I agree this is so much more thematically richer than the first 2 concertos and it sounds more mature. This was probably written after the 4th symphony? I don't know if Mendelssohn went thru periods of changes like Beethoven and others but the themes here seem to have more dramatic character than the previous ones. When I think of orchestration, I always think of 'Midsummer' and his symphonies but the work done here isn't bad. Who orchestrated it? Was it Henselt?
I can't say how much I love this wonderfull concerto! I defintively prefer this one even to the concertos in g- and d-! I wonder why it is not more known by now. Thank you for your effort to make it known!
Finally! Someone has posted the 3rd concerto, I've been waiting to hear this, and it doesn't disappoint! Very beautifiul, narrowly edges out No. 2 in D-minor for me, but I still think No. 1 in G-minor is tops.
So, is the piano portion 100% Mendelssohn, it's only the orchestration that is partly a reconstruction?
Now if only someone would post Mendelssohn's childhood piano concerto (A-minor).....
Yes, the two movements are reconstructed from paino scores. There is also a bit of a full score for the first movement. This is a good interpretation, but the one with Prosseda, Chailly and the Gewandhaus Orchester Leipzig is a bit more animated and passionate. There is a third interpretation with the pianist Matthias Kirschnereit, but I haven't heard it.

The pianist is Jennifer Eley. Unfortunately she was found dead in a swimming pool at her home in 2006. She was 44.
I will post the Piano concerto in A composed by Mendelssohn in 1822
