Its all about the fighter though, not the style. I prefer Judo because I think its more fun, but to each his own. I've tried wrestling and it was pretty fun too. I just think the throws in judo look cooler.
Think you can help me out man? I wanted to get into wrestling but it seems all of the wrestling teams are in highschools and are only accepting students.
How does Judo stack up against wrestling? Is it similiar? Do you think I would enjoy Judo or should I go for another MA alltogether. I'm not flexible, I want to overpower my opponent and beat him with a good technique
Hey, yeah they are pretty similar. There are no leg grabs in judo anymore though. Its hard to find wrestling clubs outside of schools for sure. I would recommend judo. You will become much more flexible and learn to use your power with nice technique to be really good. I had the same problem, but my technique, flexibility, and speed are coming along quite well and i'm starting to throw some pretty good guys. The throws in judo are very effective in fights too.
Judo also has alot of submissions, so if you decide you want to switch to BJJ later on, you can make a good transition. I know some BJJ instructors like their students to have a year or so in judo to develop the balance and coordination. And judo has alot of big tournaments year round, so you can get good experience against good fighters. I recently drew the US -66kg champion in a tournament first round and got to see what high-level speed is like. Really good experience.
I love how the top comments are bragging about how much better wrestling is, but Judo won the match - don't get me wrong, Im not a weeaboo at all, I just prefer Judo, and this strikes me as hilarious.
@junglemanlawyer1 Frank trigg was a NCAA Div 1 wrestler the judo player Bill Simpson was not a high end Judoka meaning no Olympic try outs or no international medals or titles to speak of as far as I know last time I checked NCAA Div 1 is pretty good .
@junglemanlawyer1 Are you retarded?.... NCAA 1st Division is a GREAT wreslter.. frank trigg is a great wreslter and MMA fighter.. he is very well known.. where as this Judoka is a complete NOBODY.....and still won
If there is one style to beat wrestling and it's domination over MMA, its judo. It teaches takedowns, takedown defense, and submissions. It's also dirt cheap and far more common than wrestling.
You guys should look at sambo. It's wrestling and judo. I wrestled in high school and practice judo now, and judo is much better for a combat situation. Not that wrestling isn't good. Any type of training in grappling will give you an edge in a fight.
anyway, good look with your "combat" training (L O FUCKING L) i'm sure your full contact sparring will serve you well in any self defense situations you get into ....of wait I forgot ( jjj doesn't do full contact sparring) guess you'll just have to pray that the techniques you've been taught aren't total bullshit. hahahaha
@CEO1451 Difficult for wrestlers to transition to MMA? Where are you getting this? Wrestlers are amongst the most common to find success in MMA today, and the positions they're used to are also important in MMA, and can translate well into it with a bit of training. I can name A LOT of top fighters off the top of my head who used to be wrestlers: Couture, Henderson, Lesnar, Coleman, Sonnen, Okami, Lindland, Randleman, Kerr, Hughes, Ortiz... I can name more if it weren't for the character limit
@CEO1451 Chokes are one of the higher percentage submission MMA wrestlers do. It's just that in this video, we're dealing with Frank Trigg here, also known as the "Rear Naked Joke". Lost three times via rear naked choke in MMA, two coming from another wrestler (Matt Hughes). And here he is, being susceptible to chokes even earlier in his career. Something about this Trigg and his neck that makes him lose to chokes a lot.
Basically, it should have been a Catch As Catch Can Wrestler. The Catch wrestler would have done a Go Behind and either suplex the guy or gone for a submission since Catch Wrestling has TONS of submissions! The Catch Wrestler would've had a better chance than this Greco-Roman/Free Style dude.
People need to realize that in MMA wrestling is dominate because they learn ALL ground disciplines including Ju jitsu. If you put the best wrestler against the best Judo or Jiu Jitsu practiioner, and the Wrestler knew nothing but wrestler, 9 out of 10 times the Jiu Jitsu guy wins. It's just the way it is.
@Shotgunsteve2733 In a grappling-only fight, that's likely the case. in an MMA match, no it's not, because it's way different once strikes get into the mix. With wrestlers being good at takedowns and establishing a dominant position, they can rain down blows and maintain a dominant position over the other guy. For a BJJ guy to get a submission, they should first control the opponent, but wrestlers are hard to control on the ground. Either one has a fighting chance against the other in MMA
well i cant uderstand why that "wrestler" is so easy to beat and why when he was on the ground doesnt do anything. he doesnt do anything at all. no attempt to do anything at all which proves that this is a prepared show. predicted match. set up scene fight.
Why not throw? But he even not attempt to do anything at all. We expect to see hard fight instead there is nothing he just lied down like stone. No attempt to block attack at all. However i also share the opinion that simple wrestling have very little chance vs any other martial art. But i am 100% sure that i can throw this judo man from this position by 1001 diferent ways using the RFS/SFS fight style.
@tomgibson605 i dont do wrestling, but i know for a fact that wrestling IS A MARTIAL ART, like saying taekwondo isnt a martial art because we spend part time training for tournaments, come on man....
