  • somehow, dubstep brought me here

  • Uhm. Why is he wearing make up?

  • @Mofoe2001 The eye makeup draws attention to them, and makes them more expressive.

That's useful when you can't use a lot of body language, for instance, when playing the piano.

Also, it makes him look a bit funny, which is good for a comedian

  • I bet he likes to sing in G flat :)

  • @vukeidge "robotic vagina has over 30 times the views this vid has... Life isn't fair.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome!

  • 18 people actually have an idea about music or are professional musicians HAHAHAHAHA! xD

  • @Strap1205 I think it's the other way around—I appreciate this more because I'm a pianist and composer.

  • @Strap1205 i actually think this is hilarious for musicians :)

  • am I the only one seeing "Robotic Vagina" in the related videos?

  • @vukeidge yes... of course you're the only one -.-'

  • @brighamHB, same here.. Do you also have 'dog eating pussy'? Why Youtube, why?

I just want tim minchin songs there!

  • It's amazing he can do that. Totally weird :O

  • The first 30 seconds sound like something out of Mary Poppins :D

  • listened to this 3 times in a row lol

  • one of the recommended videos in my sidebar is "robotic vagina".... what?

  • Sadly, I don't understand this song. I'm not a music person and I never have been. I can't read music. I much prefer Tim's lyrics over his music, although I can appreciate that he is talented. But this song just makes me feel so stupid. I'm one of the people in the third catagory who 'can't tell there's anything wrong'. :c

  • @oxhello lol just listen to how off the singing pitch is to his piano is and thats the joke of the song :P

  • @oxhello It's like you took the note he plays on the piano (F), and like on a record player, turned up the speed just a little, so that's it's higher by "half" in the units of measuring notes' highness (pitch). He plays a 1, but prefers to sing a 1.5 let's say.

And it makes for some rootin' rowdy piana hi-jinks, a-hyuh!

  • F########### :)

  • There's something quite demonic about 1:32

  • @TheTomReid wtf r u talkin bout

  • @Flextaa The mouth moves but little else does and he seems to have soulless eyes - it just seems quite disturbing to me - like masks in a horror film

  • @TheTomReid Plus the extremely disturbing and awkwardly repetitive semitonal discrepancy

  • @TheTomReid ye kinda true looks freaky

  • Yet another demonstration of Tim's incredible talent, intelligence and refusal to dumb down material!

  • this is such an incredible skill...singing deliberately out of tune is so hard to do!

  • @BlackVeilSix66 Singing deliberately in tune is so hard to do for me, too!

  • LOL I play piano and sing and i can only just sing f# and play f major >.< I <3 U TIM MINCHIN!!!

  • F SHARPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The irony that most of this piece is in D minor... Still pure Minchin quality!

  • @lineonmeboys Well D minor is the relative minor to F major...that works theory wise i suppose!

  • @MrGIANTROBOT2112 well the comedy of the song is a bit lost if he sang "I love playing in D minor, but singing in F#" ;)

  • I was laughing through this whole thing then the last not finally killed me XD

  • at the end when they show the crowd you can tell which ones aren't musicians :P (ones not laughing)

  • Comment removed

  • Its excellent! Tim started out like Eric The Half A Bee there. Tim is fantastic.

  • As a musician, I find this hilarious, inspiring and also very impressive. Singing an F sharp against the piano playing in F has got to take some focus to say the least

  • ouch LOL

  • is he bare foot lol?

  • @szekelymihai yes. tim minchin is shoeless. lol

  • @tweakfreak87 Fuck the poor! lol

  • lol...that is just so wrong.....

  • I honestly think that any musician that has perfect pitch like me wants to kill themselves like i want to do right now after listening to this lol

  • @musicallygifted92 Well, you don't need a perfect pitch for that :>

  • I don't think I'd actually be able to physically do that. It just wouldn't feel right and would totally fuck my mind over so that my brain would automatically correct it for me

  • i'm a musician, and this is one of the most brilliant things i've ever heard:')

  • It takes a lot of skill to play one key but sing another. Bravo Tim, another piece of comedic, musical genius

  • Is it ironic that that last note, which he intends to be an F sharp is in itself slightly sharp? :) :P

  • 15 people are tone deaf

  • The first time I heard this, on the TV during the comedy proms, I thought he would say F Minor, but that is relative to Ab major, completely different.

  • Comment removed

  • The relative m3 of d aeolian is Fmaj, but he sings F#.

  • Haha! This is genius! :)

  • @codymann88 I noticed him too. He doesn't find dissonance to be a joking matter. -_-

  • @TehTpyoKing If he's tone-deaf he's most certainly missed the joke. XD

  • 1:56 Douchebag in the middle with glasses

  • How stupid do you have to be not to get this, even if you're not musical can you not tell that it is out of tune?!

  • Comment removed

  • if i could ever play such a grand song i dont think i could sing and play in different keys on purpose (on accident probably though) so kudos i guess thats cool

  • Dat F sharp....

  • lyrical genius

  • music-acicly

  • @TheJamieBellinger

Haha Tim could just sit there and drink his water for a show and we would laugh

  • 13 people like Rebecca Black.

