  • Such poignant memories from when I was a child and my Dad was still alive. Thank you.

  • I saw this wonderful group in Swansea Empire when I was a young lad. Thanks for the memories.

  • I truly love this verson. I bought the Col EP way back when with the Three Bells,

Whirlwind, Ave Maria and The Lonesome Sailor sung in English. Nine voices

    and they did it well.

  • Many memories for me too! I have to listen with the French accent as that is how I heard it as a child....thank you for posting this, it has overwhelmed me with memories!

  • This too brings back memories for me, of my grandmother, the 78 player, my mother's memories of the holiday in Blackpool where they heard this performed by Les Compagnons. I am happy to find out others also have childhood memories of this song, some that chime (no pun intended) in with mine. Bell sounds have been an evocative part of my life. On the B side was "That Lucky Old Sun", I had forgotten that until just now.

  • We are all united in songs - melodies - our Finnish crew members used to sing "The Three Bells" in a polyglot mixture of languages, depending whether Edith's, the Browns or Les Compagnons version had been played that night!!

  • "Les Trois Cloches" is a Swiss song with French lyrics, written in 1948. Early versions of the tune, titled "While the Angelus was Ringing", were recorded by many the following year -- Frank Sinatra, Dick Haymes, Margaret Whiting & the Andrews Sisters to name a few. But it was this beautiful version by a choral group from Lyon, France who had the major hit with "The Three Bells". In 1959 it was redone successfully by Jim Ed Brown & his sisters, as well as the Fleetwoods. Thanks for posting.

  • Wonderful to hear the original again. Thank you.

  • In 1952 at the age of eight I saw this song performed live on the Ed Sullivan Show. I was captivated by it. Sullivan liked it so much he brought them back from France for about five years in a row to perform it. I'm so happy to have found it again!

  • To anyone looking for this song on CD: Amazon has a few CDs by this group which include this song. ♫♥♫

  • This is the original recording I heard more than 50 years ago. Brings back many fond memories of my youth. Happy that you posted this original recording, and not an immitation that came later. Thanks!!!

  • I remember listening to this as a 78rpm record, over and over, many years ago. It brings back such pleasant memories. I thought it was about 1950???

  • I heard this song from The Two Ronnies when they were musical Barbers..a very funny sketch

  • Dad used to play this when I was a child.wonderful memories thank you

  • I first saw/heard these fellows on Ed Sullivan in the 60's. Thought it was a wonderful song back then and still think so. With Piaf, what a wonderful combo.

  • I remember my Dad buying this 78, must have been the fifties. I managed to put it on my i pod from Limewire, complete with the hisses and scratches. Thanks for the memories.

  • How beautiful! This brought me to tears. My sister and I used to spin our parents' 78 over and over. I think we loved the sweet, simple story and the honest emotion as well as the wonderful harmony.

  • This takes me back to the 60s, it was good then, it is now. Thank you.

  • Wonderful stuff. Michelle Sandoz on lead vocal..... my grandfather

  • Thank you for responding. It's nice to make contact with a person with family contact. I not only grew up with this song but this very record. Your grandfather's voice is an integral part of my childhood.

  • My parents also had this song on a 78 record. I used to play it often because it sounded so good.

I don't know what happened to the record, but I found this song on a compilation album.

  • I also remember playing my parents' 78 of this. It cropped up in conversation today and they said it was by this group. 5 minutes later and we're listening to it on Youtube!

  • A great singing group! Thanks to whoever providecd this - the best version of one of their repertoire items, and a version I haven't yet found on CD. - John Austin, Australia

  • This was one of my Dads favorite records. I havn't heard it for 50 years! So many memories. Thank you.

  • I had the pleasure of seeing this group in Blackpool when this record was newly released. This brings back happy memories, thank you notyobs.

  • I'm glad that this little record has brought happiness to so many.

  • @laceup1967 I listened to this when I was five years old, in 1953. It was one of my favourite songs at that time and it is wonderful to find it here. We had the very same recording and it survived for many years before breaking, as they did then. Thank you so much for posting it and ensuring its continuing popularity. May you enjoy the rest of your life in peace and well-being.

  • merci ^^

  • Beleive it or not, I just heard a "live" recording of this on XM Radio this weekend. it was from the Ed Sullivan show in the very early 50's. They really dig up some good stuff on that channel.

  • you can find the English version recorded in London in 1950 (and even an Italian version by Les Compagnons ) on their long box "Nos Jeunes Années"CD n°4 Marianne Mélodie with 11 other songs in Rnglish from the same period

  • I like this version much better than the original French version (with or without Piaf) or the Piaf English version... So of course this is the only version I can't find on any download site, and sine there's a French version I sdon't like as well, I'm not sure what CD might have it. Somebody post if you find it somewhere. I want it on my Zune.

  • Awesome classic! And I love the record player spinning..

  • thanks for sharing this. Amazing!

  • Merci beaucoup!!!!!!! Thanks!

  • come and visit our blog and site"les marchands de bonheur"we are looking for fans all over the world to get people's memories from Canada, USA and countries where they gave concerts. I am the same age as this song but it's always a pleasure to listen to it

  • This group......from Canada....were very popular on the Ed Sullivan show in the 50's. Their version of this song has always been a sweet memory for me. My parents had this record and I think I wore it out. "The Lonesome Sailor" was another great song by them.

  • Lovely! You wouldn't happen to have a version of La Mer done by Liane and the Boheme Bar Trio, would you? I heard it once, but have no idea what LP or 78 it is on. thanks

  • Absolutely magnificent. My very first favourite record when I heard it on the radio as a young boy

  • Many thanks for this excellent piece of music. I have been trying, unsuccessfully for many years to find it. Thanks again.

  • great video, one of my favorite songs and now one of my favorite versions!

  • i know this as Jimmy brown

  • wow what a fluke. i love this song by this group. cant find this group or song anywhere thanks so much veracarole

  • Hihi , thanks to laceup1967 for giving us this on You tube. i'm french, and i find this very funny. Well, this is a part of our radio culture... 55 years ago, i can't denied. Please, if you ear that, try to find here one version with edith Piaf. Just to listen her voice. :)

  • Thank you for your comment. Yes, I know the voice of Piaf very well. It was part of my growing up. My father called her "The Little Bird" from which her stage name was derived. I also have many records of Gilbert Becaud. I will post some if you would like.

  • @laceup1967 May YOUR soul find its salvation for posting this breathtakingly beautiful song, even in English and sans Piaf

  • A great song :)

  • laceup1967, Thanks for the videos! Among Solomon Burke's 60s albums, I find Rock 'n' Soul (1964), I Wish I Knew (1968), King Solomon (1968) and Proud Mary (1969) relatively easy to find, but Solomon Burke (1962), The Rest of Solomon Burke (1965) and live footage of him before the 70s very difficult to track down. If you just happen to like him and just happen to have "Solomon Burke (1962)," "The Rest of Solomon Burke (1965)," or any 60s footage of him, would you mind posting a song or two?

  • I love it. This has been one of my longtime favorites as performed by "The Browns" in the USA. Fantastic.
