I remember watching this fight as a kid with my old man and 4 of his friends. It was funny watching Hearns' jehri curl fly in slow motion once Hagler landed a punch on him.
I love the way they finish the first absolutely bashing the shit out of each other and when the bell goes they're still both like 'you want some fucking more?'
How did you guys score round 1, I thought it was very close but I think Hagler at the end took it, but some people thought Hearns won. Does anyone know what the official scorecards were after 2 rounds.
@JJbubbs23 I scored the first round even. Both men landed tons of shots and a lot of power shots as well. Both guys were stunned also. It was a tough round to score because despite all the shots thrown and landed neither guy dominated the round.

When Hearns hits Hagler with that first tremendous right hand you can see him pause and take a small step back as if he is expecting Hagler to go down. One wonder what went through his mind when he saw Hagler was still standing having taken his best shot.
Hagler showed his damn awesome resistance because if there was a hard hitter in that era it was Tommy Hearns, I don't think there was another hard hitter like Tommy at that time. But strong isn't enough in boxing as u can see, Hagler's stamina and tenacity supressed strength. I wanted Tommy to win this fight :(
@rickeywomack IDK? man... Mayweather wouldnt be able to hurt them but that's not his style he out boxes people.. Honestly there both kind of wild i think they would have a hard time actually landing any good punches.. People dont really talk abouts Flyod's precession to much either.. I think a better matchfor him would of been Sugar Ray who i think would fuck Floyd up but it would of been a good 1//
they are a fundamental element of the rules of boxing, and anyone that knows anything about the sport -and this excludes envious losers with grudges to bear- understands the implications of weight classes upon considerations regarding match-ups.
@jason60152 How can you say Antonio Tarver is better than Tommy Hearns? Tarver is a overrated bum. He wouldn't last 2 minutes with Hearns faggot. like I said before Hearns has more KO's than Tarver's wins. You don't know shit about boxing. Hearns became the first boxer in history to win world titles in four divisions. What has Tarver accomplish? You are a fucking joke.
Hearns is the hardest middleweight puncher of all time ( look up hearns vs duran) Hearns was known to knock out heavyweights so he probably did break his hand since Hagler has the hardest chin in boxing (Thats a fact look it up in the 10 hardest chins of all time)
I think he broke it on the third right hook he hit Hags. Tommy hit him flush in the side of the face. Hags stopped for a second and got nailed twice more. How in the world Hags just shook them off, is just unreal.
All that before the 30th second of the first round .
@raiderz1111 This kind of fight bro, is something you dont learn in the gym. Being a fighter is more that just knowing how to fight, its that hunger that warriors feel when they refuse to get defeated (spartans, gladiators, ww2 soviet union etc.) its a psychology that makes the fighter put himself and his self pity out the window in order to win the fight. These two fighters were obviously not fighting for the money, who the hell would go through that for money.
@MrRick1254 i think hardest middleweight puncher was Julian Jackson, p4p nobody had more power than he did. I think he was a light-middleweight however
Yea the gloves were small back then, but that really has little to do with the brutality of this fight. These two men would of killed each other even if the gloves were 16 oz. Its the fight hunger in these two men that separates them from the rest. You can buy gloves, training, trainers etc. You cant buy heart, no matter how much money you got. Thats the difference.
Yea, they were good. Did you see Gatti VS Ward? What about Alexis Arguello VS Aron Pryor? All the Ali VS Frazier fights were good. I also loved Holyfield VS Tyson 1. It wasn't an exceptionally actiona packed fight, but I love Evander, and I was like the only person I know, who KNEW that Evander would win. I won $20k off the fight!! Barrera VS Princess Nas Hamhead was OK. Not a lot of action, but enjoyable. Especially since Barrera not only schooled, but basically retired the little elf.
@gjc82071 im not really into heavyweight fights theyre too slow paced for my liking and yes i saw gatti vs ward and arguello vs pryor truly epic fights!.
