The French speaking part of Belgium (Wallonia) is the poorest part of West-Europe, which caused largely caused the problems between the Flemmish (Dutch Belgians) and the Walloons. The French economy and military is bigger than the Dutch counterpart. Though the Dutch are much wealthier and there is more welfare in the Netherlands. Dutch education is way better than French education, though slighty worse than Belgian (Flemmish) education.

As the Allies found out 4 years later; the ground was unsuitable for armoured warfare and fast moving columns of tanks. Hence the failure of operation "Market garden". On the 15th of May 1940 many Dutch soldiers had to lay down their weapons without having fired a single shot at the enemy.

The French speaking part of Belgium (Wallonia) is the poorest part of West-Europe, which caused largely caused the problems between the Flemmish (Dutch Belgians) and the Walloons. The French economy and military is bigger than the Dutch counterpart. Though the Dutch are much wealthier and there is more welfare in the Netherlands. Dutch education is way better than French education, though slighty worse than Belgian (Flemmish) education.

Wat er dan vaak gebeurd is dat ze zich bij geen van die twee nationaliteiten thuis voelen of geaccepteerd worden. Soms radicaliseren ze dan en gaan ze zich op de islam richten. Hun straatgroep wordt als het ware hun nationaliteit. Er zijn andere oplossingen voor dat probleem, je hoeft niet uit te zetten.

Like the French the Dutch general staff still had a ww1 mindset. This army would have been quite good in 1918, but was hopelessly outdated in tactics and equipment in 1940.
Furthermore they were relying on the French and the British BEF in case of a German invasion.

If you have been neutral through a world war, and another comes along, should you expect not to be invaded, hence why should you stock up on military weapons in the 30's? Also, how so wwas the Dutch equiptment "in-sufficient" for 1940? They operated good air units, and a lot of fortifications and casemates, and their rifles were not much worse than that of the German Army. Keep in mind the Dutch did win major battles against Germany.

Popular myth states that it was an army with outdated equipment, which is only partially true. Airforce and most of the artillery were up to the same standard as the French and British, who were outdated as well at the time.
But the men were brave and fierce.
Hitler assumed that the Netherlands would be the same walkover as Denmark and that he could take it in 24 hrs.
It became 5 days in which the Wehrmacht took more casualties than in France.

Big difference was that the Germans had the initiative. Besides we relied on tactics that were hopelessly outdated.

@helmuthoorn the Dutch (referring to the Invasion of Rotterdam) where actually surprisingly matched and even brought the German war machine to a standstill. reason for the Germans to consider negotiations. they threatened to bomb the city if the Netherlands didn't lay down their arms. the negotiations where accepted yet the abort order towards the bombers came too late. resulting in the destruction of half the city of Rotterdam.
the only thing they needed where some well placed AA's :P

As the Allies found out 4 years later; the ground was unsuitable for armoured warfare and fast moving columns of tanks. Hence the failure of operation "Market garden". On the 15th of May 1940 many Dutch soldiers had to lay down their weapons without having fired a single shot at the enemy.
The decision to surrender however was a sensible one.
The BEF and the French were unable to assist and the West of the Netherlands was an isolated and surrounded enclave in a hopeless position.

@helmuthoorn there was no "ww2 mindset" in the sense that it was different from world war 1(im not talking about trench warfare). the germans just perfected the tactics they used to break through in 1914. German equipment was inferior on almost every level, with the exception of the dive bomber and artillery. Their tank force was pitiful in 1940. The dutch did do one thing right, they put every thing they had in the air, and it cost the luftwaffe.

what the hell are you talking about? Are you talking about Germany, or The Netherlands? The dutch(the Netherlands) queen Wilhelmina has already passed away, and she had nothing to do with the VOC (Verenigd Oost-indische Compagnie) that was active in Indonesia in the timeframe you are referring to.
Tropen Museum and Der reichs Museum are both German(Germany), not dutch(The Netherlands).

In hind sight it was a blessing in disguise the dutch army wasn't taken seriously. Like my grandfather said, after demobilisation, "the gave us a cigarette", like if they we're naughty boys. We wouldn't have lasted long anyway, Holland being indefensable flatland from Germany to the sea. It would have been brave to fight on beyond 5 days, brave but pointless.

For a "Middle Kingdom" of prosperity, or Mao's brand of communism like in Malaya? Did the "handful" of Jews have any influence in Indonesian politics and if so, what sectors of the economy? Did they work with the Chinese, or were they competing? Were there more pro-independence Hollanders such as Princen? Be precise and back it up factually.