@evil Wrestling is in no way shape or form a MARTIAL ART. The word "martial" Comes from the root word "Mars" or the Roman god of war. "Martial Art" is a term reserved for fighting systems that were originally developed for combat in a WAR or on the BATTLEFIELD at some point in whatever culture and that includes the original form of Tae kwondo. Wrestling is and always will be a SPORT. Don't get me wrong, wrestling gets a bad rep and actually has great things to teach, but it is not a martial art.
@noose357 IT WAS MADE FOR WAR. you can trace western wrestling back to the fucking greeks for christ's sake. why do you think a pin is considered a win? because in medieval times if you get tossed on your back in a full body suit of armor you're fucking dead. freestyle wrestling is basically catch wrestling without the submission holds. the only type of wrestling that you could argue isn't a martial art is greco roman. so kindly shut the fuck up if you don't know what you're talking about ok?
@zonetoful lolol your anger amuses me :) I'm sorry but wrestling is in no way a martial art. You can split hairs and pontificate all you want, but walking into a battle with just wrestling will get you killed.Of course there is something to be said for pins, but when you're talking wrestling "Without all the submission holds" I'm sorry faggot, but that's a SPORT.Hence all the points and ridiculous rules. Yeah, you try fighting with your GAME IRL and see how fast you get your teeth stomped in.
@noose357 ' "Martial Art" is a term reserved for fighting systems that were originally developed for combat in a WAR or on the BATTLEFIELD at some point in whatever culture ' By your very own definition, wrestling is a martial art. Now you say "walking into a battle with just wrestling will get you killed" yeah the same could be said for ANY martial art. Way to back peddle when cornered you stupid cocksucker.
@zonetoful Oh my, I've started arguing with a 12 yr old, what a surprise lmao. BY my own definition, learn how to use a dictionary you cum sucking retard. I know you love your WWE and wish it were a martial art, but NOBODY is teaching as such it is A GAME, A SPORT,A SAFE PASSTIME WITH LOTS OF RULES AND REGULATIONS THAT KEEPS EVERYONE NICE AND SAFE AND OUT OF HARMS WAY. Learn how to read faggot, you have no idea what you're talking about, You wrestling fan boys need to smarten and get real bitch.
@noose357 it looks like you've changed your mind as to what a martial art is AGAIN. guess what? judo has rules and regulations, as does does karate, taekwondo, muay thai, etc etc. i guess those aren't martial arts either are they? and nobody teaches wrestling as a martial art? I just told you about catch wrestling in my last post (which you probably don't know what that is) so you obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about. you even think wwe is actual wrestling. lol what a fag.
@zonetofulYour problem is you can't distinguish combat from sport.Yes,there are sport VERSIONS of Tae Kwon Do,Judo,Muay Thai, etc. But more importantly, I am talking martial art and not martial sport.I for example, learn a traditional form of Judo/Jujitsu. I learn eye gouges, biting techniques, vital area striking, as well as the original Kodokan throwing, pinning, choking, arm lock, techniques.I do compete in the sport of Judo, but what I learn is a MARTIAL ART. Stop changing your argument, slut.
@noose357 LOL "I for example learn a traditional form of JUDO" hate to tell you, but Judo was not created for combat, judo is the SPORT version of jujitsu. hence the "DO" I know your shitty mcdojo "sensei" told you otherwise, but there is no "eye gouges" or "biting techniques" in judo. that doesn't make it any less of a martial art or any less effective "irl" just as freestyle wrestling lacks submissions and holds that were originally in catch, doesn't make IT less than a martial art.
@zonetoful Lol your misinformation is hilarious. Well, that just shows how truly fucking stupid you are. Completely unware of any history is also is apparent. Unaware that when the Tokyo police department was deciding which form of hand-to-hand combat to teach their officers, they picked Judo over Jujitsu and use it to this day. MCMAP? The Marine Corps Fight system? Is HEAVILY based on Judo. So try telling any of those guys what you just said to me and watch as you get your head smashed. LOL :)
@noose357 ohhhhh so now it's up to the police and military to decide what is a martial art and what is not? is that your final definition? because up until the 1950's, the army and marines were trained in boxing, fencing and wait for it....wrestling. In fact, wrestling and boxing is still an integral part of Krav Maga. Is Krav maga not a martial art? Maybe you should call the Israelis and tell them to train at your mcdojo?
@zonetoful Did I say that? Don't slant or skew my words, please. The Marines did train in boxing and wrestling until they realized VERY quickly from WWII that they needed an improvement in hand to hand combat because so many died in unarmed situtations when confronted with katana wielding, Jujitsu/Judo Japanese soldiers. Judo was brought to the U.S. in 1902, but didn't gain wide spread attention until the 1950s. At that point, training took a turn and incorporated different styles including Judo.
@noose357 now you're showing ignorance in the ww2 history department. might want to look up some of the famous pacific battles that involved hand to hand combat, you'll notice that the marines came out on top 9 out of 10, but I digress. you're making a jackass out of yourself, wrestling is all about control, control your opponents body and you come out on top, you're right a 4 year old could understand that, a 4 year old could also understand how and why it would be considered a martial art.
