  • Eh, this leaves too much unaccounted for. For example, Haitians tend to have low IQ's, and their neighbors in Fidel Castro's Cuba enjoy much better living standards than Haitians despite the communist setup on that island.

  • @jdamn fwancisco danconia don't have a wisp

  • down with cowuption, down with iwan!

  • The earthquake in Haiti struck the primate city of Port-Au-Prince dead center. The earthquake near Chile was off-shore hundreds of miles away from population centers (why not ask why more people weren't affected in Florida by the Haiti quake)?

And Friedman went to Chile to award Pinochet with the "gold" seal of US approval! Were happy so long as the bankers are rich and the labor is cheap!

  • The more I hear about Chile, the more I like it. Check out Jose Pinera, the guy who came up with their private pension system watch?v=8IOVKtMiuas

  • he's wrong about the magnitude of the earthquakes. Chili's earthquake was 6.9 magnitude while Haiti's earthquake was 7.0. Now this gives us a better comparison of the two countries' system and I believe makes his point only stronger.

  • Actually the one he's talking about was an 8.8 of the coast of the Maule Region, and the death toll was only 350, not 800. Both cities had around the same population also. So I think this is what makes his point stronger. But don't correct someone with the wrong facts thanks.

  • This explains very well how things went in regards to the two earthquakes. Thanks for making this.

  • Bernake was a student of Friedman, hence the term relatively free

  • I wish Yaron had mentioned the absence of property rights in Haiti, and the deleterious effect it has on building construction and maintenance. I think that is an important aspect of the devastation.

  • Japan is also an example of an advanced industrial and relatively free nation that suffers low casualties during frequent earthquakes.

  • I like the video a lot. It's a great point. I think I should, however, point out that Argentina is ranked 135th, according to Heritage's economic freedom ratings, but has a GDP per capita (ppp) similar to Chile's. Also, the video production work could be a little better. The camera should be closer to Yaron and be framed by the rule of thirds, not dead center. You probably wanted to get the picture of Rand into the shot, but that is less important than framing who you're interviewing well.

  • Friedman is NOT a socialist, far from it. He classified himself as a classical liberal and as a libertarian.

  • @LakeShaman Yeah so? who cares about whales... djiiiiseees

  • Milton Friedman saves lives!

  • @pazzy001 MIton friedman is a socialist

  • @stephleom LOL! If Milton Friedman is a socialist, then Mickey Mouse is a duck.

  • @spudmustang I dont care what Friedman says he is himself, the Republicans say they support capitalism even though they clearly don't etc. Friedman supported a wellfare state and central banking for example. So ok he is no socialist, but he's clearly a conservative/social-democrat.

  • @stephleom Touché!

  • Pinochet's regime was Fascism done correctly.

  • YARON OWNS PAUL KRUGMAN!! Check out that clowns krugmans blog about this topic

  • I totally agree with all you're saying. But our gov't is now in the hands of fascist bankers, we're c oming apart, and you're not addressing this, or seem to be aware of it. Have you read any of Carl Denninger's work online, detailing Bernanke's and Geithner's crimes? We are in the midst of an economic crisis, worse than we've ever had.

    Where are you on this?

  • I concur, I never hear much form Yaron Brook about how the Fed is bankrupting the country, and sound money is preferable in a capitalist economy.

  • Go to the Ayn Rand Center and Ayn Rand Institute websites and search for information on the financial crisis. He has spoken at length about this.

  • I would gladly have him in the White House as my president!

  • thanks for posting.

  • "brutal, you know, bad, dictatorship" isn't enough of a condemnation of Pinochet's evil regime.

Other than that, a fine video!

Bravo and keep up the good work!

  • I wonder how would YOU deal with the communist onslaught back then?

  • Without mercy (like Pinochet). And without cruelty (unlike Pinochet).

  • I don't think he has to go off into a long denunciation of the regime when he is making a point about the need of a free market to better survive natural disasters. Maybe if he was giving a talk on how Pinochet's dictatorship lead to suffering (as compared to a true free country), but he was not giving such a talk. Therefore, I think his remarks are sufficient.

  • I had no idea Chile had a completely private social security system.

  • I like this video.

  • Great points. This is a useful (but tragic) case study.

  • Very well said, as usual.

  • Yaron Brook is bad ass...i nominate him for leader, i mean President.

  • down with cowuption! down with howific sociawists! did anyone say biggus dickus?

  • Nice video. Thanks for posting =)
