Actually Sanchez Vicario is the most overrated player of all time. She wuold have only 1 slam title the same # as Iva Majoli and Anastisia Myskina without the Seles stabbing.
Of course Capriati could NOT beat Seles when it mattered a few weeks after this match when Monica defeated Jennifer to reach the 1991 US OPEN women's finals.
That's OK... Jenn defeated Seles when it mattered in 2001 when she went on to beat Davenport and Hingis to win her first slam... very impressive indeed!
Of course your beloved Sanchez "overrated little skank" Vicario couldnt win a single slam during the time Graf and Seles were both on top and needed Seles stabbed and Graf going down with back spasms to win her 2nd and 3rd, then needed a revived Seles to take out Hingis and then choke away the final for Sanchez to win her fluke 4th. Of course Capriati > Sanchez. Now go back to your cave.
agree, as much as a like ASV, she ranks second in the list of players to benefit from the stabbing, Graf being first, Martinez and Pierce sharing the third spot... Though credit has to be given to graf for beating seles in one of the four slam finals they played, something sanchez vicario was far away from. She could not even win a set in the two slam finals she played against seles pre-stabbing...
I would say ASV ranks first in the players to benefit from the stabbing, even above Graf. OK Graf probably doesnt end up with 22 slams. She had 11 before the stabbing. Lets say she ends up with whatever between 15-20, she is still a top 4 or 5 player all time easily. Sanchez Vicario though probably goes from having the same # of slams as Mandlikova to the same # as Majoli and Ivanovic. Much bigger difference than Graf's status.
I dont think Pierce benefited really. She would have won the 95 AO anyway the way she played and 2000 is far removed from Seles reign even sans stabbing.
Martinez benefited only since if nothing else the joke draw that allowed her to gain the W title is altered with Seles added. If she plays any of Graf, Seles, Novotna, Sanchez, Nav on a better day than the final, he loses. Plus all those added tier 1s she won on clay.
Lastly I think Hingis might have benefited a bit but probably not much. She was a bad matchup for Seles except on clay and she never won the French anyway. Plus her reign was 97 and 98 when Seles was having off course problems anyway. You probably agree as you didnt even bother to list her and instead listed players who won only 1 or 2 slams.
Majoli benefited since she never wins the 97 FO. So my order of who benefited the most would be:
I agree with your 3 comments. I feel that Graf would have won more slams for sure especially on grass or he USO, but I don't feel she could have dominated the australian or french with a fit seles around. 100% agreed with your analysis on ASV and Martinez. I think Martinez benefited more than Majoli since she won so many tier 1 tournaments and had a horrible record against seles.
Anyway, the main loser is women's tennis since we got robbed of so many classic matches.
Well one thing to remember is Graf only won the Australian once after the Seles stabbing. Most years she missed it injured or actually had a bad result there, so it is hard to say she benefited much there as she surprisingly didnt do much there thereafter. I agree at the French she benefited bigtime, and to a lesser degree the U.S Open, but the French being most of all. I agree the biggest loser was womens tennis.
correct, but one slam is still a slam, and if there is one where seles was not to be challenged, it's the australian. I agree with you about the French as well.
Well I would normally expect Seles to beat Graf in Australia but in the 94 final Graf played one of her greatest matches ever and beat Sanchez Vicario 6-0, 6-2. I know Sanchez isnt Seles but she is a much tougher matchup for Graf than Seles, and Graf hardly ever beats her close to that easily. So in the same form I think Graf probably beats Seles in that particular final. Granted it is hard to tell if she would be in that form without the increased confidence of winning the last 3 slams.
everything would have been different anyway. Indeed, Graf's run at the AO 94 was fantastic, but she had played flawlessly in 93 as well, up to the final where seles showed who was number one. so it's hard to tell...
I agree Martinez benefited more than Majoli. Actually Seles had some major personal problems around the 97 French so was no lock to win anyway. Majoli was just really lucky overall that Hingis was fatigued and flat by the final , and she had dream draw with some opponents choking and didnt even play that well until the final. The thing is, with no stabbing, if Seles was even now atleast ranked #2 the whole draw of 97 FO changes and if Majoli doesnt get the draw she had I doubt she wins it.
I feel that monica would have bee affected by her father's problems, but not to the point that she would go from winning virtually everything to nothing (like the graf fanatics claim). Steffi had her own share of problems and still managed to win 2 wimbledons when she was supposed to be "in a slump"...
So yeah, the whole 93-97 era would have looked different.
Well the period I think she might have gone closer to winning nothing would have been 97-98 as this is where her fathers situation and injury situation became worst. Then in 99 it would be a matter of coming back vs some of the new contenders plus Hingis. This wouldnt have diminished her impact on Graf much as Graf won virtually everything from 93-96. Graf was mostly finished with injuries apart from a mini resurgence in late 98-99, and won only 1 slam after 96 anyway herself.
Regarding Graf's slump I actually dont believe she was in a slump anymore at the time Seles was stabbed. I do believe as a casual she was in a legitimate slump in 90-91 which opened the door some for the Seles rise and others. However the last year before the stabbing she had returned to top form and Seles still won 3 of the last 4 slams and beat Graf in 2 of the 3 finals. Seles had just improved that much that even back in form Graf was having trouble getting back to the top.
I so agree with you. indeed, Graf was not herself from mid 90 onwards, but in spring 92, she was as good as ever as her FO and Wimbledon 92 runs show. And indeed, Seles still maintained the upper hand because she had improved so much. The way she played at the AO 93 shows that as well with better serve than ever, some fine volleying and her tireless groudstrokes.
I so wish Parche had shot himself instead of harming monica...
I was surprised Monica lost this match to Jennifer to be honest. It was just a real surprise. Interesting Capriati was able to beat Seles at a smaller event but could NOT deliver at the US OPEN a couple of weeks later.
well what goes around comes around and this match is proof of that seles got revenge later in the tie-break in the us open which was much more important leading to a grand slam title.
Though not a massive a fan of seles's game, I respected her for giving graf a great battle when graf seemed unstoppable. Seles didn't posses the skill of graf and I will admit I was happy when graf returned to number 1. However you can't take anything away from seles, she was an unbelievable competitor
No, i preferred graf's style of tennis!! I thought she was a better player. Seles's game did not interest me. The double handed forehand is something i believe should not be seen in tennis.
if she was the better player, then why would she stay second to seles until a deranged man stabbed her? Because seles was the better player at that point. That's all.
it amazes me thath people can feel happiness when a crime happens... it says a lot about you, really... Graf did not "return" to number one, she gat it handed over by a stab in the back and a nasty vote of players... that's certainly not her tennis... she had won 2 of the last 9 slams, Seles 7...

Cool, Thanks for this.I remember watching this 15 year old kid beat the world#1 and feeling so sure she'd be there in the next 18 mos. or so.Jen finally got to #1 10 years later.
Amazing - a #1 player losing to a 15-year-old!
And Seles did it TWICE!!

at 4:13 that was clearly an ace it would have made 5-3 instead of 6-2.

Nope, it was way wide.