@zonetoful Ok you seriously need to check your resources. 9 out of 10? Show me your resources. You're an ignorant fan boy who didn't even read my original comment. I said I wasn't knocking wrestling as it has very useful things to teach ( I said nothing of it's efficacy) only that it's not a martial art, which it's not.
Lol and you can try and accuse me of being in a mcdojo all you want but that doesn't make it true. You probably don't even train anything and are most likely a UFC fanboy whose lip quivers at Brock Lesnar's cock and would like to "wrestle" it into your mouth. UFC is not the end all be all of martial arts. Sorry to disappoint you brah, but there was a whole world of warriors out there before Royce Gracie and Brock Lesnar. K? :)
but i guess it doesn't matter, think what you want. I'm doing you a favor by telling you that you look like an ignorant faggot when you say retarded shit like "wrestling isn't a martial art" but hey, if you want to be an ignorant japanophile and jizz your pants whenever someone mentions the word "sushi", you didn't even bother to address Krav Maga (which again just highlights your ignorance) I guess I can't change that. just hope you never get in a fight with a wrestler (yes, you'll lose)
@zonetof It's not a martial art, no matter how many times your coach tells you after you suck his cock, it's not. It's not my opinion or suggestion,it's by sheer definition alone.I know all about Krava Maga. It's not what I'm discussing.Krav Maga is in and of itself a martial art, as it incorporates many styles together. And trust me,a wrestler is about as worrysome to me as a cloudy day.All that strength is useless when your head is split open/unconcious etc.
@noose357 it is a martial art, I've already proven that and the only thing you can counter my arguments with is to continually change YOUR definition each time. Krav Maga is based in wrestling and boxing (you don't know shitt) and anyone who's had any experience with MCMAP will tell you it's quite literally a fucking joke (as well as your cute little "traditional" jap jujitsu) you want sources on ww2 H2H look no further than iwo jima or saipan where H2H was prevalant (hint: the japs lost)
@zonetoful Gosh! I've been so stupid. Herp derp, I got so caught up in my passion for martial arts, that I didn't realize I was baited and hooked by a very crafty troll. I congratulate you sir, I'm not one to give in to trolls, but you did get me. I don't usually debate with trolls, but wth. My definition is the same. Krav maga is NOT wrestling. Krav Maga advocates ANTI-GRAPPLING techs you moron, you just undid yourself lmfao. Your Jap talk is funny. (I'm not Japanese btw, but good try.)
@zonetoful we also had them outnumbered and beat before we went to iwo jima and they where just there to die.. not to win... use good examples next time.. u cant compair a martial art in a gunfight.. thats worse than the my dad can beat ure dad argument
@blushady Wrestling + Bjj = Ultimate Grappling. When it comes to Takedown Defense and Offense Wrestling is the Best. When it comes to Submission Defense and Offense Bjj is the Best. The Judo player won because he knew that Wrestlers Only Focus on Takedowns and Not on Submissions.
@noose357 "Judo - A sport of unarmed combat derived from jujitsu and intended to train the body and mind." - since you wanted me to read a dictionary ;- ) Judo was not made for combat. you think Kano specifically created Judo to teach to the military? maybe your dumbass should read up on your own martial art. The fact that they chose to use Judo for their training just strengthens my own argument . so done yet? because you're not only ignorant of wrestling's origins but of judo's as well.
@zonetoful Wow,man you are so far off it's scary.Wrestling's definition is so simple a 4 yr old could understand it,whereas Judo actually transcends the Western world's extremely poor perception of a REAL unarmed combat system. You choose to ignore my points and don't answer my retorts,so there's no point arguing with you.I'd get better conversation from a lump of shit, and it'd probably have better personality.Wrestling is a nice, safe sport/game.I'm glad you like it, it's not a martial art :)
@zonetoful No,I said nothing of looking up Judo in a dictionnary. You know nothing of Judo so please stop acting like you know what you're talking about. If you did know, you'd realize that Judo was NOT made to be a sport that went against everything that Jigoro Kano(the Founder of Judo) stood for.He created Judo to be a lifetime undertaking for health, both mental and physical, and SELF-DEFENSE.The Olympic Committe weakened Judo by making it a sport. It's a martial art, so educate yourself dumbass.
@tomgibson605 Judo is NOT a martial art. It is a sport derived from a martial art. It is derived from JuJutsu. If you ever decide to take up Judo you will learn this. The Yodan instructing the class will tell you this.
@MrAristes first of all i have been doing judo since i was three years old (14 years) and second of all my father is a Yodan and i have been to the Kodokan to train and i have fought internationally and trained in Korea so don't tell me what judo is got that. now it is true many people treat judo like a sport but by the philosophy of the great educator Kano shihan Judo is indeed a martial art and it is martial because it has moves that can kill whereas wrestling does not
@tomgibson605 I'll choose to believe your story. Having said that, the term "Martial Art" is a Western term originally intended for Eastern arts of unarmed combat or warfare. By this standard judo is not a martial art. That is how I look at it. Remember that Master Kano did not use the term art (Jutsu), he used way (Do) as Judo is a path to enrichment. Today the term Martial Arts is used broadly to label boxing, BJJ, etc. so the answer may be that we are both right. Hope you have a good day.
