well...don't you avoid that when you carefully locate the compression stroke, then give a nudge? that way you wouln't gain momentum before you run into the compression
supposed to but it can still get you thats why its safer to do it off the bike, in the old days you always were on the bike to kick it, personally I always do it the old way tho I dont have a kick start at the moment but I will have again, "I hope"

You get used to kicking it on the bike, much cooler and faster but can sometimes kick back and get you a sore one, ouch
