Like many all time great, melancholy saturated songs, this one touches individual listeners in emotionally charged, highly personalized ways. An important characteristic of any Art Form that purports to truly connect with an audience. Knowing the exact details/meaning/storyline/circumstances of 'Take One Away" is secondary to the powerful, broad overall message that
undeniably moves most listeners. An exceptionally inspired/ gripping trk. from Burton that penetrates to the core of your humanity.
hubby bought the Above the Ground cd for me for Xmas. It's awesome!! And it has a DVD of him in the making of it. I love it! The man is phenomenal!! He's 62 and still has it all!! I LOVE him!!!
Burton is my favorite singer. I haven't seen him much since he doesn't come to New York much but the times I've seen him in Canada, with or without Randy, were amazing. A few years ago I went to Toronto and saw Bachman/Cummings at the Molson Ampitheater. It was an amazing show. I like how his voice has matured over the years. A brilliant musician (great keyboardist) and singer, God bless Winnipeg for nurturing him, Randy and The Guess Who. I'll always be a giant fan.
hatchetwonder- you produced a couple records huh, yeah right and im a brain surgeon if you dont like his music why are you here watching it?, take your make believe record producing ass away.i love these losers who know it all -they sit back and whine and complain that people suck.get alife -burton cummings and the guess who all rock, STAND TALL IS A CLASSIC.

Ooh, that was incredibly original! Nice work on the attempt at putting me in my place and, best wishes to your lip spider and mullet. Long-live pre-1975 Burton Cummings and eternal slumber for Survivor-esque schlock! :)
Burton Cummings may have lost his WOW factor, but he can sing like no other still! I have his DVD with Randy Bachman, Running Back Thru Canada, and the First Time Around CD and DVD. He and Randy can still ROCK! Holy Moly! I think I like his voice at 60 better than I liked it at 20!! It's grown better with age, like fine wine!
Burton Cummings is still one of the best singers in Rock history. You need to get a clue! Give it up, you aren't going to get any support here. We all LOVE Burton Cummings, and you are out of your league here. Begone fool!
Have you? I have produced a few records in my time and my ears are the ral deal. PLease re-read my 2nd to last sentence AGAIN--research it yourself and REALLY listen. Get over the nostalgia, taking it personally and be objective.
Again, do your research and get over the nostalgia--he still had the rock-n-roll edge in '74 but then began the swift decline into schlock.I mean, jeeezus, not only he sound like the dude from SURVIVOR here, the song pattern/tone is pulled right from Survivor's cheesey 80's work (it was all pretty dreadful).Of course the cop fuzz on his face didn't actually bring down the giant--ah, hello, ever heard of sardonic wit?You must admit, however, that lip spider and mullet haven't done him any favors!
I have been researching Burton for a while now,and have found that the last time he even sounded like himself was a live show in 1974 on tv. Man, he really blows now-very forced and no edge/grit like on the Original Amer.Woman of yore. Just listen to his transistions--just depressing to listen post-70's. I think once he began donning the lame cop mustache he began going downhill--just research his performances cronilogically if you don't believe me. Sad to see a prior giant dwarf himself. :(
I just bought BachmanCummings DVD First Time Around (2006) and the CD Jukebox 2007 with Bachman and Cummings. They are still rocking! My 4 year old grandson was rocking to "Taking Care of Business", he made me play it 10 times tonight so he could sing along on his little mic to it.
oh man..--Take one away---one of my favorites songs...been such a long time since i've heard it, and man the music video..what can i say AWSOME...really just makes me wanna cry.......
One of my all time favorite singers of all time and my all time favorite songs of his.He deserves to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with the rest of the Guess Who...they are long overdue.
I do have it, and most of his other work, and most of TGW, which is my favorite rock band of all time. Burton had the best rock voice, bar none. Have you picked up the Thunderbird Trax?
yes i did ,i have on dvd tgw together again from 1982 all of the guess who work burton was involved with what do u think about the what kale did run to registor the ownership of tgw under his name with-out burton or randy present seems like there should be a court to decide that ,,,what i think well i let my feelings be known here and on ebay ...
cheers i have running back thru canada also also burton cummings on much more music in 2001 i saw tgw back in 75 as my graduation present from my mom and dad they gave me a choice a party or going see tgw easy choice huh..lol...send me a email with your address can send u a copy of 82 reunion took it from vhs
It's too bad that The Guess Who was labeled as an "AM" band. They were never considered "cool" enough for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but Burt sure belongs to be in it.
love this song sounds like a guess who song with randy on guitar

torontodave, I agree, that cd is one of his best! The sound quality on the cd isn't that great, but the singing by Burton is his best.
