I think that jason was a better live/hype-man, he was INTO the show and added a lot of raw, badass energy to the concerts. cliff on the other hand, was less of a hype-man, but definitely made up for it in musicianship and creativity. both are(were) great musicians, but its almost comparing apples to oranges. EVERY member of metallica has changed and shaped metallica into the merciless fucking beast that it is today.

A little off topic here but I hate it when people compare the old Metallica with the new Metallica. First, James's voice is different because as people get older their voices change and think about how many shows they've played, your voice would be shot to shit as well. Second, their lives have changed because they get older and like most people you mature especially when you have a family. So yes Metallica has changed but lets be grateful that they're still around.

I concur, Metallica has been my favorite from the time I discovered their music in the mid 80's, I was 14 or 15 I believe at the time. I never said anything negative about Cliff. I just said Jason was a better backing vocalist.
Jeez...it's like you guys think Cliff is the superlative of everything, and should anyone point out someone as better in one musical aspect, it's automatically considered as blasphemy or what not. Newsted is just a better vocalist in my opinion, and he is just as good as Cliff when it comes to musicianship.

@RazorAceYU i think there is a definite trade-off. I think that jason was a better live/hype-man, he was INTO the show and added a lot of raw, badass energy to the concerts. cliff on the other hand, was less of a hype-man, but definitely made up for it in musicianship and creativity. both are(were) great musicians, but its almost comparing apples to oranges. EVERY member of metallica has changed and shaped metallica into the merciless fucking beast that it is today.

A little off topic here but I hate it when people compare the old Metallica with the new Metallica. First, James's voice is different because as people get older their voices change and think about how many shows they've played, your voice would be shot to shit as well. Second, their lives have changed because they get older and like most people you mature especially when you have a family. So yes Metallica has changed but lets be grateful that they're still around.

@eetfuk8200 Some people just can't help to compare though since Metallica was so good back then, I think it has something to do with the lack of energy at Metallica shows now, they kinda seem to be just walking around playing songs...although this is just my opinion so, ignore it if you want.

I concur, Metallica has been my favorite from the time I discovered their music in the mid 80's, I was 14 or 15 I believe at the time. And as we all get older and life grinds us down bit by bit, we don't always shoot as straight as we once did and often need to readjust our sights in order to hit the target. So we adjust and move on, so did they. I remember the days when I would have considered someones insult on Metallica as "Fightin Words", art of me still does... lol
