I have a dream of playing with him and getting exposed. if you could check out my covers and thumb this comment up, i would really appreciate it. plus, my last name is beer.. that should be convincing in itself. thank you for reading
@manu1695 Yes. You can use the Dm pentatonic when the progression (in Am) changes to the Dm chord. Revert back to the Am pent when the chord changes back the root.
yo john, i was wondering if you could talk about spicing up the blues. major to minor. getting away from that same old minor penatonic. maybe some diminished scales for transitioning? idk . whatever floats your boat. i'd love any more geetar lessons. keep playing the blues!
It's weird to see a global superstar with 10,000,000+ fans standing in his room playing his guitar like all of us small town chaps. Great playing, John!
@1brannon10 u kidding? that's where all of us guitar players go. that was(and is) our learning space. if you've gotten anywhere in guitar, 95% of that work was done on the edge of your bed with your amp turned up as much as your parents allowed and nailing away at your favorite records. this doesn't surprise me at all. how do you think he comes up with his amazing phrasing that you see on stage? kudos john
@kunit135 Of course he's done it and still does it. I know this, I'm a guitar player myself. It's the same to say a brain surgeon performs brain surgery, but it would be weird to see him actually doing it.
@popcorny11 that is SO true..his collection is staggering. - man i would kill for that Yellow Gold fourth Series patek he uses..seriously that one is beyond nice. but man his collection must be amazing to have out and just look at.- even better if one could take some macros of those babys - guitarwise i completely understand him in this video..im doing the same thing these days.
@mayermusic those are some sweet licks man, are you a Peter Green fan? he's another guy that has a really sweet balance and touch between the major and minor, tone out of this world too
This actually is pretty helpful if you're like me and find yourself kind of trapped in the first position of the pentatonic scale. He's right about even though you're playing the same scale degrees, you're using different fingerings which can open up your soloing vocabulary. Simple idea when you break it down, but very helpful. Thanks, John!
Sounds like Greek to me but then again I don't play guitar. I am thinking this only make sense to other guitar players?? In any case, I wish I could play guitar like that!!
I have no idea what he is saying but still i watched the whole video because his voice is SOOTHING. And well, those pecks aren't THAT bad to look at...
John... you inspire me. Even though i've only played for a year, I find myself sitting in my room i denmark at 3 am having practiced for 8 hours straight, not having eaten an entire day but merely living off my music. I can't stop comparing myself to you as we're merely musicians practicing what we love. And i'm trying hard to be the best i can, but my resources are limited so i don't have an electric guitar yet. But still, i'm chopping away. I really hope you see this and respond. You're great.
@QueenToKingOfSpades Dude keep it up man! I can completely relate to you.. just choppin' away on that thing right? Keep it up, we'll fulfill our dreams, as long as we follow the passion. :) And out inspiration from John himself!
@slowhand633 he's going from scale degrees: 5, 6, 1 of the major scale. the 6th is what makes it major sounding because it isnt in the minor pentatonic.
on the fretboard he goes: B string-5th fret, B string-7th fret, e String-5th fret and back down.
@slowhand633 no, he's starting on the 5, then the major 6th and then the 8th or the 1, and then back to major 6th and the last note is the one he started on, perfect 5th.
Click the little cc button ( it's supposed to transcribe audio ) on the bottom of the video. It's hilarious. When he says "Here's something I've been messing with on guitar"
JM please come BACK to charlotte more than once a year- promo at UNC Charlotte, take me up on that! I'll even wear the bear suit you wore in your sitcom
@BradleyTn20 its a 9th chord, so do your first 2 fingers like a c shape and then bar the hgihest three strings. And yes, it moves up and down the neck like any chord, so thats a D9 hes playing at 2:54 (note that the root is on the A string).
I like how he still considers himself a "student" at guitar, when the rest of the world considers him a master. It shows he's still the same he was when he was 16 in his bedroom practicing at becoming a great guitarist, always trying to learn more.

@manu1695 Yes. You can use the Dm pentatonic when the progression (in Am) changes to the Dm chord. Revert back to the Am pent when the chord changes back the root.

does john mayer know theory or has he just figured all of this out by learning from blues greats and knowing your blues scale??
DocSixString 2 years ago
@DocSixString He did go to Berklee Music college for a semester I think. I'm pretty sure he knows his music theory.
C0NEZ0NE 2 years ago
