I thought your Star Wars special FX joke was great (and all too true). And I cannot wait for Wreck-It Ralph, which looks (only from what I've seen) to be one of THE big hit movies of 2012.
But here's the thing: I think that both GameStop AND Square Enix were in the wrong with the GameStop fiasco. GameStop was in the wrong to make that decision on Deus Ex, and Square Enix was wrong not to inform GameStop in an appropriate manner about the OnLive coupon codes.
2 things, having worked there (not in the US tho) I can really say, Gamestop is the greediest, most insincere attempts at taking peoples money I have ever seen, BUT the image you has created is a little off.
The employees in store wouldn't be the ones who opened the game to take out the coupon, that was done at the warehouse. A store employee probably would have left it in either out of laziness or sense. Thats why they have managers who are bribed with the Gamestop convention to lord over them
Not surprised, Gamestop generally is horrible, and no I dont want a year long subscription to Gameinformer, just sell me the used copy of Okami already.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY stupid gamestop, kirby back to dreamland for the win mother fucker
@Dubhgall13 There is a slight difference: Using a car means it has sustained physical wear and tear.
Selling opened games as new games means you, the customer, can't returned it even if you haven't touched the contents. As it no longer has its plastic wrapping, there's no way for you to return it other than as a used copy, and we all know what kind of scam that is, giving you back tops 10% of the value of the game. That is fraudulent. The equivalent of tampering with the mileage meter on a car.
@xxhellspawnedxx you(and everyone up in arms about this) act like gamestop doesn't have ways of ensuring that gutted coppies of games haven't been open. As a matter of fact we put stickers across the side of gutted games to where if you wanna open them..or "break the seal" it'd show if it was opened or not
not sure how it works in the USA, but in Germany you have the right to return a game as long its not opened. So either they say you can´t return the game or there is nothing what is hindering you to activate the game on steam and return it for a full refund. Not customer-friendly at all
Best line ever =P, also its pretty scummy. If its not illegal, its very much a grey area, and it probably should be. Either way I'm pretty sure this'll bite them in the ass.
Go back to Gamestop they just (well not just) but just recently announced that everyone bought the PC copy they will give you a 59 giftcard and some kinda deal on some used games. so bring in your receipt or something and you supposedly get some kinda compenstation......I'm still not happy though.
I would never buy a game from gamestop, but my family don't like buying me games and don't know what else to get me, so they just get me coupons to gamestop. I keep on telling them just to give me cash since most of my games are bought through steam...
ahh gamestop, what is the hell is your problem? i swear to god they i think that they can get into a major law suit about this. sure they are you compition, you know what they should have done is NOT CARY THE GAME, or not cary the computer verison.

