I thought it was funny that you were so careful to use a "Mahl Stick" around her eyes, and then you take the brush and start wadding grey so that it would run down the page.
I'm trying to develop my own painting skills and I'm absolutely enamored with your style, I was wondering if you water down your acrylics and use them like makeshift watercolors or if they ARE watercolors? Either way it's really inspiring and I'd love to try my hand at a similar style!
First of all I love your work! What kind of pencil do you use to layout your drawing on the canvas? Do you spray it with something to keep it from bleeding before you paint? What kind of paint do you use? I have such a hard time blending. Anyways, keep it up and I love your personallity. Keep true to yourself.
Michael, thanks for the video. How many coats of fixative do you spray, and how thick do you spray it on before you start painting over the drawing? Thx!!
i love your choice in music. anyway, i have an account on dA, and I usually love to use inks because they act alot like water colors but have a much brighter value. but, now that i am out of school I do not have access to ink, or art stores that sell the right ink i am looking for. as i watch your videos, i notice that you use a type of paint and water it down then layer it as you go. do you layer the acrylic? and what kind of paper are you using?
Question...are you using real people as models, photos, or are these from your beautiful imagination? I would like to try this using a photo of my daughter. Such intimacy, mood, soul and skill. My artwork will be a little braver for watching you work.
How do you take the acrylic off so easy with a rag. How much water is in the paint, not much it looked like when you had the sky blue over the eyes. Then you got it to come right off. Any tricks?
Your works are awesome! I'm a fine arts student here in the philippines and I'm starting to make you one of my art heroes! Good luck to your career and upcoming shows sir! :D:D
MIchael :D I love u. u seem like an awesome guy and im deeply inspired by u! Im new when it comes to painting and i was just wondering what paint you were using that was dripping like crazy... haha? So far ive only worked with acrylics and i dont know much about the other types of paint out there. Im guessing its oil but in the 1st video u used salt water and im wondering why? Please get back to me!
Thanks so much! :) The instrument is called a Mahl Stick. It helps a lot to steady your hand when you are working on an easel. I just use a curtain rod. Any long sturdy stick will do. Hope that helps.
far out from cool, you just seem to be, seem to me, like that this is all you are , that is all you do, that this is all ment to be, away into your heart, away into your soul, it all just seems to be, seems to me, a beauty and a joy.
You are true inspiration to novice and experienced artists everywhere. Honestly, your imagery is so intense and emotionally captivating. Please don't stop.
As a side note. As beautiful as the finished product is, personally I believe that the simplicity of the pure yellow at first was a great base for the intense facial expression. Maybe that's not at all what you were trying to go for, heh =^-^=.
wow. i am a painter too. i was curious like others. what kind of paint are you using when you are creating the dripping effects on your work? are you just mixing oil with paint thinner to create a fluid paint. or are you using that type of house paint some artists use?
FemmeFATE8, he can be using acrylic to create the dripping effects, you can use acrylic and oil in the same painting but use acrylic first as "base" or whatever 'cause u cant paint arylic over oil or mix them. otherwise there is special water mixable oil colour that can be thinned out with water. Im not sure what he's doing but it may be like that :P
just so i understand, you sketch the portrait first on a canvas than you paint over it. What do you use. Like what paint and other materials? Please clue me in!
emersonstem: if u sketch with pencil, charcoal or pastel u'll need to use fixative before u paint on it to prevent it to smudging after that u can use oil or acrylic, otherwise u can sketch in whatever paint u gonna use.
Multi Talented... you really have serious talent plus you shine at keeping my attention. So many sensations to experience at once. COOL ! Very COOL. Later, for the love of Music, Comedy, Art, Humankind, Luna
I really enjoyed watching the level of detail you put into this piece (all of your work). The eyes are very captivating and the mood of the piece resonates. With a face like that you really couldn't lose when it came to the cloak. I did like the yellow but as you said as artist we have to decide what best reflects what we want to portray.
Good choice on the change. While it did look great before the brightness of the yellow detracted from the face. The new look with the color change makes the face stand out more rather than putting the emphasis on the clothes.
The final colour scheme clearly reflects her emotional state. However, I have to say that at 6:14, including the blue before it's removed, you have her wrapped in potential. There is so much hope reflected in the contrast between the colour of the blanket and her eyes, and her facial expression. I really think it could have gone either way. Thanks for sharing your process.
I love your guide rod... I've gotta get me one of them! Blessings...E! Beautiful work, most of my beautiful work is put into the temperament of my puppies these days!
First off I love your work, its very nice. I have a couple questions. How many layers or glazes do you normally paint over your initial drawing? I'm really amazed. I liked it yellow...but wow, what you did really brought it more to life. The colors were so vibrant and you mimicked the tears. I really liked all the colors. Your editing is really good too...I liked towards the end it looked like you threw a red line onto the canvas. And you can see someone walking in the hallway when you aren't on camera. Probably you...Loved it all.
Wow Michael! She's amazing!!!! Loved the close up while you were working on one of her eyes! Brilliant!!! And I loved the painting even more once you started changing it...so much more dynamic and tied in so much better with the emotion of the portrait Outstanding job!!! 5 stars! Gonna add it to my faves! :)

How many hours did this take you? Also, did you wait for the paint to dry before adding the blue or doing the orange part?

I like that you chose the orange colors instead of yellow. Isn't orange complimentary with turcoise/blue?

It doesnt seem like too many, does that make your pencil lines visible? Would this technique work with water based oils, and if you keep layering with more glazes for rich colors would you still keep your detail? Anyway, you rule dude, mucho respecto.
