OMG, I was at this taping!!!! ... the only thing is, it was delayed by 3 weeks! I was there on September 13, 1986, but it was telecast ( in the Saturday night Live timeslot ) on October 4.
@cbaldwinjr Hogan and Andre didn't have that many matches, though. They matches they DID have were absolutely gigantic, but as far as actual money drawn over a long period, Orndorff is #2 behind Macho for Hogan opponents.
@UCKABAH Much of that is on the back of an outdoor card in Toronto...you know, The Big Event? Almost 70000 ppl were there for that event. So that kinda impacts those figures.
@VisionofOrion man this was an wsome time everyone was coked up, lookin healthy, on thejuice, no limits, strippers in the hotel rooms, it was great. i love the 80's.
Hogan headlining a Saturday Night's Main Event card GAURAN-DAMN-TEED the whole country would be up watching and the ratings would be through the ROOF!
Willwo go back to your mothers basement and continue masturbating you her dead corpse! How the fuck can you even think Hogan is anything? He's shit and always has been. And its Orndorff not Orndoff! Hogans a fuckin tool
how is hogan shit? if it werent for him wrestling would still be in high school gymnasiums and small areanas. how can you think that hogan ISNT anything?
how do you figure? before hogan headlined wrestling events they were small scale compared to what it became. there was no national promotion only regional. hogan brougth wrestling into the mainstream and became a national star, unlike to various stars other promotions had in various spots in the country
Willwo go back to your mothers basement and continue masturbating you her dead corpse! How the fuck can you even think Hogan is anything? He's shit and always has been.
Hey! What can you say, professional wrestling is the best! And to all of you that don't like it- that's to damn bad, because it will always be here forever, Diggit!
Holy shit I miss the 80s and 90s WWF. I, for one, NEVER got 'tired of seeing the red and yellow' and would happily have had more Hogan, Warrior, Savage, Old Taker etc through the mid 90s.
@wtf66611 : Agreed. WWE is a glorified reality-show nowadays and an epic failure at that. The roster is full of wrestlers that have no clue on ring psychology, their work-rate is atrocious, with a few exceptions the mic work is painful at BEST to listen to, and people overall are just going through the motions with no passion for their craft.
@D2Kprime I wouldnt say its the wrestlers fault, its management and the way they believe the WWEs direction should be going. WWE has talented wrestlers but poor management really.
@MegaRebel90 : I disagree. Even if the writing is bad the wrestlers can still put on a great match. WCW was notorious for shoddy booking and writing and yet the wrestlers still put on great matches. Likewise, you could have the best build-up and story line possible and still put on a stinker.
@flipgood89 : Only about the work-rate. For instance, on the documentary "The UnREAL story of Professional Wrestling" Lou Thesz was all over Hogan about his wrestling ability and so was Gorilla Monsoon, but they both agreed that Hogan was a great entertainer. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for Lou Thesz being one of the pioneers of the sport I'll take that explanation and book it. Vince made pro wrestling into a show, but the quality of the wrestling remained for many years.
@D2Kprime ...not true. I was able to grab almost every wrestling observer from the 80s, and Meltzer, "smart fans", and old timers ridiculed the WWF product. They pretty much didnt have one good thing to say about it. They claimed it was all cartoon, kiddie bullshit that focused on skits, dolls, music, campy comedy, and featured nothing but shitty wrestling. They would compliment a Randy Savage or Dynamite kid, but thats it. Its just all about perspective. People always rip whats current.
@flipgood89 It is true. You can see if for yourself. Type in "The Unreal Story of Professional Wrestling" in the search. It was a documentary done by Steve Allen on the A&E network.
You can hardly base an argument off of one columnist's viewpoint. Besides. Dave Meltzer has never been in the ring. The fact that ONLY Randy Savage and Dynamite Kid were mentioned as good wrestlers from that era in and of itself show bias.
The bottom line is that wrestlers of this era think the product is terrible. Not old timers. People within WWE have voiced displeasure with the product. Even John Cena has voiced displeasure on certain things. We all know how CM Punk feels about the issue. People do always rip what's current, and usually they have a good reason. The Classic era was good, the Federation era was great, the Attitude era was unbelievable, the PG era is fair.
Finish: What makes it so bad is that WWE has a lot of raw talent that if they were being trained the way the generation before were and allowed to wrestle the way the generation before were we would possibly see the greatest era of them all. But we won't see that because all WWE cares about is turning a profit by doing the least amount of work possible and if the quality of the product goes down, so be it. That's all I have to say on the matter
@D2Kprime ..I think its unrealistic to expect wrestling to stay the same, stylistically, as it was in the 80s. Look, times change --- you have to let the past go, and wrestling has to evolve to keep up with changing pace of the entertainment world. The 80s was a different time --- no internet, less cable penetration, no ipods, i phones, cell phones. Many cities revolved their week around wrestling shows, there was far less competition, and fans could sit through a 10 minute arm bar...
@D2Kprime (cont). Now wrestling has far more competition, and we are much faster pace nation. Sorry, the 80s aint comin back. The point I was trying to make earlier is that fans and critics alike were very much down on the 80s WWF product, now they call it classic wrestling because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but back in the day the WWF got ripped. People tend to not appreciate things until their in the past, and truth be told the WWE product of today is far superior to the 80s.
