Excellent series, beautifully filmed and loaded with useful information. I truly appreciate that they are available at 720p. I love to see them full screen just to drink in the natural beauty.
Would you please do a video featuring the glorious Merced River between Vernal Fall and Nevada Fall? I really love that stretch of trail, especially the Silver Apron.
I want to congratulate you all on the great achievement that this video series has produced. This is some of the best work Ive seen anywhere on the net since its inception. Thank you for such a great experience!
Does anyone know what song is playing in the background at the endof the video? i really like it but its hard to tell what song it is because of the voice over.
Trucking in all this slurpee ice all the way from Frazil must cost a fortune! I'm sure the Frazillians appreciate the income, but can't we just build our own slurpee factory in Yosemite? Cut out the middle man, I say!!!
What an awesome phenomenon... I've been lucky enough to see some darn amazing things in nature, but not this one yet... This is worth the trip I'm sure! Looks like time to get some friends & family together, dress warm, get the cold weather camping gear together & go! Absolutely beautiful!
If you haven't visited the National & State Parks, you ought to... There are some amazing things to see & experience in the mountains, oceans & even the plains & deserts. You might even see the bears! :)
I loved this video. Thanks for posting it. I've been there during the summer...never even close during the winter though. My brother and his wife went there last August and took Voo-Coo's of pictures and videos. Great place to visit anytime.
This explication of frazil Ice is just an old BS cliche. 30 years out of date, ignorant of current physics, just wrong. I was a naturalist in Yosemite 15 years ago, when the physics of super-cooled liquids was just beginning to be understood...even then I was debunking this myth. If I had enough characters to spare, I could do some footnotes, or an essay. Not worth it. If anybody cares, see last week's NOVA (About the Air France Disaster last year...) That's frazil ice!
@1unclejim1 I was just in Yosemite and saw this phenomena for myself. You have stated that this video explanation is a myth and wrong, but could you please provide at least a basic explanation as to why? If the explanation is wrong, then just saying so won't convince anyone, you must also provide one or more reasons.
In the hush of winter, you can make camp here. The Valley's summer throngs are absent, its distracting noise nowhere to be heard. It's a magnificent place, a reprieve from hectic nonsense and petty preöccupations. By Yosemite's living water, surrounded by granite and within the depths of its woods, GUYS can breathe again and wander with their brothers and friends. They can learn to build lives together, construct a meaningful future. Prost Wandern! Prost Brüderschaft!
Excellent! One additional fun fact regarding frazil ice is that the process is the building blocks of the polar ice caps: wind-whipped water transformed to ice. Where else besides Yosemite can one witness this in action? Wonderful.
What was also amusing was that these western-US narrators did not seem to have the word “slush” in their vocabulary and had to resort to comparisons with snow cones and slurpys. In some parts of the East, slush season is practically its own separate season.
Funny. This is exactly the stuff I used to play with when a kid – when we’d defrost the freezer, we’d have a big container of defrost ice (which is formed the same way as this is --- humidity freezing) which would be fun to move around & push into piles (which would immediately turn white just like in the video).
Agreed. Summer is not my chosen time - families can take an exception for this one. Yosemite is an education not to be missed. Yosemite during Sept. -- the AM mornings show Yosemite Falls make the "Christmas Tree". The trails are open, snow fall is light and absolutely gorgeous foliage. It can be warm too, but there is MORE to SEE as they mention. I'd love to see this event. Bundle up and go on a clear night for Star Walks. No cars, virtually no light...outstanding!!
AMAZING... I live near Yosemite National Park and I have never been up in April to see this... I think I should at least once...this is a great video. Thank you.
This is absolutely amazing.......I used to go to Yosemite every summer as a kid and never heard of this. Had I known of this as an adult I would have loved to see this up close and personal. Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing.
Great video Steve! I remember the first time I read John Muir's description of the ice cone, I was amazed by it. To see it through your eyes is pretty cool. Love the time lapse of the creek too.
Thank you so much for sharing such incredible and amazing natural event. It is so interesting and breathtaking. Thanks.

cgrantski 1 year ago 2
@cgrantski This way different than "slush" it is much drier and not the product of Salting a road
dingoboy5150 1 year ago
@cgrantski That is because it extremely rarely snows here. It only snows in the mountains here.
