Tracy recorded this song 4 years after it came out. The original artist, Kirsty MacColl did the high notes at the end that Tracy couldn't quite get. She was tragically killed saving her son from a speedboat at Cozumel by putting herself in front while moving him at the last moment. What a great song
@Dataceruption That is indeed Sir James Paul McCartney at the end in a cameo. Tracey was doing a part in his film "Give My Regards to Broad Street" at the time.
OB-viously you were not around back then like us geezers eh..
I'll let you in on the secret;
In the 1980's the rage was to be nostalgic about the '60's.
I'm old enough to remember the '70's too! Guess what decade we were nostalgic about then? The 1950's.....SO,..using logic, it would follow that now, in the 2000's, the nostalgia decade would be
The 1990's, which I hated then,..but now they seem not so bad., but NOT as great as the 1970's were..seriously, they were!
@RetroCaptain I graduated High School in 1987 and I grew up in NY.
I think you misunderstood my post. A lot of the comments below posted by the youngens thought that this was how we looked, acted and did on the town. My point was that this was a retro video and that it was not an example of the times. If you look at todays crap videos its always in some current scene. I was saying that there are better video examples of the dress and dancing. Like Madonna, Duran Duran, The Police.
@RetroCaptain I remember Glass Tiger had a lot of hot songs and top notch mullets. I liked them, they got the girls in the mood. I loved Platinum Blonde, men without hats, Men At Work, The Knack, RUSH and AC/DC / I wish I could do it all over again. This time I would buy shares in Microsoft. and then hit the clubs running.
I use to hang at The Tunnel and The Limelight in the Early 90's / Peter Gatiens clubs.
@TheIkkap I tried to send you a video, but it won't go through, so you'll have to look it up..
Spoons; Romantic Traffic, & Nova Heart
Spoons was as close to a local band where I went to High School. We there loved them, & had similar looks to the styles shown. Sandy (in R.T vid) made us guys crazy then. We almost had Glass Tiger do a concert at our school but they backed out.
They were then known as "Tokyo Rose" but were just discovered & hit the big time fame as Glass Tiger.
The 80's are what they were...a time to enjoy but move on. I will agree that we are getting away from some basic social principles. Texts have taken the place of phone calls and everyone is a nobody has a Twitter account like anyone really gives a rat's behind about their life. We used to visit relatives on Sunday...now we just hit them with a text or a Facebook post. Goodbye communication skills, hello keyboarding!
You're gonna hate a decade? Do you realize how insane it sounds to hate TIME? To hate the past! Do you think LIFE or TIME (not the magazines DB) gives a phuck about your petty transitory politics?! Obviously you don't, you can't or you won't. Pathetic.
@cindyandron yes but one HUGE x-class solar flare or EMP explosion and ALL texting, ALL twittering, ALL emails, ALL PHONECALLS, period - will come to a CRASHING HALT.
Yes, Tracey was sending up the 60's, and even the 70's (the glimpse of her in her room as a Bay City Rollers fan) but her boyfriend in his gold shirt was pure 80's. What a delightful video.
I always loved Tracy, this song, and her work on The Simpsons and her impersonation of Celine Dion in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. I thought she looked cuter in the end of the video in rags.
"Tracy Takes On". GOD I miss watching that as a little kid. I grew up in the 90s, and my mom and I used to absolutely love watching that show together. This as the theme song... brings back so many good memories. Miss those days. :'^)
I was born in 1979 but ironically enough I didn't discover this song in the 80's.
I discovered it on her HBO series Tracy Takes On. Imagine my delight when I saw this was a music video. My only regret was it took me 28 years to find it.
Man this brings back so many memories of my youth ...As much as i love Kirsty McCall , i prefer this version only because it's the one i'm familiar with .. classic tune all the same !
For some reason, I don't see Tracy as stunningly hot like some of you do. But she's okay. She has nice legs, ass, and eyes. And an English accent adds some attraction points since I'm American. But not blown away by her looks. But we all see things differently. This song on the other hand, blows me away! Great song!
brilliant! Tracey succh a gorgeous girl and incredibly funny. But this is not a typical 80s song. In fact it has a very 60s sound to it. But its also timeless oddly enough! Whatever its just fabulous and the video too.
Uprated. Great song, cute video, and she was great! What is she up to now? I laughed at her slippers in the supermarket cuz I caught myself a few years ago in fluffy mules in my supermarket in France where I live now. I forgot I had them on! Thanks to Angelinatiger for sharing this with me.
I know it's Kristy MacColl singing "Baby" as well as backing vocals, but I always thought that the "baby" was actually lifted/sampled from Kristy's original recording (they sound IDENTICAL) but then again Kristy could have just been really good at it. Nevertheless, I love this song and I love this video and I heard it on Sirius XM this morning and it made my day bright and cheery.
@beatlesonlyblog you sound like a serious Beatle fan ( Sir Paul McCartney) well I've been following the Fab 4 since I first saw them on the Jack Parr show in 1963 I've met Richard Dellelo the Apple house Hippie, Pete Best, Mal Evans, Jergen Vulmar Beatles photographer, I sat at a table with John Lennon and Yoko and Elliot Mintze at the pre awards dinner for the 75 Grammy Awards. So I was well aware it was James McCartney you SHITHEAD. Grow a sence of humor , lifes too short just ask John.