Depends on wrestling type. Pure simple wrestling maybe not. But SFS wrestling will definetely kill or at very least will cause a heavy trauma. In my country the word Boretz is used for a "wrestler" but also means "fighter". SFS combines throws with kicks, punches, strikes, pushes, pulls and many other moves. Also in SFS you fight with clothes, steel boots,jackets,hats.etc. The throws guaranteed maximum damage .
My cousin for example is judo black belt champion with two gold medals. He decided to join and fight in Cage fight, bet fight. The fight was judo vs boretz. But SFS style boretz. The Boretz perform "the melnitza move"(windmil)Which is combo move left hand strikes judo man's neck grip plus extremely heavy strike in throat and jaw while right hand strike knee and balls then right hand pull up while LH hold throat/arm. Then rotate oponent like windmil and smash him.My cousin was 3 months in hospital
Standard wrestling is too weak. Almost Any style can beat standard wrestling cause in there are not counter attacks, blocks, strikes etc. you cannot parry enemy attacks with this type of wrestling. Also is not allowed to attack oponent hands, legs and break his guard which is key to success. For example Zangief from street fighter games uses SFS type wrestling. First time i saw "pro wrestler" i was thinking that pro means super wrestling but it is standard wrestling too.
when i heard the westler was frank trigg i thought the judo guy was going to get beat up trigg has fought at highest level for years and isnt just your avarage wrestler just shows you how affective judo is
Wrestling is not completely ineffective in a fight, especially if your wrestling coach teaches you some of the "shady" moves. I think the advantage the judoka had over the wrestler is the wrestler was to accustomed to rules that prohibit choke holds.
The fight is only over when the referee says it is, and plus there was no guarantee that Trigg was actually out. For all anyone knew, Trigg was planning some kind of counter. That's why the judoka had to hold his choke longer
That was quick, that sure shows us that wrestling won't win you any fights. The weakness of current wrestling practice is the lack of submissions. The idea that pinning someone wins you the fights is great for 8 year olds, but it should evolve. (Submission Wrestling is no where near as prevalent in America, as it is in Japan.)
@rangedat I don't think wrestlers understand the tap part. When you get a strangle on you it's weird. You can breathe so you don't feel the alarm. When the lights get bubbly and the tunnel vision starts you're only a second or two before you go out.
@rangedat You would think so, but, fighter after fighter, boxing, wrestling, karate, most of them forget to tap. When I first started Judo I forgot to tap all the time. Finally one guy said, "Dude, Tap! don't be a hero!" LOL
Judo is Superior, wrestling is primitive. They have 2 leg take downs and all that easy shit in Judo. I fuck people up in wrestling and I know only HapkiDo. Judo is a more sophisticated art.
@SuperLONARDO The problem with brazilian jujitsu they don't really practice takedowns, so it is actually difficult to apply jujitsu techniques with someone who can defend takedowns, wrestlers and Judokans. I was saying Judo is superior as a takedown art actually, not an art by itself. There is actually no art that is the best, you have to combine them all to form a well rounded fighting style. I have sparred with BJJ people and their stand up is really bad.
@SuperLONARDO I've actually rolled with Jake Shields (a good example of a Brazilian Jujitsu guy) and seen his stand up, it is really bad. He is probably the best American in Brazilian Jujitsu, although his stand is less than Mediocre. He will lose to George St. Pierre, because GPS is way more well rounded in Stand up, takedowns and submissions. Jake will be knocked out most likely. George St. Pierre's take down defense is too good and Jake is solely reliant on Brazilian Jujitsu.
@youngstunna79 have you heard of saulo ribeiro? jiu jitsu university? he teaches takedowns and submissions but you do have a good point i think we should have open minds to everything so we learn so much more
@tadorjee well if you know good break falls you should never really get hurt, and also if you think a striker can beat a judoka, if they got taken down they wouldnt know what the hell to do on the ground. For example, in early mma everybody was a striker until BJJ and Judo guys came in and dominated.
Hahahaha, the 2nd commentator sound like Herbert, the old creepy man from Family Guy , back when he was young, especially when he first starts to talk.
@specialforces69 I think stating one or the other has more technique, isn't as accurate as stating one or the other inherently has more technique that's applicable to winning an MMA fight. Judo's got inherent submissions that relate to MMA while wrestling's focus on dominant position isn't much of an MMA finisher but could serve equally given the supplement of striking and submission any MMA fighter should be incorporating. Agreed on your post btw, the term technique is thrown around badly IMO
@jasonmoose111 In pro wrestling they are. I've definitely seen them score points in freestyle before so I'm guessing no.
One could argue that due to the illegality of leg locks in judo a wrestler could have a slight advantage in that regard. I'm a judoka so trust me when I say that your best bet if you ever fight one is take him to the ground and lock his leg. If you stay stood up or expose your neck you're finished.
@starkyliam You have no idea wtf your talking about. Wtestling is all about tehnique know what the fuck your talking about dude , Ive been way stronger than some lighter wrestlers and beeten because of there skill not just strength
