Why do people have to make degrading remarks about her body? Ecaterina Szabo was amongst the finest in womens' gymnastics during her time. She was the real AA champion @ the 84 games. It's a shame that people who don't follow gymnastics immediately think of Mary Lou when it comes up, but nobody remembers Szabo who was also coached by the Karolyis and took home 4 Olympic gold medals. I wouldn't have known much about her myself if I hadn't studied gymnastics... and of course because of youtube.
@MelleAndKev No, she was not the "real" AA champion, nor was she "robbed" (the '84 Games are *over*, Mary Lou won fair and square) --but Szabo was an amazing athlete and beautiful gymnast.
@NYCBlonde It could have gone either way, I would have personally been in favor of Szabo, but when I made the comment I wasn't really thinking about how the team scores still played a factor in your AA placing. With that said I would have liked to see Silivas win the AA in 88 but Shushonova was still a great AA gymnast... and I wish they kept the UBs close enough to bounce though... now it's like men's high bar.
She's not fat, it's called womanhood (which is what she became by age 20 in this video)... what an amazing athlete she was... truly one of the all time classic greats. She is a testament to hard work and dedication during an era when the sport was dominated by 14 year old girls.
i agree i think she is an amazing gymnast who cares about her body and yes she was robbed of that gold in 84
