  • was it torpedoed, or something like that? Thanks for the vid.

  • @gusneaker She was not torpedoed. They were not allowed to use explosives to sink her, we had open or remove valves to sink her. We started in the aft end of the ship and worked forward to #2 Main Engine Room.

  • @tincansailor96855 Thank you for the info!

  • @gusneaker I was the person that was opening and removing the valves that sunk her. It was a one in a lifetime experience.

  • @tincansailor96855 I bet it was! Were you alone nside the ship? Wasn't a little scary or dangerous?

  • @gusneaker I was not alone, I was with the boss of the company that prepared her.for the sinking. It was a little dangerous because of all the holes that were cut for the divers, but I served on her for five years and knew my way around pretty well. Once we left her it tokk about 30-40 minutes for her to sink.

  • Were those Spruance DDG hulls so useworn they couldn't be kept in mothballs? Those were cruisers in size. I thought they were designed to be upgraded over the decades.

  • @Planetar17 Spruance Class Destroyers were never designated as Guided Missile Destroyers. The basic hull was used as the base hull for CG 47 class cruisers and the Kidd Class DDG's. Arthur W Radford was upgraded several time during her service. But, the design was well over thirty years old and newer ships have more capabilty.

  • The Arthur W Radford (DD 968) was made part of a artificial reef program for the states of MD, DE and NJ. She now sits in approx. 160 feet of water, 26 miles NE from Ocean City MD.

  • Where was the ship sunk and at what depth might it be at?

    Scuba Diver here.

  • Why did they sink it?

  • Sad to see, the Radford was the first ship I was ever assigned to in 88, it was a very good ship, rode out a hurricane in her lol.

  • The last one left, Paul F. Foster, is in Port Hueneme if anyone would like to see an old Spru-can again. It is now a test ship and looks very different from its original design.

  • God Damn Shame what they did to the Spruance Class Destroyers.

  • whow - so it is no more "Radford is Always Ready".... I will keep good memories of my time at her (Jan-Dec 1984), and of her crew. (Then) LT (JG) Joseph E.F. Wintermans, Royal Netherlands Navy.

  • You might be closer to the truth than you realise. Where do you think they might get all the spare steel for those new pipe-lines being built for the Keystone XL?

Probably from scrap ships being cut-up.

  • Why didn't they cut it up for the steel? Stupid.

  • i hate it when they do this to ships

  • @jhonsonrules1 Why?

  • @TheangryGhast because i am a nerd an like history

  • @jhonsonrules1 But it could be a artificial reef for fish

  • @TheangryGhast true very true

  • Cool :)

  • Sad to see her go. :( I look forward to diving the ship someday though.

  • Excellent. Thanks for the vids guys. I only saw the pic in the paper.

  • Nice video. You had a much better view than us on the ferry!
