It IS a 6.5 TD, and it's NOT stock! Shift points have been altered, along with the removal and deprogramming of the emissions restrictions. And yes, for all you yanks that don't have a clue about diesels, the speedometer is in KM/h. I'm Canadian, it's a Canadian truck, get over it.
How reliable are these motors really? I want to buy one to learn more about diesels (exelent with gas powered engines). I was wondering if the 6.5 is any good, or should Iget a Cummins or Powerstroke instead? I would like to stay with the best trucks, but IDK bout that 6.5!
@Motorfordtoyota I mean these motors are by far the cheaper to maintain, own, and buy. sure they are dogs and you can't boost the shit outta them because of the already high compression but they are pretty dam reliable. Also they get some of the best MPGs out there for this size and type of motor. I learned most of my diesel info with this motor.
@steelraptor OK, cause I mean, I like the Powerstroke, but for a Newbe to the Diesel world, the underhood is extremely, well, odd. To confusing. I also like Cummins alot, BUT HATE RAMS!!!! Way to unreliable on Dodge's part, Not cummins'. I wasnt sure bout the 6.5 though, cause I have seen plenty of dead ones (Im assuming that they were abused) And not to mention, Chevys Rule!
@Motorfordtoyota I blew mine, well beat the living shit out of it, cracked a head, then ran is for 10k miles while it leaked coolant into the oil turning it into jello and starving the engine of lubrication for 50 miles before it locked up but didnt seize, still cranked but wouldn't start till it was cool. These motors are good, just stock exhaust creates way to many EGTs and a crossover kit for the heads keeps them from cracking. Otherwise they last a long time.
um why is your oil press not higher @ this speed under this acceleration? why is there no diesel only above your gasoline ups im sorry diesel gauge? why does your cluster go to 180 mph?
a 6.5 will pull with a 7.3 idi. and 1st gen cummins thats what it was desingned to compete against although the cummins was better. the 6.5 was ahead of its time with the first efi diesel in small trucks. injectors, exhaust and intake will get a 6.5 to start to compete with the big guns... a chip with injectors and exhaust and intake will make it actually seem like a 7.3 stroker
Chevy and Ford as long as it is an American built truck its built tough. They both have their strengths and downfalls, but man have em both and you got the best. I love my Ford and I love my Chevy. Shame they couldn't have children =p
@steelraptor idk, some foreign trucks are built pretty tough, i had a toyota hilux and i put a piston through the block, and managed to drive it 80km home with it still running...
I'm not much of a Ford guy but i know that both could use some help from the others in different categories. I almost built an S-10 with a Ford 302, but ended up building a K5 Bllazer instead.
Actually your all wrong the 6.5 and 6.2 are very much different engines and come in a variety of configurations and are designed by Detroit Diesel and built by GM in the AM general factory. they were never gassers. your thinking of the 5.7 diesel that is basically a gas 350 converted over compression on my 6.5T is 21.1:1 btw
here in Argentina we are making ford ranger with 4 line cilidners, 3000cm3 and 163hp with powerstroke intercooler turbo direct inyection common rail, with 350nm of torque @ 1800rpm. Its more efficient engine than chevy americans olds V8
you didnt have to comment of course everyone know that a chevy is better then ford and if you think ford is better your a retard so you didnt need to comment it was a waste of time
wrong. its a bored out version of the 6.2L diesel. the 6.2 was a brand new engine design on its own from detroitdiesel and GM. has no relation to a gasser except for the shape of the engine
About the only thing is holds in common with any Chevy gasser engine is the fact that it has 8 pistons in a V configuration tied together with a crankshaft.
Nice truck. KMH??? where is that from and i need help finding good info for repaireing and modding 6.5 turbo engines i have one with rod knocking and the another i just got from a 96 truck i am going to replace the bad one with please help
Four inch straight pipe from the turbo to the back. Cats have been cut out. K & N airfilter with a custom made airbox. All emmison controls removed and disabled in PCM. And of course a 50 hp program. That video is almost a year old. I need to put another one up as the truck is running even better now.
Great observation. However, when that video was taken my alternator was dying, thus causing the drop in voltage. I have since replaced it and the volts hold steady at 14 under all conditions.
oh im not so sure. id have to check that

Why are you in OD? Your truck accelerates faster by shifting.. 1-2-3-OD. TRY IT AND YOU'LL NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE.

the diesel engines has normally compression 20:1, that truck must have compression 25:1
agusamadeus 2 years ago
the 6.5 used around 20:1 compression ratio since its an IDI engine design
6030diesel 2 years ago
The 6.5L Holds 21:1 compression stock. Many chose to lower compression to 18:1 for a chance to get more performance out of them.