  • MY EARS ARE BLEEDING

  • I thought he'd sing about programming languages :(

  • @Lumpiluk The name of the song would be C sharp in that case.

  • @kristjanfou afaik there's also a programming language named F#

  • @kristjanfou nope there's an F sharp language to from Microsoft research, I'm wondering when they'll release DFlat

  • lol even though its actually called Gb in this key.... still freaking hilarious xD

  • @gtxguitarfreak And the fact he's playing in F minor, not major :p Still cry laughing whenever I hear it though :')

  • I braced for that last noted, and laughed heartily. Good stuff.

  • F sharp is so horrid to play on the violin.

  • When they film the audience after the song, the first camera shoots musicians who understand the joke and the second camera shoots people who just didn't get it.

  • I don't fucking get it. But I'm music illiterate.

  • @Jankin47 Just trust me. Its fucking hysterical.

  • This man is a genious!!! Why is this man not sainted yet??!

  • @666jimmysmusicgirl Have you seen his song about the pope?

  • @MrPeanut675 No, is it good?

  • @666jimmysmusicgirl Yes, but it's also a proof that he won't be a saint

  • @Elex127 Yes, I've seen it now... not particularly good with religion..

  • Damn the punchline was predictable but it still made me laugh my ass off.

  • This is impossible to get out of your brain once it gets stuck there. I'm talking DAYS and DAYS of stuckness....

  • The note he sang at the end wasn't actually an F Sharp. It was a G natural. LOL

  • This really isn't that hard to do. Just play in D minor while thinking D major in your head. If you know what a major 3rd sounds like, all you have to do is sing it. Easy.

  • I'm a musician and I laughed for a solid 10 minutes after hearing this.

  • Comment removed

  • @CheckersPerson

He's playing in D minor which is the parallell to F major. And thus still in the key of F major.

  • Comment removed

  • @teodor91 Ooops xD Feel like a bit of a wolly now =3 thank you for correcting me :D But the point in principle still stands in my mind :)

  • @teodor91 D minor isn't F major... It might be the relative major but you still wouldn't say you're in F.

  • @NoSoup4you

yes you would, your in the mode of F major.

  • @teodor91 Not if you're resolving to D, as in D MINOR.

  • @NoSoup4you

though the MODE of D minor is the same as the MODE of F major, i.e. the same notes

  • @teodor91 Same notes, different root.

  • @teodor91 I don't think you quite understand modes. Just because they use the same notes, it doesn't mean they are the same scale. In short, he is in the key of D minor as he is resolving to strong notes within that key (e.g. D,F,A). When he sings the F# note, he is resolving to the major 3rd, hence there being a quite noticeable dissonance. It would however have taken away the comic effect of the song if he tried to explain how F# does not work within the key of D minor though.

  • @bomdelux I'm not saying you're wrong, but my theory is that the scale of D minor and the scale of Fmajor are both in the same mode. And D,F and A are all strong notes in the specific mode in question.

I know it's easy to get mixed up when translating so we might mean the same thing even though we interpret it differently. Though it's apparent that we both have an understanding of the theory behind the wonderful comedy that Tim has created :D

    Merry Christmas!!

  • @teodor91 I think here, the misuse of the word mode is the thing that is getting me. A mode is essentially a scale derived from the key notes, in this case F. Modes then are scales created from the F major framework, but however give a different colour when played (because of the differing intervals when the scale is started in different places). As the song resolves heavily to the notes D F and A, which are 1,3 and 5 of D minor, the song cannot be classed anything other than D minor. Merry xmas

  • @bomdelux I would of thought that the key is determined by the chord progression, if the I represents F major then its likely that he is thinking in terms of F major scale and the modes derived from it because all the notes are in key. If the I chord was D minor then the key will probably be D minor

  • @twistedthumbv2 It's not that simple, but yeah, it works along those lines. You can take into consideration the chords that are being used (and which are being used to resolve to) and the melody to work out the key. Like I said as the notes being resolved to most heavily are the notes of D minor (D, F and A), the key has to be D minor. If he said he prefers to play in D minor but sing in F# major, then it may not have had the same comedic effect...

  • @CheesyMacful I'm a musician and i felt your comment was a real waste of time... But thanks for putting your opinion on youtube. Kudos

  • By the way, the very last pitch he sings isn't an F#. It seems to me that he just picked a random bad-sounding pitch out of nowhere. So the pitch he ends up singing is a G. A very flat G. Not an F#. Just thought someone needed to say that.

  • @tjsaxman9 Doesn't really matter though, does it.

  • @tjsaxman9 Haha, a very flat G....almost like a sharpened F you say......

  • @superstar2559 No. I mean a flat G. Not a G flat. There's a difference.

  • I love this, but it appears that about five audience members got it :-P

  • @him050 I can't imagine anyone failing to get this. Even if you don't notice it sounds horrible (and even my totally untrained ears can hear that), he explains the joke at length in the song.

(Of course, some people might be deaf AND stupid - but would they go to a Tim Minchin concert? ;-) )

  • Don't think there is a note Tim Minchin doesn't tackle proficiently!