You know your bug bites , though im sure you think they are caused by mesquitos, could very likely be caused by bed bugs. if you get bed bugs you have to throw away your bed frame and box springs cuz they live in the wood .. Since the us government banned the use of the only insecticide that kills bed bugs they have started to plague hotels and if you frequently stay at hotels theres a likelyhood that you could have brought them home with you. Sleep well. btw bed bugs feed off you like ticks
I know the store in my town was like. Okay we aren't doing that, and they didn't even bother to take the coupon out because they thought it was stupid.
Too bad Gamestop doesnt give a sh*t about PC gamers anyway. Walmart has more of a selection than the 3 Gamestops within 20 miles of me combined. Note to self, "Don't buy from Gamestop anymore."
This GameStop thing is nothing new. When I used to work for GameStop, we had the privilege to take games home and play them for around 5 days. U would think that this was only used or returned games, but that wasn’t the case. More than once I got to take home a brand new game, open it up, play it, and then return it to the store were we would shrink wrap it and sell it as a new game. In hindsight this is pretty awful, but at the time it was like 'cool, I get to play a new game for free.'
Star wars 1,2,3 was no good no mater how good the special effects were.
They better made star wars 7,8,9 for much mony and put in less money for special effects. Special effects will be eaten from new zompies soon anyway.
Plus star wars the old parts (4,5,6) are now canabilasied by the new parts (1,2,3). ( I'm shoure I know some people wo would be able to make a better story... way better...)
Haha, Thats Awful! Game shops like that seems really desperate sometimes. Like, GAME here in the UK a little while back actually started buying the DSi (as soon as it was released) from Tesco's, because they sell it cheaper, then took it back to their GAME store to sell as their OWN fully priced brand new stock! That made me laugh. Oh. And When I click to have coffee with you, If you dont talk about physics. the meaning of life and puppies, I'll be upset.
The moment you open a game from gamestop it loses trade-in value. Gamestop is telling it's employees to open the games, thereby lowering the item's value according to the store's own policy. So, the game has lost intrinsic value before you've even bought it! Wow! How cool!
The games that have been opened should be sold as used games, or at a discounted price. Otherwise: Gamestop stands for everything ass-backwards and ridiculous in this world.
lol this was a huge blunder by Game Stop; putting aside any issues of legality, they just gave their competitor some huge exposure, as well as alienating their consumers.
Before now, I never even heard of Onlive; but after hearing about this story, the first thought that crossed my mind was... what a douche bag move game stop, and what is Onlive?
If you're say a retailer of gum, and I walk into your store and wanna buy an AK-47... You can get it right? It's the same principle. Each and every retailer has control of what comes in and what goes out of their doors (until it gets out of their doors). This'll backfire on them anyway, because they just gave the other company a whole lotta free press.
Just so you know. The Deus Ex scandal was not illegal for 2 reasons. A: This was a breach of contract with Square-Enix. B: No where on the box is this stated so something is not contractually obligated to go to the customer. The games were still new, just opened like they do with at least one of EVERY GAME they get in. Plus they have been recalled from Gamestop since Square knows they messed up. So you won't have to worry they are going to send copies without it now.
Yes, what Gamestop did was illegal and it screams CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT! Every single person who bought the game can join in a class and sue Gamestop for fraudulent misrepresentation in what they sold, because Gamestop misrepresented the games as new when they are not. It is fraudulent because it was known to the company and was done on purpose - apparently there is a memo to prove it. Eidos can probably sue Gamestop as well for breach of contract. I fully expect lawsuits over this.
@coolstream1 Because there are many people out there like me who's parents don't trust ordering stuff online/giving out credit card info especially to just buy a game. And the main stores like target or bestbuy dont carry as many games as gamestop does.
While I understand the desire to remove the coupon, It is part of the product being sold and by removing it they are taking part of the product without lower the price of the game. That's pretty much theft.
As a GameStop employee, I think it's ridiculous. I can understand opening the box for last copy games in order to advertise that the game is in stock, but purposely opening every single copy to remove something is just plain ridiculous. I also don't think my store complied with the email, either. Just dumb.
the games were Game-stops merchandise, they would have been perfectly within their rights to not sell the game, if they didn't want to. They would also have been perfectly within their rights, to buy the games as a product, keep the coupons for themselves, and sell the used to their customers. However, they decided to disregard their customers, and just remove them, then charge full price. unforgivable.
I think that i'm NEVER going to buy a game from Gamestop ever again! Oh wait what's that? I already DON'T buy games from Gamestop because there's this thing called Steam?!?!
Dodger, can you bring some attention to Operation Rainfall? Its an attempt to get some epic wii RPG games (already localized to english) released here in the states. I can't imagine what kind of politics would make a company afraid to release an already completed game in another market when the text/sound is already localized.
Sheesh, I hope Gamestop gets a huge backlash. Thats so so wrong. We don't need a lawsuit to punish them, lets speak with our money. Buy on steam or Amazon on OnLive!
The bastardos at gamestop open games and sell them like new all the time. One time I went in there to buy a "new" Borderlands GOTY with the DLC and since it was their last copy the box was put on display while the disc went into the drawer. Homeboy then sells it to me at the new price and when I get home and open it, the DLC voucher was missing. I returned it, gave them a piece of my mind, and shall never shop there again.
the thing i find strange is that any gamestop employee would comply with this. do they really think their employees are loyal? a teenager getting paid 10$ an hour to run a cash register is probably more loyal to gaming than to a shitty retailer they probably don't even use in favor of steam lol
@haxnerfplz $10 an hour? what planet are you living on? or maybe you're from a future where the USD has depreciated even more. i bet their staff would be lucky to CAP at $10 after working there for 6 years and starting at $7/hr.
@criran dude what the hell are you smoking. Game stop doesnt pay their workers below minimum wage. I promise. Gamestop probably gets 10$ an hour at the LEAST they would get 8 or 9... You are probably like 13? Once you learn about jobs then you can talk.
@crayola396 minimun wage is $7.25, at least where I live it is. Idk, maybe if you live in california or something they would start at 8 or 9 but here it's 7.25 or 7.50 for retail. if they did pay their enrty level guys $10/hr they probably only get 10-15 hours a week at best regardless.
and i'm 24, mr "crayola" no need to flame over it. its just the internet.
@drury2361 I don't know what's the situation for you guys... but in sweden, GameStop is almost always the cheapest (if you want a physical copy) and steam du charge overprice, for example a game i was planning on buying was 50€ on steam and 10€ on the authors site. (both digital copys of course)
US Federal guidelines state that any CD, DVD, Software or any copyable format once opened can not be sold and/or returned. Gamestop violates this Federal guideline with new games all the time. They open up one copy of each console game, to shelf the empty case and manual. They than put the Disc or Discs into paper sleeves and put it behind the counters.
Makes me wish there was an actual local video game retailer where I am besides sketch Play N' Trades.
Eh, I don't follow Square Enix anyway. And I'm damn tired of seeing OnLive ads on 90% of the youtube videos I watch (this one included) So I could care less who does who to what, people can throw fits all they want, it won't change anything "You stole my coupon, rawr rawr rawr"
I just got two games from Gamestop and they didn't work at all. Even though they say that the disks will work. Now that this happened, even though I don't like Microsoft or Sony people I would certainly say that it's bullshit that Gamestop did this.
we can all hate gamestop all we want but there is such a lack of independently owned video game stores (in New Jersey at least) we kinda have to purchase our games from there
Gamestop crossed a line with their gamecase fuckery although I have a stronger hatred for square enix and all their fuckery in the past so I dont know how to feel about this...