IMHO this is hardly the The Greatest Fight Ever, there were just 2 1/2 rounds, there were several other better fights like Hearns - Leonard, Leonard - Duran 1, Taylor - Chavez and more recently Morales - Paquiao 1, all of them better fights than this, I still think that Hagler - Hearns it was a great fight but nothing special compared the the other ones that I mentioned, just as a note Hearns was a very limited fighter he just trow punches to the head he never trow a real serious body pounch.
@recibos1001 It was a great fight not just because of the fight itself, which was a war with neither guy conserving energy for latter rounds, but because you had two legends facing each other. There was a lot of hype, it was the middleweight division (definitely a glamor division) and the guys both came to knock each other out, and early. So it had a lot of critical elements of gratness in it. But I agree there have been other boxing matches that exceeded this one for quality.
To add to what was already a classic fight, the commentating was STELLAR, capturing all the excitment of the fight. I believe that Bernstein and Michaels in the broadcast that night.
Take a look at Paquiao(champion in 7 different categories),Martinez,Mayweather,Donaire,Bute,Alvarez, Maidana,Ortiz,Mathysse,Klitschko bros(yes, they kick everyone s ass) Barrera, Morales,Khan, Cotto, Margarito,Mosley,etc...every one of them had intense wars, I guess we tend to mystify the past...I m 41 and actually saw this Hagler Hearns fight...and enjoy present boxing(and intermediate) just the same
Best fight ever. I was 17 when I saw this fight, back in those day's they had the best fighters. Ray Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, Duran. Those were the day's when boxing was great.
@Rick102667 boxing is still great man, its just harder to find amongst all the crap. Look up angulo vs kirkland, i thought that was pretty great, and it wasnt even for a belt! And sergio martinez is making the middleweights exciting again, he just needs a few more superstars to battle multiple times like the guys u mentioned in their days
What happened to fighters like this? Nowadays everyone is such a pussy with no chin and balls. I'm 19 and wish I truly grew up in the 60s, 70s and 80s just because of these incredible fights.
Jst oonce I'd like to see Floyd Mayweather face a boxer like Hagler, Hearns, Sugar Ray or Duran. Floyd is good, yes. But he's never faced any fighter that had the speed, skill, chin, heart, etc, of any of those great fighters. I think any of the 4 fighters I mentioned, had the ability to make for a very bad night for Floyd. Floyd's cutsie shit wouldn't work on a Hagler, who'd walk through Floyd's shots, and collapse his ribcage. Hearns, pick him apart from outside, Ray, just as fast/slick.
@gjc82071 hagler would just eat mayweathers punches and like get waken by it because he'd probably get bored fighing him, his chin is just way too good !!
@AndrewQuiroz24 Hearns broke his hand in rnd 1.Kept fighting and has NEVER used it as an excuse.David Haye broke his pinkie toe weeks b4 facing Klitschko and bitched and whined for days and weeks. But not to worry, now with internet and everything u can access any figt u want in seconds:-) I think the only era that was "u had to be there" was Tysons reign 86-90 Ppl that wasn`t even born then hate on Tyson, but no one gives the fact that back then no one knew how it would end a thought.
@AndrewQuiroz24 Riso-Antillon was like this (smaller scale obv) just a few weeks ago, wolak-Rodriguez alos a few eeks ago. The question should be, why are fights like this not televised more.
@AndrewQuiroz24 ....it was a great time for boxing that is for sure....middleweights like Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Hagler....it was exciting....heavyweights before that Frazier, Foreman, Ali....now every fight seems to end in some bs controversy...SEE Floyd Mayweather vs Ortiz...complete JOKES...but they will do a rematch for twice the money in the previous fight! LOL...they all are shit now a days.
These two guys REALLY didnt like each other, and that made it great fight. Nothing ive seen since even compare's, and the first round must go down in history as the most action packed, edge of the seat dust up ever!!. There were no mickey mouse belts, or champs in this era, just true champions, and marvin with his switching, never say die attitude and toughness, was in my humble view the best.
It's a great fight, but about midway through the first, Hagler has the momentum. Rd. 2 Hagler is clearly dominant, and in the 3rd, well, Hearns is done. Awesome fight, yes, but a lot more one-sided than many here would admit... or remember.
Two great boxers rise turn their bout into an elemental struggle for survival. Others have done the same in their sports: Bjorn, Tiger, Pele, Lance. We are fortunate to have lived in their time.
