• The typical american desert, with far ranges & inselbergs. (please cover your camera microphone with soft sponge, against the wind)

  • Hello Andrei. Thank you for the comment and suggestion.

Unfortunately, I have tried covering my camera's microphone with a "sponge" to no avail. It bothers me too.

  • Fascinating

  • Yes but you did a good job with the sub titles. The wind is part of the desert.

  • Great stuff Bruce!

  • Muchas gracias para su complimento!

But this video is pretty...umm...lame? (I need better video equipment. Too much wind-damaged soundtrack!)

  • Yep, you are right Bruce, that is Red Mtn. From my vantage point of Opal Mtn (many miles to the Southeast and a higher elevation) Red Mtn has a very different look. Her beautiful volcanic peak really stands out from there. Thanks for the great video!

  • Hmmmm... I may be wrong (probably am wrong) but the picture you show as Red Mountain looks more like Almond? Mtn.

  • Hello Mojave888. No, I have Red Mountain identified correctly. I own all of the topographic maps of this area, and I take pains to locate the correct name for the features that I visit. But thank you for the comment and thank you for loving the desert. (Which I guess you do, judging by your username!)

  • The sound of the wind really rings a bell!

  • I have an interesting story about EAFB and camping out there, well actually I got quite a few interesting stories.. Did you camp out there alone? Alone really means alone when you're out there. I took my son out to Opal Mtn last April, his first Desert trip ever.

  • Did you camp ON Edwards AFB? Or near it? I'd love to hear your story. And yes, I have camped by myself in the Mojave. This video is a partial record of one such adventure. I've never had any problems camping alone. The wind evident in this video was particularly persistent that night. It also blew throughout the daytime on this trip. I saw Kelvin-Helmholz billow clouds (a special cloud-type that doesn't occur frequently) on this trip. I have more memory for my camera now.

  • Hello Mojave888. Five months ago you wrote

"I have an interesting story about EAFB and camping out there, well actually I got quite a few interesting stories."

Just a follow up on your comment: Will you share any stories now?

  • Hello again. Still waiting to read your stories about caming near Edwards AFB. Anything?

  • Not a UFO nut either but can't deny I saw strange things out there (then again Edwards AFB is out there so..) The Desert is an amazing place, so perfect. Apple Valley/Hesperia oh crap...I remember when those places were cool, now just another LA suburb. You been to the East Mojave? Some wonderful places out there.

  • In my 12.5 years living in So Cal I have been to just about all parts of the Mojave. Of course, some places/parts I have explored in greater detail than other places/parts. One of my favorite things to do is to study the topo maps of a given area and pick out some interesting things - a spring, a canyon, some petroglyphs - and try to get there. I've been to some amazing places using this method. Most people go to places that have been written up in guide books, or somewhere a friend has been.

  • About Edwards AFB: In the Harper Valley where I saw that UFO "thing", you are also on the margin of Fort Irwin (to the NE) and south of China Lake Naval Weapons Center. The Harper Valley, I suppose, is a nexus of a sort for military lands. It wouldn't surprise me at all if what I saw was some kind of military op. I'd still like to ask some questions about it at the solar facility though.

And yeah, Hesperia/Apple valley, I agree: Another LA suburb. Ugh. Thank the developers and politicians.

  • You saw wierd lights....? I guess I'm not crazy then lol. I'm stuck in Northern California now so I only get out there once a year but in the good old days (1970's 1980's) I was there almost every weekend, or at Joshua Tree..the East Mojave..Anza Borrego....climbing San Gorgonio, Rabbit Peak..gosh, getting old sucks!

  • And where have you seen wierd lights? I am NOT a UFO nut. In fact, I ususally frown on such silliness. But I did see something out there that was EXTREMELY wierd. A vehicle hovering above the ground, and every so often it would shine what seemed to be a mega-watt spotlight down on the ground along the north perimeter of the solar facility. Kind of spooked me. I didn't have any memory left in my camera, otherwise I would have tried to get some video.

  • I guess getting old sucks, but you saw the desert when it was much less developed than it is now. Have you seen the Apple Valley/Hesperia/Victorville area recently? Awful. I'm a transplant. Even in the 12.5 yrs I've lived in So Cal, I've noticed a marked difference in the pop. density in those areas. I get out to the Mojave when I can as well.

  • "I guess getting old sucks,"

    Better than the alternative...

  • Have you been to the Black Mountain/Opal Mountain area?

  • No, I haven't been to the Black Mtn/Opal Mtn area; although I do know where they are located. I have been to Rainbow Basin. Last year I drove south of Cuddeback Lake inbetween Fremont Peak and the Gravel Hills past the Harper Valley solar facility to Hwy 58. Saw some wierd thing with lights in the sky along the fence of the facility. Yikes!Black Mt is to the e. of Harper Lake. The winter/early spring/late fall are the only times that I enjoy the Mojave. Too damn hot any other time of year.

