The student was not distracting anyone else in the class, and the fact that the professor did not react to him leaving shows that he doesnt really care about the students education. If the kid was being a jackass about it (not silencing phone, etc), I could understand the teacher's decision, but the student was trying to be discreet about it. Good for him (Professor). Students ae supposed to be in class to learn. I used to teach a vocation and I did not allow cell phones during class time, period. Anything that is distracting to other students was not tolerated. I just threw them out of my class, I never broke anybody's property. That was a bad move, but I'll bet that particular student didn't text in that professors class ever again. I wonder if the professor gets the irony of discussing John Locke and destroying private property??

All social etiquette and respect is gone. No, the prof shouldn't have broken it... but the school should have a policy of immediate dismissal for anyone using one in class so the prof wouldn't have to go out on his own limb, risk his employment, etc.. defending something that students this age shouldn't be forcing him to defend