@rod4life123maggie lol dude shut up, i'm right, you're wrong...if you're gonna keep commenting/ say shit over something someone says over the internet, feel free, just remember how low you are lol.
@rod4life123maggie That probably just means you had shitty wrestling technique.....
and if you knew anything about Judo you'd know what rod was saying wasn't an attack on freestyle/greco, it was about HOW Judo technique works, about how you use minimal force as displayed here to use your opponent's aggression to execute good kuzushi and follow up with a throw or take down and fluid movement into a choke, jointlock, or other submission.
The wrestler jumped in low and got snagged. the end.
I have a question my friend told me (he is a wrestler)he got out of it because he got fungus from rubbing skin with other players is it true and if I want to do judo what are the bad thing as in diseases that i might get
@donayre21 It's fairly clean. I don't know about wrestling but all the skin to skin contact can lead to some nasty stuff being spread around. Judo focuses alot on randori where both stand and then bring the other to the ground with a throw or trip with not much skin to skin contact. Also the ground work both people where gi's so it's rather clean. All you have to do is wash your gi regularly and make sure the matts you'r on have been wiped down.
@charlieapeshit thanls for the feed back. One more thing if I joim judo are they going to make me chalenge someone the first day or the teacher teaches you for a week then make you do that.
@donayre21 Well I suppose it's how cruel your instructor is haha. But they usually teach you things with other beginners and go over "break falls" which is how to fall properly before you enter into any actual throwing with anyone so you and someone else don't get hurt.
@donayre21 I think it's because of the wide skin contact in wrestling or mma, thats why there are so many desease like staph infections or herpes gladiatorum... but with the judo-gi you prevent most of the skin to skin or skin to mat contact.. I'm sure there are some cases but the risk is rather slight with you and your training partner wearing a gi
The wrestler was Frank Trigg .. I think after being choked out by a Judoka, he decided to study Judo, thus becoming a 2nd degree black belt (as per Wikipedia) ... :-)
Pure wrestling will always lose to judo but for mma wrstlking is way better as wrestling is better in takedowns,, & you learn some bjj so youre also better in the ground game as for judo is awesome & its a great bas as you see both takedowns & submissions the problem with judo is the gi.
@Zahed9327 Not true. Take a look at a fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama (judo black belt) vs Chris Leben. Chris stated that Akiyama has 0 chance of taking him down because he trains wrestling and he said that he can stop ANY wrestler from taking him down. Well, when they fought, Akiyama took Leben down 5-6 times with ease. He used pure Judo against Leben, not wrestling. Problem with most judokas is that they need to adapt to no gi, which is happening now. But judo is better for MMA than wrestling.
@pcjudosambo I wouldn't say that, but it is good and once no gi becomes more prominent, it'll be more useful. Leben is an alright wrestler, but he really doesn't use it. Phil Davis, Tom Lawlor, or Chael Sonnen are much better wrestlers. They would probably not be taken down as easily. Akiyama sucks, so he's not really a good example of judo or MMA.
@beeeefcurtains Akiyama's judo is very good and his transition from GI to NO GI has been good as well. Is he the best Judoka in MMA, heck no but he's good. Who has better Judo in MMA than Akiyama? .. I think Karo, Fedor, Dong Hyun-Kim (who recently outgrapped Nate Diaz), Yoshida, Jon Jones (although he's a wrestler, even he said that it's more of a Judo takedown), Rick Hawn ... all of these are better in MMA Judo but still, Akiyama's judo is up there.
@pcjudosambo you forgot to mention Hector Lombard. He's the current Middleweight Champion on Bellator. Plus he only has two losses and stands at 5 ft 9 which is short for a middleweight. you should check him out
I wouldn't go so far as to say that judo is "better" for MMA than wrestling is, but I do agree that it is just as effective when it comes to takedowns, and even more so in the clinch. It also transitions easier into BJJ than wrestling does. However, judo's takedowns are limited in range; wrestlers go for double and single legs while judoka's do not. The judoka needs to have a grip on you in order to take you down, whereas wrestlers can simply just shoot for a takedown.
@Charkoly2 I see your point but remember, double leg and single leg takedowns are very much part of Judo. Although, recent rules states that grabbing the legs is not allowed, it's still extensively practiced in the dojo. Single & double leg takedowns were recently used by a black belt Judoka Dong Hyun Kim (at UFC 125). He took down Nate Diaz several times using double/single leg takedown and he out grappled a brown belt BJJ Diaz on the ground. So these takedowns are part of Judo too.
@Charkoly2 Not so ! single and double legs take downs are very common and easy to do, I was in class a week ago and it so happenthat we were practicing that move.
@mikekeaarney I'd like to see Trigg active again. His luck in the UFC hasn't been that great but I always liked him and think he's still got potential to be a real contender
I'd imagine he did take judo and BJJ, among other staples of MMA fighting, at least to the extent of the basics. He just had bad luck with chokes, even in UFC. I like the guy too, just wish he defended a bit better so he could string more wins together. (not that he's a slouch)
It's the person who practices the art. That choke move is obviously not EXCLUSIVELY judo. Judo is actually a modernized form of wrestling. It has what Greco-Roman focuses on.

