Sadly, I don't understand this song. I'm not a music person and I never have been. I can't read music. I much prefer Tim's lyrics over his music, although I can appreciate that he is talented. But this song just makes me feel so stupid. I'm one of the people in the third catagory who 'can't tell there's anything wrong'. :c
@oxhello It's like you took the note he plays on the piano (F), and like on a record player, turned up the speed just a little, so that's it's higher by "half" in the units of measuring notes' highness (pitch). He plays a 1, but prefers to sing a 1.5 let's say.
And it makes for some rootin' rowdy piana hi-jinks, a-hyuh!
As a musician, I find this hilarious, inspiring and also very impressive. Singing an F sharp against the piano playing in F has got to take some focus to say the least
I don't think I'd actually be able to physically do that. It just wouldn't feel right and would totally fuck my mind over so that my brain would automatically correct it for me
The first time I heard this, on the TV during the comedy proms, I thought he would say F Minor, but that is relative to Ab major, completely different.
if i could ever play such a grand song i dont think i could sing and play in different keys on purpose (on accident probably though) so kudos i guess thats cool
When they film the audience after the song, the first camera shoots musicians who understand the joke and the second camera shoots people who just didn't get it.
This really isn't that hard to do. Just play in D minor while thinking D major in your head. If you know what a major 3rd sounds like, all you have to do is sing it. Easy.
@teodor91 I don't think you quite understand modes. Just because they use the same notes, it doesn't mean they are the same scale. In short, he is in the key of D minor as he is resolving to strong notes within that key (e.g. D,F,A). When he sings the F# note, he is resolving to the major 3rd, hence there being a quite noticeable dissonance. It would however have taken away the comic effect of the song if he tried to explain how F# does not work within the key of D minor though.
@bomdelux I'm not saying you're wrong, but my theory is that the scale of D minor and the scale of Fmajor are both in the same mode. And D,F and A are all strong notes in the specific mode in question.
I know it's easy to get mixed up when translating so we might mean the same thing even though we interpret it differently. Though it's apparent that we both have an understanding of the theory behind the wonderful comedy that Tim has created :D
@teodor91 I think here, the misuse of the word mode is the thing that is getting me. A mode is essentially a scale derived from the key notes, in this case F. Modes then are scales created from the F major framework, but however give a different colour when played (because of the differing intervals when the scale is started in different places). As the song resolves heavily to the notes D F and A, which are 1,3 and 5 of D minor, the song cannot be classed anything other than D minor. Merry xmas
@bomdelux I would of thought that the key is determined by the chord progression, if the I represents F major then its likely that he is thinking in terms of F major scale and the modes derived from it because all the notes are in key. If the I chord was D minor then the key will probably be D minor
@twistedthumbv2 It's not that simple, but yeah, it works along those lines. You can take into consideration the chords that are being used (and which are being used to resolve to) and the melody to work out the key. Like I said as the notes being resolved to most heavily are the notes of D minor (D, F and A), the key has to be D minor. If he said he prefers to play in D minor but sing in F# major, then it may not have had the same comedic effect...
By the way, the very last pitch he sings isn't an F#. It seems to me that he just picked a random bad-sounding pitch out of nowhere. So the pitch he ends up singing is a G. A very flat G. Not an F#. Just thought someone needed to say that.
@him050 I can't imagine anyone failing to get this. Even if you don't notice it sounds horrible (and even my totally untrained ears can hear that), he explains the joke at length in the song.
(Of course, some people might be deaf AND stupid - but would they go to a Tim Minchin concert? ;-) )
Also. I was gonna say this before but got pissed off at stupid people. That would be so hard to do.. Like, he just nails the ridiculous note first time, every time. *Respect*

Mofoe2001 3 days ago
@Mofoe2001 The eye makeup draws attention to them, and makes them more expressive.
That's useful when you can't use a lot of body language, for instance, when playing the piano.
Also, it makes him look a bit funny, which is good for a comedian
