@NemesiXProductions It's a particular cooking method, we call it "blank" cooking: in this case it's used to cook the base first, since the stuffing needs much less cooking time. The role of beans is to keep the base flat.
A lot of the bacon these days is 'fast fry' (basically pre-cooked) bacon so you probably don't need to cook it before hand. You could replace the bacon with other meats - for the vegetarian option asparagus is really nice imho.
