The melee looked better and play more dynamic than in Starcon2, but the story line lacked "wow" factor of the second game. Star Control 3 had the most complex story and brings every thing togather for 1&2, but the meaning of the story was lost in all the insignificant details, and insignificant races that you wish you could just threatened to nuke if they didn't play ball.
The lack luster missions/challenges and constant condensation form lesser races is what killed some of the fun for me.
@WUZLE Yeah, in fact the ideas were so good that Bioware chose to rip off the story and setting almost verbatim. I've been replaying SC2 for the first time in years (though I missed SC3 first time round) and was starting to get the feeling that it was a little too similar to Mass Effect, but this clenches it. ME's story is just a SC redux.
Good ideas? Hardly. It turns the captain into a sort of Wesley f'in Crusher, mary-sue-ily succeeding to solve mysteries that far more advanced alien superbrains couldn't figure out over billions of years.
Then adds a repugnant little moral about how humans are better then aliens, which is hilariously arrogant coming from human writers. (And kind of racist come to think about it.)
Me... I really LOATHE 'humans are special/superior' as a trope not only because I deem it disgustingly arrogant. (Look at human history, we're not THAT great. We kill eachother alot over everything and despoil the planet. Sure humanity has good traits to, but it's FAR from a superior intelligent species.)
And secondly it diminished alien races as mere quirky background to beat around for the oh-so-superior humans, rather then actual species with real characters.
@StarControl69 Hey, I would never sacrifice the council. No matter how stubborn fools they would be. But I was talking about the second one, you know, Mass Effect 2. I don't wanna spoil it for anyone, so I won't go into details here. But let's just say that thanks to its characters ME2 is one of my favourite pieces of art in long time, even as it could use more of those characters, and contains one of the shittiest plot devices to my knowledge.
@StarControl69 Just finished the second one, and it looks awfully that the story is going down the shitter.
Humans being the chosen ones of the galaxy is the one scifi clichee that I just can't stand. Technically it does not make any sense, and from storypoint it is disgusting.

Gotta hand it to the developers, this IS an interesting way to get around the Fermi Paradox.

Probably the best part of a very bad game. There are some good ideas here, they are just buried in the crap.

So thanks but no thanks on the SC3 plot.

Anyone who doesn't realise what that big thing in the background is, it's the key you send down to the planet to activate the C.U.D.

The voice actor for the human probably had to purge himself after reading all that bullcrap.

The Pre-cursor sounds un-impressed tbh.
I would expect more from an Ortog.

In story: Probably some sort of magic evolution ray.
In reality: Looks like some sort of farming tool to sort grain or something like that.

One time I asked my friend what the metal thing in the background was, and he jokingly said it was a "precursor launcher" XD!
