  • Simon, why do you use a kick wheel. In your videos the students are electric.

    In this video electric with stainless tools would half the time.

  • Hi Sam - students who come here to do a workshop have the option of using the kick wheel if they want to...but if they are still learning to throw i dont recommend that they do. I personally prefer the kickwheel for precisely the reason that IT IS SLOWER, & more in keeping with the feel/flow of the clay & I get a better control of the speed .large pieces dont want high speed !!! .Stainless ?? I prefer steel anyday as it keeps a better cutting edge. SL

  • When someone is just learning, it's hard enough to concentrate on the clay let alone worrying about kicking the wheel. Walking and talking at the same time is a big enough challenge for me. Ha ha ha

  • Hi Simon, I was woundering if you could show us your drying room. or do you just do it outside. trying to get any big bowl to dry evenly seems to be my problem. jim

  • I just leave the pots in the shade but outside in this part of my studio .I turn upside down as soon as poss so bases dry evenly.Wrap in plastic to 'hold back' drying.Here in Spain we dry quick !!.SL

  • I second what Simon says. Definitely pack well in plastic; and turn over when the rim is hard enough, that the thickest bit (the base) dries faster as gravity pulls the water downwards. When you have trimmed, definitely leave it with the rim down and possibly even on a grid or something to allow drying also from the bottom - possibly with a plastic over the top. I have special drying shelves in my workshop, with mesh - trouble is - it isn't stainless, so I get rust which burns off in the kiln

  • when you showed the bowl at the beginning of the clip i thougt it was already trimmed!! That's clearly my problem, i leave to much clay at the bottem, so you can just see the shape of it when it's trimmed ... to much wasted time an clay. Sure need to practice a lot more! Nice bowl there Simon!Would be nice for a big family salad or pasta with meatballs, and on a sunday use it on the table with some fresh fruit,and for dessert i would fill it as a giant chocomouse bowl, great for the children!

  • People in general do leave FAR TOO MUCH excess clay ,in their bases which then has ALL got to be trimmed away- maybe they like trimming too much !! Use your throwing stick to help you get in there under & reduce your foot diameters ,& clean down the pot with the stick to the wheelhead, so you dont have a 'skirt' of clay down there. SL
