I got an alexa right next to me now, it's a fantastic camera miles ahead of red. The alexa is a camera so obviously designed by an experienced film camera company. The red one and now the epic are very obviously made by a new company that has never made a camera before. Alexa is miles ahead, I love it.
Unfortunately, RED seems to be a company that thrives on vaporware marketing schemes to such an extent, that it does cause concern. Arri has the resources and expertise to stand behind their products, and in the business world this is worth a lot.
@famousPhotog *facepalm* Red is vapourware? have you seen how many movies have been shot on RedOne and future movies to be shot on Epic? Does it count for anything that Peter Jackson bought 30 Epic cameras for two huge-budget movies? I guess not...
@Chopsta123 Well, you have a higher tolerance for "Ted from Red" and the endless hype than I do. Where is Scarlet......... after how many years? How many months and years was Epic hyped? Companies that market like this get on my nerves. If my career depends on reliable equipment and service, I would rather go with Panavision or Arri, over Red, but to each their own.
@famousPhotog that doesnt justify calling it vapourware. You make them look like they have no usable camera out in the wild when you know its not the case. Epic took so long because they had to make absolutely sure that it works like a charm. Remember they had to learn everything from scratch. Also, where have you read that their cameras are less reliable than their competitors?
I'm a commercial/promo key grip, and I'll admit that I'm no expert in file latitude and resolution, not my department. What I can say, after working quite a bit with both cameras, is that the Red has problems all the time. Everything from the drive falling off, overheating, and an assortment of problems that require it to be shut down and restarted constantly. And this is with a variety of reds, and a number of camera departments. I have never seen an Alexa have any problem on set, not once.
For all the idiots, you not judge color in this test, nor contrast. Both cameras can be color corrected in million ways. The only thing that matters is the latitude of raw file. Which it does not show in this bogus test.
Why did the color correcting for the Arri come out "darker" than the red. Seems a bit biased / intentional to me. Like stretch contrast gone wild. Or it could just be the 5+yo LCD on my laptop...
First of all, thanks for doing this comparison. I have to ask... the 'pre-color correction' video... why is it so flat and gray, like the gamma is cranked. I've used RED on shoots (and am curious about the Alexa from how good it looks in other examples) but is this video intentionally 'raw'...? Both RED and Alexa files look terrible in this.
@Alvinwhatup2 @Alvinwhatup2 Because that's how you want to shoot when shooting digital cinema to preserve as much detail in the shadows and highlights. Then you color correct. It gives you more freedom than fiddling with the camera's color saturation and contrast settings. Here's a great tutorial: watch?v=2xTZtgApuDI#t=0m26s
@hogwashsentinel I applied a grey solid to a video clip i shot with my T2i turned down the opacity of the solid to 55%, rendered it out. Then I placed the rendered clip back into final cut, graded it, and I must say, it looks quite a bit better than grading the clips by themselves, thank you for tip! :)
Additionally, comparing flat before and graded after shots are absolutely meaningless... even the graded images are meaningless....
The best test would be to shoot a selection of scenes with film, red and arri and then see which of the 2 digital formats could get the closest final grade to the best film grade. I can tell you now who would win, and it ain't Arri.
Arri is a stillborn 2K dinosaur in a fast-emerging 4K world that RED has already mastered.
Hhhmmmm.... don't quite see how the 2 compare.... the RED One shoots 4480 X1920 in true widescreen..... with debayer that's a true 3.8K image whilst the Arri output is limited to 2K.
Price.... huge difference... RED leads hands down.
Moire issues on a RED? C'mon.... Not in my experience.... You can't judge this from a youtube video...
Ask yourself why major productions like Book of Eli, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Hobbit are choosing RED over film AND Alexa AND Panavision Genesis?
@SeanOcomesForYou Just had a play with Red Epic today, start up time is 7 seconds. And it now has a HDR mode meaning it will have a lot more latitude than the Red One (I don't think I need to mention that Red MX has more than 6 stops of latitude anyway). And the Hobbit has decided on 30 Red Epic's to shoot on. I think both Alexa and Red Epic have their advantages and disadvantages, very nice cameras.
Tackle, you can see moire issues with the Alexa aswell in the 2nd Wide shot. Of course it's hard to tell what's the camera and what's YouTube compression though
con tutte le cautele possibili visto che comunque stiamo vedendo un test su youtube comunque sembrerebbe che non ci sia storia ... a favore di arri naturalmente.

Alright, so I always grade in PPROCS5 natively. What would your workflow be for this, step by step?
If I added a grey matte onto another layer on the timeline, what exactly would I grade. The video underneath, or the gray matte itself?

@Alvinwhatup2 P.S. PPROCS5 i assume has something similar to the 3 Way Color Corrector that final cut has.

Hobbit has done camera Test with RED and ALEXA. Undecided as of now.
And the RED has a 4k scensor but does not capture in 4k.
ALSO why Alexa is better then red is because Alexa can shoot in Logc which gives you 16 stops of latitude. Red has what? 6!
Work flow is better on Alexa and much faster. Less menus so its faster to work with...
AND FOR ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HATE WAITING FOR RED TO START UP! Alexa takes 26 seconds.... not 90. it is just better in every way.