    Favourite sketch ever <3

  • Actual genius <3

  • God.....F Sharp is the worst key to play -.- Uuughh...

  • he has wonderful voice and i love his eyes ♥

  • @slipknot20000000 actually it's a contact lenses

  • phil daoust created 12 youtube accounts...

  • @rubbishrider861 XD i did laugh out loud

  • @N64isgreat :P while others who are not tim fans wrack their brains and think *who the hell is phil daoust!!??*

  • @rubbishrider861 OMFG!! HE MADE ONE MORE!!!!!!!!!!! someone has GOT to block this guy from youtube!

  • @rubbishrider861 he made 3 more since then lol

  • @envoy2500 :O how dare he!! or maybe it's storm?

  • maybe hes just singing a song ? ever thought of that music geeks.

  • @hahulee If he were just singing a song, there would no joke or cleverness, just embarrassment on the part of the tone-deaf singer

  • @thekrushori He is just singing a song, it just happens to be a comedy song. Like practically all of his others...

  • I want a 10 hour challenge beginning at 1:17 until 1:40 (1:23 - 1:40 loop)

  • maybe he's not playing in two different keys! maybe he's using a phrygian or locrian mode pattern!

  • that must have taken him so long to get the right keys! doing that is impossible if your not naturally tone deaf!

  • I'm practically tone deaf, but that still sounds soo wrong

  • god that sounds horrible:P lol its actually pretty hard to do... well.... i find it is... hahahaha

  • It's not so bad if you think of it as a b9 xD

  • Can't listen to this without cringing haha. So great.

  • although i understand this is genius, and incredibly funny, the dissonance still makes me feel like scratching my eyes out.

  • @lovephotograph I understand your pain.

  • @lovephotograph why your eyes? You can still hear without your eyes!

  • This song is hilarious!!!

  • Ha. Haha. It gets better and better every time. I should make my band director watch this.

  • Also. I was gonna say this before but got pissed off at stupid people. That would be so hard to do.. Like, he just nails the ridiculous note first time, every time. *Respect*

  • crinnnnnge

  • my ears :L but really clever to deliberately do that

  • And the reason I'm glad I'm a singer/guitarist can be summed up in one word: capo.

  • he has beautiful eyes

  • Comment removed

  • Everyone just needs to keep the peace. Enjoy it for what it is...comedy genius.

  • It's actually amazing how much this irritates me now that he pointed it out...

  • @DGneoseeker1

Why does it irritate you? He only sings in F sharp in this video

  • @muffin8or It's just the key he was singing at. It puts one on edge somehow.

  • @DGneoseeker1

    Maybe I'm different :)

  • @muffin8or Not true. He does occassionally prefer F sharp.

  • @fyonista

    What song?

  • THE WHOLE POINT IS HE'S SINGING IN FUCKED UP KEYS! THAT IS WHAT HE DOES TO BE FUNNY. Fucks sake all of you who act like you are gods of music and all who hate on people who understand music: get a grip.

  • The comments on this video about what notes he's playing and the key etc. And saying how funny it is that he is actually playing in D minor not F trying to make yourself look clever. Are even funnier this this video lol

  • F# inf my country means pussy in english \m/

  • i guess the comical effectiveness of this song is lost on the tone deaf. x

  • @henman9010

Not quite - the way he words everything is also hilarious! Also, even my tone-deaf ears can hear how off it sounds when he sings 'F Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarp'.

  • does anyone know where i can find the sheet music to this!!!!

  • As a keyboardist, I can totally empathize -- playing in F-Sharp really sucks. It's not an easy key.

  • 10 dislikers can't deal with bitonality.

  • Can I just say, genius?

  • I love how out of everyone who listens to this not one person has complained about the notes not being in tune. Even if you don't understand music you can appreciate the talent and greatness of Tim Minchin. Here's to hoping he'll start doing crimps with Noel Fielding.

  • as long as you can appreciate that F and F# are different notes you can get this amazing song....back down music nerds

  • People are complaining about music nerds ruining it...we just properly understand what he's singing about. End of.

  • @adelefranghiadi Music nerds? ha! its not excatly rocket science is it! lol Music idiots more like it

  • @teela24ecw you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. please leave.

  • @cheeseman4444 sorry i do know what im talking about he is singing a semi tone higher in his voice that he is playing on the piano. although, he is singing the whole way through if F major and is just hitting an accidental which is out side of the key.

  • @cheeseman4444 also i was said that the people who dont understand it are idiots

  • @adelefranghiadi Shut the fuck up you pretentious fuck.

  • @TweekDash for fucks sake chill out... no need for that.

  • @LaSeuleEtoile umad lol

  • **@TweekDash Seriously what? Speak english, please. No I am not mad, I just can't stand when idiots start using words they don't even understand. -_-

  • @TweekDash wooaaah dude, uncalled for, it wasn't pretentious at all! You're pretty pathetic giving everyone who comments and is musician too hate.

  • @adelefranghiadi If it wasn't pretentious it was, at the very least, patronising.
