I saved a crash last year by pulling on the handbrake to turn the car sideways - but that was in the UK - my US parking brake is foot operated and the car is auto.

If the wheels are allowed to turn freely ,you may be able to roll away from a potential collision. this does not apply to 4x4s as they have a constant resistance to the ground with the design of the splitter box.
I think they're getting out of their cars because they think they can offer more fiction to stop their car by using their feet on the ground, but what they forget is that their shoes/boots have just as much friction as their tires do, not more.
@XenoChrist94 dont pump them either. you need to keep your wheels with power always down shift or avoid going the posted speed limit. pumping your breaks is not good as the other person behind you may not be able to slow down quick enough and then your going to be in trouble again.
@tom201090 true but if you dont have a standard transmission your still likely to slide in an automatic if when using lower gears. pavement or not snow does not land in certain areas so not possible and into another lane would be good. But to be better then anything drive slow if the speed limit is 45 do 25 - 35 on down hill slopes.
I love how every car has the wheels turned to the left, but it doesn't do any good because they're locked up! When you start sliding, get OFF the brakes! Then at least you have a chance at steering. And for God's sake, don't jump out of the car!

there are plenty of SUV's with 4 wheel drive in the video and they are still crashing. 4 wheel drive vehicles are not any better on icy roads than a 2 wheel drive vehicle that is a very common misconception. 4 wheel drive vehicles just provide more stability, and only really help out when you are stuck in a snow bank.
Every one of those rear end crashes happened when the driver LOCKED THE BRAKES and would NOT get off them. The car WILL NOT STEER when the brakes are locked--the front wheels have to be ROLLING, NOT SLIDING for the car to be steered. Get off the brakes and steer around the hazard if you can't stop. Some of the drivers with better skills were easily driving around the cars that were piled up against the curb.
Most people think they know what to do in a situation like this, but when the time comes they panic. most people don't react fast enough to avoid a situation. If driving on ice was covered in the US driver's license testing, then maybe we could avoid situations like this.

I have a 2003 chevrolet cavalier (piece of shit) and This year with all the snow we got in chicago, + -10 degrees ice when im finna rear end someone i hold the brake till i get wheel lock, then when i start sliding, i VERY QUICKLY put it in reverse, and burn it for 1-2 seconds. Actually you can remove your feet from the brake and let the wheels begin to move again. The momentum will give you some steering control. So that perhaps you can drive by the other cars instead of hitting them. Another thing you can do is make sure to mount winter tires on a car used in a winter climate. Seriously people. Use your brains. This isn't that hard.

there are plenty of SUV's with 4 wheel drive in the video and they are still crashing. 4 wheel drive vehicles are not any better on icy roads than a 2 wheel drive vehicle that is a very common misconception. 4 wheel drive vehicles just provide more stability, and only really help out when you are stuck in a snow bank.

Every one of those rear end crashes happened when the driver LOCKED THE BRAKES and would NOT get off them. The car WILL NOT STEER when the brakes are locked--the front wheels have to be ROLLING, NOT SLIDING for the car to be steered. Get off the brakes and steer around the hazard if you can't stop. Some of the drivers with better skills were easily driving around the cars that were piled up against the curb.

Most people think they know what to do in a situation like this, but when the time comes they panic. most people don't react fast enough to avoid a situation. If driving on ice was covered in the US driver's license testing, then maybe we could avoid situations like this.

Ok what do you guys think. I have a 2003 chevrolet cavalier (piece of shit) and This year with all the snow we got in chicago, + -10 degrees ice when im finna rear end someone i hold the brake till i get wheel lock, then when i start sliding, i VERY QUICKLY put it in reverse, and burn it for 1-2 seconds. I SWEAR TO GOD this winter i did this about 10 different times and it has always worked. but, the guy behind you doesnt do it so i got rear ended 3-4 times. thoughts anyone?

no dude, that is a terrible idea. i live in chicago 2 & take it from me who hasnt been in an accident,1st off, u never want 2 put the car in reverse when u cant stop, & slamming on the breaks isnt such a good idea either. when u slam on the brakes u cant steer & tire tread fills up with snow creating a flat surface which is the reason u slide, the best thing 2 do is pump ur breaks so ur tire treading fills up all the way around ur tire 2 decrease stopping distance & u can still steer if u need 2

you get a ticket for speeding (too fast for conditions) . i know i know their going two mph but if the weather is that bad. Most state law says that you shouldn't be on the road. Then you get into a accident, because clearly that was too fast for road conditions. Police write the ticket and a judge will dismiss it end of story.

Dont tell me they all got a ticket for it? It's not their fault... they tried to stop but the road is just too slippery... I know there are drivers out there that deserve a ticket but these guys pretty much suffered enough by having their car get hit on. :(

Actually you can remove your feet from the brake and let the wheels begin to move again. The momentum will give you some steering control. So that perhaps you can drive by the other cars instead of hitting them. Another thing you can do is make sure to mount winter tires on a car used in a winter climate. Seriously people. Use your brains. This isn't that hard.