If there is one style to beat wrestling and it's domination over MMA, its judo. It teaches takedowns, takedown defense, and submissions. It's also dirt cheap and far more common than wrestling.
Octane64 2 months ago
You guys should look at sambo. It's wrestling and judo. I wrestled in high school and practice judo now, and judo is much better for a combat situation. Not that wrestling isn't good. Any type of training in grappling will give you an edge in a fight.

I can name more if it weren't for the character limit
sukotsutoclone2 4 months ago

Shotgunsteve2733 5 months ago
@Shotgunsteve2733 In a grappling-only fight, that's likely the case. in an MMA match, no it's not, because it's way different once strikes get into the mix. With wrestlers being good at takedowns and establishing a dominant position, they can rain down blows and maintain a dominant position over the other guy. For a BJJ guy to get a submission, they should first control the opponent, but wrestlers are hard to control on the ground. Either one has a fighting chance against the other in MMA

Don't get me wrong, wrestling gets a bad rep and actually has great things to teach, but it is not a martial art.
noose357 3 months ago

@noose357 ' "Martial Art" is a term reserved for fighting systems that were originally developed for combat in a WAR or on the BATTLEFIELD at some point in whatever culture ' By your very own definition, wrestling is a martial art. @noose357 it looks like you've changed your mind as to what a martial art is AGAIN. guess what? judo has rules and regulations, as does does karate, taekwondo, muay thai, etc etc. i guess those aren't martial arts either are they? and nobody teaches wrestling as a martial art? I just told you about catch wrestling in my last post (which you probably don't know what that is) so you obviously don't know what the fuck you're talking about. you even think wwe is actual wrestling. lol what a fag.
zonetoful 3 months ago
@zonetofulYour problem is you can't distinguish combat from sport.Yes,there are sport VERSIONS of Tae Kwon Do,Judo,Muay Thai, etc. But more importantly, I am talking martial art and not martial sport.I for example, learn a traditional form of Judo/Jujitsu. I learn eye gouges, biting techniques, vital area striking, as well as the original Kodokan throwing, pinning, choking, arm lock, techniques.I do compete in the sport of Judo, but what I learn is a MARTIAL ART. Stop changing your argument, slut.
noose357 3 months ago
@noose357 LOL "I for example learn a traditional form of JUDO" hate to tell you, but Judo was not created for combat, judo is the SPORT version of jujitsu. hence the "DO" I know your shitty mcdojo "sensei" told you otherwise, but there is no "eye gouges" or "biting techniques" in judo. that doesn't make it any less of a martial art or any less effective "irl" just as freestyle wrestling lacks submissions and holds that were originally in catch, doesn't make IT less than a martial art.
zonetoful 3 months ago
@zonetoful Lol your misinformation is hilarious. Well, that just shows how truly fucking stupid you are. Completely unware of any history is also is apparent. Unaware that when the Tokyo police department was deciding which form of hand-to-hand combat to teach their officers, they picked Judo over Jujitsu and use it to this day. MCMAP? The Marine Corps Fight system? Is HEAVILY based on Judo. So try telling any of those guys what you just said to me and watch as you get your head smashed. LOL :)
noose357 3 months ago
@noose357 ohhhhh so now it's up to the police and military to decide what is a martial art and what is not? is that your final definition? because up until the 1950's, the army and marines were trained in boxing, fencing and wait for it....wrestling. In fact, wrestling and boxing is still an integral part of Krav Maga. Is Krav maga not a martial art? Maybe you should call the Israelis and tell them to train at your mcdojo?
zonetoful 3 months ago
@zonetoful Did I say that? Don't slant or skew my words, please. The Marines did train in boxing and wrestling until they realized VERY quickly from WWII that they needed an improvement in hand to hand combat because so many died in unarmed situtations when confronted with katana wielding, Jujitsu/Judo Japanese soldiers. Judo was brought to the U.S. in 1902, but didn't gain wide spread attention until the 1950s. At that point, training took a turn and incorporated different styles including Judo.
noose357 3 months ago
@noose357 now you're showing ignorance in the ww2 history department. might want to look up some of the famous pacific battles that involved hand to hand combat, you'll notice that the marines came out on top 9 out of 10, but I digress. you're making a jackass out of yourself, wrestling is all about control, control your opponents body and you come out on top, you're right a 4 year old could understand that, a 4 year old could also understand how and why it would be considered a martial art.
zonetoful 3 months ago
@zonetoful Ok you seriously need to check your resources. 9 out of 10? Show me your resources. You're an ignorant fan boy who didn't even read my original comment. noose357 3 months ago
but i guess it doesn't matter, think what you want. zonetoful 3 months ago 8
And trust me,a wrestler is about as worrysome to me as a cloudy day.All that strength is useless when your head is split open/unconcious etc.
noose357 3 months ago
@noose357 it is a martial art, I've already proven that and the only thing you can counter my arguments with is to continually change YOUR definition each time. Krav Maga is based in wrestling and boxing (you don't know shitt) and anyone who's had any experience with MCMAP will tell you it's quite literally a fucking joke (as well as your cute little "traditional" jap jujitsu) you want sources on ww2 H2H look no further than iwo jima or saipan where H2H was prevalant (hint: the japs lost)