I'm as a big a fan of Marvelous Marvin as anyone, but you always have to remember that Hearns fought virtually the entire fight with a broken right hand. His first few right hands backed Marvin up, but after the injury, Marvin was able to walk right through them. Tommy had skill and heart. As good a fight as you'll ever see.
Unbelievable fight till this day, Hagler's formula in this fight was clearly heart, mental strength, conditioning and a good chin. Legendary fight, legendary fighters.
Hearns broke his hand in the first round, yet how many excuses did he ever make for losing? Not one! Today's fighters need to look at the efforts and dignity which these hearns and Hagler displayed that night and hang there heads in shame (especially Haye and Fraudley Harrison)
I remember seeing this live--what an exciting fight! Two great fighters going head to head, letting it all out, superb effort from both. I was a fan of both fighters so I didn't know who to root for. What a thrill.
When the ref called time during the fight in the 3rd round because of The cut to Hagler,he asked Hagler "Can you see"...The Marvelous ones response... "I'm not missing him am I".CLASS.
@theog67 Hearns, without doubt. He was one of the hardest hitters, p4p, of all time. He was known for the murderous right hand. However, Hagler was known for being one of the toughest.
Thomas fought the wrong fight! He had reach, height and speed advantage, why did he try to slug with a slugger? Another case of trying to please the crowd and not win the fight using smarts. Great fight to watch, silly way to fight on Hearns part.
I tell people all the time: the greatest BOXING match was Ali-Frazier III. One of the greatest FIGHTS(if not the greatest) was THIS one, not to mention THE greatest round in boxing history, in ANY weight class, bar NONE!!!!
Hagler was definitely bitter in 1982, when Hearns backed out of their scheduled May fight with a sprained finger and Leonard builds up the Baltimore announcement in September
only to say he was retiring, Hagler was very disappointed. I am sure part of it was the 2 big paydays but also to show the world he could beat both fighters. They both made him wait for several more years. I must say I admire Duran for fighting Hagler in 1983 when Hearns and Leonard were avoiding him.
Hagler WAS the best at that time except for maybe Mike Tyson who just Destoyed is oppents. I think Hagler was ripped off in the Leonard fight but he did compromise this fight by trying to prove that he was a better boxer. At one point you can hear his poeple telling him, It's time to bust him up.. He should've beat the piss out of Leonard just as he did Hearns. Still a great fight tho.
@jessemy I think you're right. If Tommie Hearns couldn't stop him on the shots that he was able to land, what chance did Leonard stand of KOing Hagler? classic case of power vs chin. Hagler's power vs Leonards chin, Leonard's power vs Hagler's chin. Hagler clearly with the advantage both ways. If he had went in as a bully, who knows...
A lousy fight?? You're on drugs right? This 8 minute bout was one of the greatest fights of all time and it isn't just me that has said so. Marvin won this with body shots that took the legs out from Hearn and a granite chin that nullified Tommy knockout punch. If you think this was a lousy fight, you don't know jack shit about boxing.
@joeygonzo i know it was but its a childhood memory.. me and my dad watched it together and was rolling on the floor when he sprained his ankle and his post fight speech was hilarious as well, we are both dying to see it :( thanks anyway
Stop calling him "SRL." Society has really dumbed itself down. The younger generation has to shorten everything. He's not GSP, he already has a nickname so call him by it: Sugar Ray. Anyways... haha... this is one of my favorite fights of all time!!! His fight with Duran was epic too. Duran had some wars too!!! His fight with Ken Buchanan was epic, but the ending was controversial... damn referee.
This is generally regarded as the best round of boxing ever in the middleweight division yet it is disliked !??! I guess there is no pleasing some people.
I woulda retired to cuz the sport u have so much admiration for didnt have the same for you aspecially after you work so hard as a fighter, but haglar asked sugar ray for a rematch and ray said no lol he knew he was gone die if he got back in there with that man, haglar lost two fights his whole career, everytime he lost he went on like a tweele fight wining streak and none those fights lasted to the 3rd round all 1st n 2nd round knockouts in ray aint want no parts of dat lol i wouldnt either

