From what I've read, they didn't "perfect" anything. They decided to make this entry more in the image of the Wonder Boy games. Don't get me wrong, I love this game. I just recognize how much different it is from a traditional Adventure Island title.

This game was like a dream come true.
They finally perfected Adventure Island with this one and then the series had to die...
Best soundtrack out of the entire series I might add...all the music was superb.