The fact that they chose to use Judo for their training just strengthens my own argument . so done yet? because you're not only ignorant of wrestling's origins but of judo's as well.
zonetoful 3 months ago 7
@zonetoful Wow,man you are so far off it's scary.Wrestling's definition is so simple a 4 yr old could understand it,whereas Judo actually transcends the Western world's extremely poor perception of a REAL unarmed combat system. You choose to ignore my points and don't answer my retorts,so there's no point arguing with you.I'd get better conversation from a lump of shit, and it'd probably have better personality.Wrestling is a nice, safe sport/game.I'm glad you like it, it's not a martial art :)
noose357 3 months ago
@zonetoful No,I said nothing of looking up Judo in a dictionnary. You know nothing of Judo so please stop acting like you know what you're talking about. If you did know, you'd realize that Judo was NOT made to be a sport that went against everything that Jigoro Kano(the Founder of Judo) stood for.He created Judo to be a lifetime undertaking for health, both mental and physical, and SELF-DEFENSE.The Olympic Committe weakened Judo by making it a sport. It's a martial art, so educate yourself dumbass.
noose357 2 months ago
@tomgibson605 Judo is NOT a martial art. It is a sport derived from a martial art. It is derived from JuJutsu. If you ever decide to take up Judo you will learn this. The Yodan instructing the class will tell you this.
MrAristes 6 months ago in playlist judo vs
@MrAristes first of all i have been doing judo since i was three years old (14 years) and second of all my father is a Yodan and i have been to the Kodokan to train and i have fought internationally and trained in Korea so don't tell me what judo is got that. now it is true many people treat judo like a sport but by the philosophy of the great educator Kano shihan Judo is indeed a martial art and it is martial because it has moves that can kill whereas wrestling does not
tomgibson605 5 months ago
@tomgibson605 I'll choose to believe your story. Having said that, the term "Martial Art" is a Western term originally intended for Eastern arts of unarmed combat or warfare. By this standard judo is not a martial art. That is how I look at it. Remember that Master Kano did not use the term art (Jutsu), he used way (Do) as Judo is a path to enrichment. Today the term Martial Arts is used broadly to label boxing, BJJ, etc. so the answer may be that we are both right. Hope you have a good day.
MrAristes 5 months ago
@tomgibson605
LORDVADER357 5 months ago
My cousin for example is judo black belt champion with two gold medals. He decided to join and fight in Cage fight, bet fight. The fight was judo vs boretz. But SFS style boretz. The Boretz perform "the melnitza move"(windmil)Which is combo move left hand strikes judo man's neck grip plus extremely heavy strike in throat and jaw while right hand strike knee and balls then right hand pull up while LH hold throat/arm. Then rotate oponent like windmil and smash him.My cousin was 3 months in hospital

@LORDVADER357 Ok you make a good point but i was talking about standard wrestling in America like the guy in the video practiced
tomgibson605 5 months ago
@tomgibson605

@youngstunna79 brazilian jiu jitsu is better then wrestling in my opinion
SuperLONARDO 10 months ago
@SuperLONARDO The problem with brazilian jujitsu they don't really practice takedowns, so it is actually difficult to apply jujitsu techniques with someone who can defend takedowns, wrestlers and Judokans. I was saying Judo is superior as a takedown art actually, not an art by itself. There is actually no art that is the best, you have to combine them all to form a well rounded fighting style. I have sparred with BJJ people and their stand up is really bad.
youngstunna79 10 months ago
@SuperLONARDO I've actually rolled with Jake Shields (a good example of a Brazilian Jujitsu guy) and seen his stand up, it is really bad. He is probably the best American in Brazilian Jujitsu, although his stand is less than Mediocre. He will lose to George St. Pierre, because GPS is way more well rounded in Stand up, takedowns and submissions. Jake will be knocked out most likely. George St. Pierre's take down defense is too good and Jake is solely reliant on Brazilian Jujitsu.
youngstunna79 10 months ago
@youngstunna79 have you heard of saulo ribeiro? jiu jitsu university? he teaches takedowns and submissions but you do have a good point i think we should have open minds to everything so we learn so much more

I did Boxing,Thai boxing and Krav maga and now trying Judo.
I think Judo is the most dangerous.
When ur friend throw U on the ground and U land with ur back........than U will know.
Judo (sport version) can not hit good punches. So U have to be very careful not to go too close.
In the street I think we can beat Judo if we have enough space around to do boxing foot work.
tadorjee 10 months ago
@tadorjee well if you know good break falls you should never really get hurt, and also if you think a striker can beat a judoka, if they got taken down they wouldnt know what the hell to do on the ground. For example, in early mma everybody was a striker until BJJ and Judo guys came in and dominated.

RiccoSuave69 10 months ago
@specialforces69 I think stating one or the other has more technique, isn't as accurate as stating one or the other inherently has more technique that's applicable to winning an MMA fight. Judo's got inherent submissions that relate to MMA while wrestling's focus on dominant position isn't much of an MMA finisher but could serve equally given the supplement of striking and submission any MMA fighter should be incorporating. Agreed on your post btw, the term technique is thrown around badly IMO

ok im confused in freestyle wrestling chokes like that arent allowed right?
jasonmoose111 11 months ago
@jasonmoose111 In pro wrestling they are. I've definitely seen them score points in freestyle before so I'm guessing no.
One could argue that due to the illegality of leg locks in judo a wrestler could have a slight advantage in that regard. I'm a judoka so trust me when I say that your best bet if you ever fight one is take him to the ground and lock his leg. If you stay stood up or expose your neck you're finished.

and if you knew anything about Judo you'd know what rod was saying wasn't an attack on freestyle/greco, it was about HOW Judo technique works, about how you use minimal force as displayed here to use your opponent's aggression to execute good kuzushi and follow up with a throw or take down and fluid movement into a choke, jointlock, or other submission.
The wrestler jumped in low and got snagged. the end.

