I own a 2007 335i Sedan and have had it over 100 many times (up to 140), never had troubles with anything. Just giving you advice from an actual owner.
Your comparing apples and oranges. Toyota is in a diffrent class then BMW. And yes, I am sure a toyota cam is more reliable then a high performance BMW. But also, you get a 50k mile warentee from BMW. And they will fix anything that gos wrong. I had a 04 530i sport that I racked up over 70k miles on without any issues. I also had a M3 with over 200k miles on it without any MAJOR issues. I think they are pretty reliable for what you get.
@malex102 ofcourse its not as reliable as a toyota sedan ... its a lil bit more sophisticated than a toyota.... thus making it more unreliable. toyotas dont get from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds.
The overheating issue is completely blown out of proportion. You'd have more chance to win the lottery than having a heating problem on the 335i. Motor trend was way off professionalism by inflating the situation they encoutered in the desert.
wow! this car deserves much more! first! the 335i (stock) is regisering approx 360 HP on the dino out of the box! confirmed through car mags... 0-60 4.8 sec. on a 4 door!! carefull, car is much more.
the last model M3 had the same performance but as far as four doors go, when it comes to high performance being the ultimate objective the STi or he Evo are much better and faster options.
straight line? Yes... On a track evo/sti > m3. Hell, the terrain has to be perfect for a m3 since it's only rwd. Rain/dirt road, evo/sti > m3, no contest.
i love the E46 interior and exterior, beautiful styling.E92 is passible.

the prices for Europe are discriminating:
35k USD in US compared to 37k EUROS (325i).

Yes USD138,000 or so brand new in Malaysia too so not far off Scandanavia. Places like USA and UK are so cheap for cars

This car has serious over heating issues when pushed. It has been noted on several Automotive journals (ie Motor Trend) Buyer Beware!

No problems for 08 models, larger oil cooler solved the minor problem.

Just watch tsukuba battle. M3 always wins, even tho it's a japanese tv show.

It's not fair to discount fit and finish simply because, as you say, you don't understand how the car was built