  • Red Mountain is a beautiful sight to the NE of my usual camping spot when I'm in that area.

  • Hello! Thank you for the comment. I've been going to this area for several years. A good road to take that brings you along the north side of Red Mountain is RM 1444. About 1.5 miles north of the junction of 395 and the road to Trona, turn right onto RM 1444. At the turnoff there is a BLM display and a road marker that says RM 1444. That is an alternative way to get down to Cuddeback Lake. I have a Jeep, but I did the whole thing in 2WD.

  • Oh, Mojave, I should say that, BLM route RM 1444 is 1.5 miles north of the junction of 395and the road to Trona, ON the road to Trona.

  • i jus went there today

  • You went where Richard?

  • Mojave desert, Red Mt.

  • Really? You were at Red Mountain? I didn't think that anyone even knew where Red Mountain is located! Red Mountain is the name of an actual mountain but it is also the name of a small little community strung out along Highway 395. So, were you at the actual mountain or were you visting the little community?

  • Well we usually camp on the dry lake bed, because we have dirtbikes and a camper trailer.

  • Oh, OK. I see. Yeah I see a lot of people riding bikes on the dry lake. By the way that dry lake near Red Mountain is called Cuddeback Lake, if you didn't know already. In 2005, when we had all of the rains, there was water on the lake; several inches deep at least. Happy riding!

  • Yeah i knew it was called that. Haha you know i was there when all the rains happened i think it was during thanksgiving weekend.

  • I love that area of the country.

  • Thanks for the comment, Cad. Any suggestions for cutting dwon the wind sound on the audio?

Come on out here, man. I'll give you a tour of the Mojave. It's best mid-fall/winter/to mid-spring. Too hot the rest of the year.

  • When I was a broadcast tech in the AF, we once had a hurricane hit the Japanese base I was stationed at. We had the same problem, the wind ruined all our audio.

Speculatively, I would suggest getting a directional shotgun mic out of the wind (in a car, maybe?), and then pointing it at you as you speak. That might help a bit.

  • Gracias, man! I'll look into getting some better equipment. Thanks for the suggestion.

  • No prob. I'm not sure that will work, but I think it might work better.

  • ...a separate mic with a wind screen? video is excellent. waiting to hear a coyote myself...had one cross the road right in front of my car one late night (2:30am) driving home from work...totally cool!

  • Thank you for the comment and the equipment suggestion. I am looking into it. Unfortunately there were no coyotes the night I was camping. Do you live in a desert? Oh wait! Aren't you the person I met commenting on a Genesis video? You live on the east coast right?

  • Yep, 'tis me. Actually, I'm in the midwest. Bummer there were no coyotes for you...maybe next time! A friend at work was studying for an earth science class & when i saw her textbook i couldn't help myself & said "i LOVE plate tectonics!!" (she shook her head & rolled her eyes.) It was my fav part of Oceanography class. What kind of musician are you?

  • That's very intrstng. So, you saw a coyote in the midwest? In what state do you live? I teach physical geography (sometimes), which includes plate tectonics, at several community colleges in southern Calif. As far as music, I play guitar, bass, keyboard instrmnts, mandolin, etc. I've played blues, rock, jazz, country, reggae, punk, funk, and bluegrass.

  • what?! no drums?! ; ) myself, i play guitar now, well, i try to. i'm a hack. but i LOVE it. i played bass in a funk/blues/r&b band "getta down...get fuuuunky!"

michigan, by the way; land that is still rising after being weighed down by glaciers...1" a year? i think i remember that correctly...

  • Well stratgrl, I play a bit of drums; that is, if I'm inspired and/or the music doesn't require a beat that is too God-wally complicated. 2. I also played bass in a funk band in New Orleans 18 yrs ago now. I wuz the only white boy! *LoL* 3. The process of land rising "after being weighed down by glaciers" is referred to as isostatic rebound. 4. I didn't realize that there were coyotes in Michigan. I've only ever encountered them - at varying distances - out west here.

  • @stratgrl76: Sorry: memory function mistake! I played guitar in the New Orleans funk band, not bass. (Like it matters! *LoL*!)

  • ah, New Orleans...wish I could go back down there & help out.

  • Visually a treat, but the audio... Maybe you should take another trip out there after investing in some anti-wind equipment...I look forward to better and better offerings from as you grow in the medium...I would have loved to hear a howling coyote...oooooooooooo

  • Very well done. Should of had a kite.Or better sound equipment.Unbelievable, you are a true profesional.Very,Very, well done.God Bless You,Tour Goomba PIGGY!