Parody or not, I stillmsay this was the best-recorded, best-arranged, and best-performed pop song of the '80s. That piano line kills me. Love this video.
I call Tracey Ullman's version the "Wall Of Sound" version. Kristy MacColl's version, while sounding almost exactly similar to this one (she did backing vocals and the "BAY-BEE!" part on this version, BTW..) didn't have the production "panache" this version had.
@MrJimmypage32 The eighties were actually pretty horrible music-wise kid. Trust me on that I was there I know. Listening to the radio back then was like standing in a swimming pool filled neck deep with shit. Then a cement truck pulls up, filled with more shit, and proceeds to empty it's contents over your head. Everyone I know hated music back then. All there was was just a bunch of shallow, angry, mean-spirited people walking around with the dumbest haircuts imaginable. It was an awful time.
@Souplesse000 So you didn't like how life was in the 80's. Still no reason for you to try to ruin the moment for others. I had a great time in the 80's and the problems I experienced back then had nothing to do with the music and era. No texting...instead people actually had guts to talk in person. No tweeting...people saved news for interesting conversations and hangouts. And...well, you get the picture. There were a ton of things to appreciate during the 80's era.
@blindthief Well said. I loved the 80's, though I had to work 65 hours per week. It was worth it. No texting,---All we had was pagers. California was still nice then, and I finished my engineering program. The standard of living was higher, and most women were more feminine and slimmer than now. Plus, in the first half of the decade, there was no HIV, and many dates were very sweet. If you do the risky thing on a date now, you can get sued for every penny or ruin your immune system. Yay 80's!
@blindthief The 80s were tough but the music, the shows, the colors, the crazy ass fashions, the crazy hair were worth the pain! What the fuck o people have today that is so fucking great? Justin Bieber,American Idol? The fucking rap and hip hop shit from mother fuckers whom cant sing, play instruments nor have any talent? WTF gimme back my 80s and 70s innstead baby
@Roggiedodgie How dare you diss my username...my other option was hamburgerbutt and cheesytits! Some fool called me "cheesetits" when he tried insulting me here on Youtube! Tonites Grammys were so sad! That Likey Minaj was a hysterical crap! How embarrassing it must be to be MaCartney seeing the future of music tonight
@mrfrogbutt1 Indeed, give me a time machine and rest assured I am getting the hell out of this modern time. I would happily live my entire life in the 60's and 80's, the two coolest decades in the last 100 years by far.
@Stiletos I exist in 2012 but secretly live in the past..i have all retro ipod and watch retro tv,old movies and pretend Im in the past...wheres my tape deck?
@Souplesse000 - Sorry you had such a bad go of the '80s, friend, but you're wrong. Until, I would say, around 1986 The music was still very good, even though record execs became more concerned with money than the music. As you said, I was there, so I know. blindthief hit it on the head. If God gave me the opportunity to spend 1 year in the '80s at the cost of 10 years off my life, I'd do it in a skinny minute! To quote Bryan Adams' song Summer of '69, "Those were the best days of my life"!!
@MrJimmypage32 We must have a lot of the same tastes in music. I saw you leave this exact comment on another video I saw earlier. It was... Missing Person's Words! Or maybe it was Bananarama's Cruel Summer? I already subbed to you earlier when I saw that and now I see you here. lol So, this is a cool coincidence. And I agree with you. I think any decade before the 2000's were simpler, more enjoyable, less stressful times with better music!
I can remember a buddy & I crushing on Tracy on MTV (before it turned into the evil corporate empire with their corporate cool). Loved this tune from my first listen on KJET, a new wave station. Love the nostalgia/retro sound, pays homage to 50s-60s pop instead of reinventing it. The video is timeless too & will never be dated! Tracy being Tracy, funny, poignant, & of course uber-talented! ...okay...and a hot little cutie too! Glad I can still find it, thanks for sharing. Peace!
@TheXtro101: technically, no. the song was orignally recorded and released in 1979 by Kirsty MacColl in the United Kingdom. However, complications involving a strike at her distributors prevented the single from being shipped and promoted properly, preventing release of the single. In Tracey's version, MacColl performed backing vocals, and reprised her original "bay-ay-be-ee" @1:52.
It's hard to say if I like the Tracy Ullman version better or the Kirsty MacColl version better. Both are both done very well. That said, I think Kim Wilde sings it the best. ;)
tracey threw away a promising career in the uk back in the late eighties. seduced by the bright lights of usa, she went on to introduce the world to the simpsons!
simon cowell seems to be able to combine his tv roles in both countries at the same time. i wonder if she has any regrets?
@neathlad2002 Uhhh... YOu realize she's done some very good movies which were popular as well as critically well recieved...and several successful TV series...and live shows....right?
Traceyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!! We *adore* you still here in the US! You are talented, beautiful, sexy, hysterically funny and - a plethora of other things too numerous to mention lest I begin to sound like a raving blabbering maniac! You are - simply - the best. Wow. I summed it up a word. Terribly descriptive at that. I'll STFU now. Hmmmph. :)
Exactly what I was thinking. You're pretty badass when Paul McCartney is in your video.

