also, I think Obama meant that when civil rights were gained nonviolently I think he meant that those who led the movement (such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr) preached nonviolent means. This was not to say that did not invoke violent responses, (see the Greensboro incident). I don't know exactly what Obama said though, so I could be completely wrong, I'm just assuming because otherwise it sounds like a pretty stupid mistake that I'd imagine would be hard to make.