Re the Kinect Star Wars, it's....Star Wars. I'm gonna need to get it regardless of how good it is, just because it's Star Wars.

Why do people even GO to gamestop? fucking stop it people...
coolstream1 6 months ago
@coolstream1 Because there are many people out there like me who's parents don't trust ordering stuff online/giving out credit card info especially to just buy a game. And the main stores like target or bestbuy dont carry as many games as gamestop does.

I don't buy anything from EB (the australian stores owned by gamestop) since i bought Second Sight and the CD key was missing.
The guy at the counter asked me to prove it.
Anyhow, it's not as big a deal as me wanting "Kirby Wrecked Star Wars Themed Game Stops" to be real.

Dodger, can you bring some attention to Operation Rainfall? Its an attempt to get some epic wii RPG games (already localized to english) released here in the states. I can't imagine what kind of politics would make a company afraid to release an already completed game in another market when the text/sound is already localized.
kraun124 6 months ago
Sheesh, I hope Gamestop gets a huge backlash. Thats so so wrong. We don't need a lawsuit to punish them, lets speak with our money. Buy on steam or Amazon on OnLive!
kraun124 6 months ago
The bastardos at gamestop open games and sell them like new all the time. One time I went in there to buy a "new" Borderlands GOTY with the DLC and since it was their last copy the box was put on display while the disc went into the drawer. Homeboy then sells it to me at the new price and when I get home and open it, the DLC voucher was missing. I returned it, gave them a piece of my mind, and shall never shop there again.
DrummahMike 6 months ago
gamestop can do that as long as they sell the games as used and for a lesser price.
SuperSleepyDuck 6 months ago
the thing i find strange is that any gamestop employee would comply with this. do they really think their employees are loyal? a teenager getting paid 10$ an hour to run a cash register is probably more loyal to gaming than to a shitty retailer they probably don't even use in favor of steam lol
haxnerfplz 6 months ago
@haxnerfplz $10 an hour? what planet are you living on? or maybe you're from a future where the USD has depreciated even more. i bet their staff would be lucky to CAP at $10 after working there for 6 years and starting at $7/hr.
criran 6 months ago
@criran dude what the hell are you smoking. Game stop doesnt pay their workers below minimum wage. I promise. Gamestop probably gets 10$ an hour at the LEAST they would get 8 or 9... You are probably like 13? Once you learn about jobs then you can talk.
crayola396 6 months ago
@crayola396 minimun wage is $7.25, at least where I live it is. Idk, maybe if you live in california or something they would start at 8 or 9 but here it's 7.25 or 7.50 for retail. if they did pay their enrty level guys $10/hr they probably only get 10-15 hours a week at best regardless.
and i'm 24, mr "crayola" no need to flame over it. its just the internet.

crimsondragon20 6 months ago
I feel that Gamestop should have just returned the games to Square Enix rather than tamper with them
crimsondragon20 6 months ago
@drury2361 I could think of 3 very good reasons not to buy games from steam;
1. Steam don't sell all the games (not saying GameStop has)
2. Steam charges extreme overprice (in my experience)
3. CapsLock are for faggots

AznBrIaN1Lt 6 months ago

Makes me wish there was an actual local video game retailer where I am besides sketch Play N' Trades.
deilax 6 months ago
Eh, I don't follow Square Enix anyway. And I'm damn tired of seeing OnLive ads on 90% of the youtube videos I watch (this one included) So I could care less who does who to what, people can throw fits all they want, it won't change anything "You stole my coupon, rawr rawr rawr"
RavenTwoFive 6 months ago
I just got two games from Gamestop and they didn't work at all. Even though they say that the disks will work. Now that this happened, even though I don't like Microsoft or Sony people I would certainly say that it's bullshit that Gamestop did this.
TheRetroNintendo 6 months ago
If GameStop aren't happy with the agreement OnLive and SquareEnix have, just don't stock the game. The easiest solution is normally the simplist.

also since the copies are opened they should technically be considered used so the game should be 5 bucks off... Am i right or wrong?