This is an early 80's song
BUT
it is done in an early 60's style with early 60's era video scenes.
This does not represent the 80's so I am confused by the comments
This song is more of a nostalgia song than anything else

@MrJimmypage32 We must have a lot of the same tastes in music. I saw you leave this exact comment on another video I saw earlier. It was... Missing Person's Words! Or maybe it was Bananarama's Cruel Summer? I already subbed to you earlier when I saw that and now I see you here. lol So, this is a cool coincidence. And I agree with you. I think any decade before the 2000's were simpler, more enjoyable, less stressful times with better music!

@MrJimmypage32 Definitely agree!

@MrJimmypage32 It's ironic that you want to go back to the 80s. It looks like Tracy wants to go back to the 50s!

PAUL MCCARTNEY :D

I can remember a buddy & I crushing on Tracy on MTV (before it turned into the evil corporate empire with their corporate cool). Loved this tune from my first listen on KJET, a new wave station. Love the nostalgia/retro sound, pays homage to 50s-60s pop instead of reinventing it. The video is timeless too & will never be dated! Tracy being Tracy, funny, poignant, & of course uber-talented! ...okay...and a hot little cutie too! Glad I can still find it, thanks for sharing. Peace!

@redfishradical KJET. Oh my. To quote the real Obi Wan, "Now, that's a name I've not heard in a long time...a long time."

This has probably already been answered but is the scene with Tracy & Paul McCartney real?

This song was originaly released during the "eighties"(1983)but has that "groovy" 60's rhythm&sound.

Brilliant! Tracey looks a bit like Rosa Luxemburg. May be she has polish ancestors as well.

@neathlad2002
You realize that Tracy is a big star in the US though, right? I mean she's been in a ton of movies and still has a show on Showtime.

Hmmmph. :)