I have a question my friend told me (he is a wrestler)he got out of it because he got fungus from rubbing skin with other players is it true and if I want to do judo what are the bad thing as in diseases that i might get
donayre21 1 year ago
@donayre21 It's fairly clean. I don't know about wrestling but all the skin to skin contact can lead to some nasty stuff being spread around. Judo focuses alot on randori where both stand and then bring the other to the ground with a throw or trip with not much skin to skin contact. Also the ground work both people where gi's so it's rather clean. All you have to do is wash your gi regularly and make sure the matts you'r on have been wiped down.

@charlieapeshit thanls for the feed back. One more thing if I joim judo are they going to make me chalenge someone the first day or the teacher teaches you for a week then make you do that.
donayre21 1 year ago
@donayre21 Well I suppose it's how cruel your instructor is haha. But they usually teach you things with other beginners and go over "break falls" which is how to fall properly before you enter into any actual throwing with anyone so you and someone else don't get hurt.
charlieapeshit 1 year ago
@donayre21 I think it's because of the wide skin contact in wrestling or mma, thats why there are so many desease like staph infections or herpes gladiatorum... but with the judo-gi you prevent most of the skin to skin or skin to mat contact.. I'm sure there are some cases but the risk is rather slight with you and your training partner wearing a gi

The wrestler was Frank Trigg .. I think after being choked out by a Judoka, he decided to study Judo, thus becoming a 2nd degree black belt (as per Wikipedia) ... :-)

@Zahed9327 I think he began training Judo after being choked out by a Judo guy.
pcjudosambo 1 year ago
Pure wrestling will always lose to judo but for mma wrstlking is way better as wrestling is better in takedowns,, & you learn some bjj so youre also better in the ground game as for judo is awesome & its a great bas as you see both takedowns & submissions the problem with judo is the gi.
Zahed9327 1 year ago
@Zahed9327
You've never seen uchi mata counters against wrestlers in MMA?
yardape99 1 year ago
@Zahed9327 Not true. Take a look at a fight against Yoshihiro Akiyama (judo black belt) vs Chris Leben. Chris stated that Akiyama has 0 chance of taking him down because he trains wrestling and he said that he can stop ANY wrestler from taking him down. Well, when they fought, Akiyama took Leben down 5-6 times with ease. He used pure Judo against Leben, not wrestling. Problem with most judokas is that they need to adapt to no gi, which is happening now. But judo is better for MMA than wrestling.
pcjudosambo 1 year ago
@pcjudosambo I wouldn't say that, but it is good and once no gi becomes more prominent, it'll be more useful. Leben is an alright wrestler, but he really doesn't use it. Phil Davis, Tom Lawlor, or Chael Sonnen are much better wrestlers. They would probably not be taken down as easily. Akiyama sucks, so he's not really a good example of judo or MMA.
beeeefcurtains 1 year ago

Plus he only has two losses and stands at 5 ft 9 which is short for a middleweight. you should check him out
Gundoggak47 7 months ago
@Gundoggak47 Since I made that post I've noticed far more Judokas than ever before and yes, Lombard is one of them.

Charkoly2 1 year ago
@Charkoly2 I see your point but remember, double leg and single leg takedowns are very much part of Judo. Although, recent rules states that grabbing the legs is not allowed, it's still extensively practiced in the dojo. Single & double leg takedowns were recently used by a black belt Judoka Dong Hyun Kim (at UFC 125). He took down Nate Diaz several times using double/single leg takedown and he out grappled a brown belt BJJ Diaz on the ground. So these takedowns are part of Judo too.

@Charkoly2 Very True

@Charkoly2 Not so ! single and double legs take downs are very common and easy to do, I was in class a week ago and it so happenthat we were practicing that move.

@frigginjoe after this Trigg started his training in judo
mikekeaarney 11 months ago
@mikekeaarney I'd like to see Trigg active again. His luck in the UFC hasn't been that great but I always liked him and think he's still got potential to be a real contender
frigginjoe 11 months ago
@frigginjoe Is that the same Trigg that Matt Hughes beat twice???
jmcintyre90 10 months ago
@jmcintyre90 Yep, guess how :P
frigginjoe 10 months ago
@frigginjoe is this the same frank trigg that went on to fight in the UFC? if so his Bio states that in 1995 he started taking JUDO .
glock70 8 months ago
@glock70 Sure is.
I'd imagine he did take judo and BJJ, among other staples of MMA fighting, at least to the extent of the basics. He just had bad luck with chokes, even in UFC. I like the guy too, just wish he defended a bit better so he could string more wins together. (not that he's a slouch)
frigginjoe 8 months ago
It's the person who practices the art. That choke move is obviously not EXCLUSIVELY judo. Judo is actually a modernized form of wrestling. It has what Greco-Roman focuses on.
It's all about the fighter, not the art.
