I don't remember who he fought, but everyone flipped out over the submission & they asked him afterward what it was & he named it that, right on the spot. It was my understanding that him & his team invented the choke. But I could be wrong on that.
@davidf35 Yeah man, it's really hard to pull of properly, but this choke is a really good example of why I love Jiu-Jitsu, Vale Tudo & MMA. The art and physics behind it are just awesome to see. When you see a really talented person, win with one of these chokes on the ELITE, PRO level, it is just AWESOME to witness!
@xxxxj4 And an LOL to you to sir for that is a Peruvian Necktie, not an anaconda choke. If you need assitance on differentiating between the two I will gladly assist you.

Very nice! I'm a fan of submissions and it sucks that they seem to be coming less and less in the higher levels of MMA.

@coachrollieworkouts mostly cause the fighters know defenses for them, but I do love a good grappiling battle.

@TheCyndicate Like watching Chan Sung Jung whip out a twister against Leonard Garcia?
mrjfray 1 month ago
@mrjfray Yeah, but Garcia was not very skilled on the ground, so it was a bit easier to catch him in it.
I would say that Ryo Chonan's Flying Scissor Heel-Hook submission on Anderson Silva in Pride, is a better example. ㋛