joeygonzo 6 months ago
@joeygonzo oh shit, so the thumb is like another separate part of the glove?
Hillvillager17 6 months ago
@Hillvillager17
The tips of the gloves now are sown down so you can't grab with them or stick them out.

Hearns, pick him apart from outside, Ray, just as fast/slick.
gjc82071 3 months ago

@AndrewQuiroz24 And The old guys are shaking , and speaking like the Mayweathersfrom all these punches.
topdog90U 4 months ago
@AndrewQuiroz24 Ever watch Ward vs Gatti. This was a great, all action fight. But compared to that trilogy, this was mediocre.
MADMAC572 3 months ago
@MADMAC572 Yea that was a great trilogy. But probably the last of those kind of fighters ):

Pure "Mano-a-mano". Boxing as it was meant to be.

Love this fight! I'm watching it for a first time and I am speechless! My favorite fight is Mike Zambidis vs Chahid :))
marintoss 6 months ago
These two guys REALLY didnt like each other, and that made it great fight. Nothing ive seen since even compare's, and the first round must go down in history as the most action packed, edge of the seat dust up ever!!. There were no mickey mouse belts, or champs in this era, just true champions, and marvin with his switching, never say die attitude and toughness, was in my humble view the best.
tett2000 6 months ago
my favorite fighter tommy "the hitman" hearns ,but bloody ell,how hard is marvin hagler.think his chin is made of granite!!
garrick2910 6 months ago
I believe Manny is telling the truth...Tommy never had his legs...
inlaymensterms 6 months ago
It's a great fight, but about midway through the first, Hagler has the momentum. Rd. 2 Hagler is clearly dominant, and in the 3rd, well, Hearns is done. Awesome fight, yes, but a lot more one-sided than many here would admit... or remember.
WK2K 6 months ago
that was spectacular! id not seen this fight before. wow. fireworks.

Two great boxers rise turn their bout into an elemental struggle for survival. Others have done the same in their sports: Bjorn, Tiger, Pele, Lance. We are fortunate to have lived in their time.

Tombstone1959 6 months ago
I'm as a big a fan of Marvelous Marvin as anyone, but you always have to remember that Hearns fought virtually the entire fight with a broken right hand. His first few right hands backed Marvin up, but after the injury, Marvin was able to walk right through them. Tommy had skill and heart. As good a fight as you'll ever see.
uhmfar 6 months ago
@uhmfar You stole my comment, amen to it!

HandsomeBGoode 6 months ago
I remember seeing this live--what an exciting fight! Two great fighters going head to head, letting it all out, superb effort from both. I was a fan of both fighters so I didn't know who to root for. What a thrill.

who hits harder?
theog67 7 months ago

77777johnnybravo 8 months ago
@77777johnnybravo Duran would have taken on Mike Tyson if his manager would let him! He didn't know the word fear
liljoerox 8 months ago
Hagler WAS the best at that time except for maybe Mike Tyson who just Destoyed is oppents. I think Hagler was ripped off in the Leonard fight but he did compromise this fight by trying to prove that he was a better boxer. At one point you can hear his poeple telling him, It's time to bust him up.. He should've beat the piss out of Leonard just as he did Hearns. Still a great fight tho.
jessemy 8 months ago
@jessemy I think you're right. If Tommie Hearns couldn't stop him on the shots that he was able to land, what chance did Leonard stand of KOing Hagler? classic case of power vs chin. Hagler's power vs Leonards chin, Leonard's power vs Hagler's chin. Hagler clearly with the advantage both ways. If he had went in as a bully, who knows...
Jadervason 8 months ago
A lousy fight?? You're on drugs right? This 8 minute bout was one of the greatest fights of all time and it isn't just me that has said so. Marvin won this with body shots that took the legs out from Hearn and a granite chin that nullified Tommy knockout punch. If you think this was a lousy fight, you don't know jack shit about boxing.
YeahRightInc 9 months ago
do you have tommy vs uriah grant im dying to see that cant find it anywhere
jaycm 9 months ago
@jaycm
No.
It was a lousy fight.
Tommy looked shot. Uriah was getting on him then Tommy sprained his ankle.
This is when I wished I still have my old beta tapes of boxing.
I had Tommy vs Shields one time even.
joeygonzo 9 months ago
@joeygonzo i know it was but its a childhood memory.. me and my dad watched it together and was rolling on the floor when he sprained his ankle and his post fight speech was hilarious as well, we are both dying to see it :( thanks anyway
JohnCLocafella 9 months ago
@JohnCLocafella
I remember watching in on Prime Ticket then ( later became Fox Sports ).
Tommy making that post fight speech, " we're from Detroit and we don't go out this way " was kinda funny .
I don't have the tape either.

@BuffaloHead444 in your opinion and funnily enough in Leonard's too but most others seem to disagree and call them both sugar

That was great. "Haggler is done, Hearns is done." But both still fighting. Amazing.
Saki2407 9 months ago
"It's Hagler, full of blood!" Love that line!!
saunaking 9 months ago
Stop calling him "SRL." Society has really dumbed itself down. The younger generation has to shorten everything. He's not GSP, he already has a nickname so call him by it: Sugar Ray. Anyways... haha... this is one of my favorite fights of all time!!! His fight with Duran was epic too. Duran had some wars too!!! His fight with Ken Buchanan was epic, but the ending was controversial... damn referee.
