Individual tracks are easy to find on music blogs or p2p systems, and albums, well, it only costs a little bit more to have a whole proper CD for your collection with artwork and everything else.

Most people have problems against "stealing" music, so what iTunes did was probably the best solution. However, people are still pirating music and other stuff out there, it's not going to stop it, but whatever makes this rich "artists" happy. The one thing iTunes is really great for: Independent Musicians.

If nobody buys the music, record companies wouldn't fund the artists to tour (live shows are the highest earner for the vast majority of recording artists, far more than advertising contracts or endorsments) they would also not sell any clothes or bring in any advertisements if the main thing that shows an artist's success (sales) implies that nobody knows them or likes them.
