  • I'm a huge fan. You are definitely one of the best pianists on YouTube. Congrats on a great performance of this plateau modal tune. These kind of tunes tend to get a little monotonous after a while, and it can be quite hard to keep the attention of the listener when soloing on this kind of a tune. I was attentively interested the whole way through! I keep watching it over and over. Lots to learn here. Everybody, take out your pencil and paper.... class is in session. LOL

  • great playing, where did you get the backing track? or did you make it?

  • Dude! Great playing!

  • the album is called KIND OF BLUE miles davis the album was voted the jazz album of the last century

  • the album is called KIND OF BLUE miles davis the album was voted the jazz album of the last century

  • Great playing......thanks for sharing this.

  • is that an roland fp-4 ? i have the same one.....

is that bass and drum coming out of the piano?

  • outstanding

  • wów_sùcht_mãl_ñAch:_geldeasy_Áûf_gÖÖglÊ

  • ok that was freaking awesome...

  • bravo très bonne impro je trouve .

  • I really like the annotation for 4:05

  • This is like the Jazz version of a chopin Etude Op.10 No.4.... technicality beyond the normal human capability 10/10 :)

  • What is the Red Garland technique around 1:25? What does it consist of?

  • yeah! very smart!

  • Well that was awesome.

  • I can't save annotations when i click view on video rage!!!

  • Thank you for taking the trouble to post this EXTREMELY enlightening lesson. I'm a guitarist, but this clip explains so much that is virtually impossible to grasp through the guitar alone - for my limited musical brain anyway. I have the Levine piano book (great!), but watching you go through this stuff obviously brings things home more forcefully. Many, many thanks!!

  • Those are some really great voicings you've got going on after the head!

  • Fantastic mate!

  • Cool playing and sense of humor) I'm just learning to play and such videos are very imprtant and useful/ and they make things easier. Thanx! Greetings form Russia)

  • awesame thanks :)

  • Wow! I like your ideas, they're very fresh. You sound very modern.

  • Fantastic! The most helpful tutorial I've seen.

  • That's very nice. Do you mind telling me how to get the nice drum sound at the background? Thanks

  • "Anything goes... Random Scale Patterns and Random Stacked 4ths."

I'll keep that in mind. Thank You.

  • Sounds great. Where did the bass/drums track come from? Can I buy that? Is it a play along?

  • simply awesome....

  • sweet..

  • Great tutorial man, I'll think about it next time I'm improvising over this in a combo. Miles Davis's solo on this track was actually the first solo I ever transcribed, back in my freshman year of high school lol. Good stuff!

  • Thank you so much. I'm learning a great deal from this.

  • Amazing!

How do you mix and play the scales from 4:49 ? Do you walk up one scale and down another?

  • Very good playing and vey very good tutorial!!!

    Thanks!

  • Wow! Very good! Thank you for the Class! God Bless you!

  • Absolutamente incrível. Jazz de altíssima qualidade. Confira a versão de So What do grupo Zimbo Trio, toque especial de Amilton Godoy... Belíssimo !!!

  • Fantastic man - really nice. Superb playing and just the perect level/pace/amount of instructional/educational prompts. Thanks for sharing :)

  • This is fantastic!

  • Good stuff mate!!!!

    Well played !!

  • wow ! thank you so much !

it is going to help lots of people

  • Just re-visited this. Really great explanations and playing. You take your solo so many different places with great build-ups and releases. Terrific self-expression and ideas.

  • Thanks!

  • damn -you make it look so easy

  • I like the way you think musically. Really straight on and no BS on the theory. You play really.......pretty too. Laterville-Nick

  • My Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!at 3:56 whew!!

  • Oops, I meant to say not just a repeated 4 bar phrase...

  • Cool stuff! I especially like (for example) the figure at 3:10 with the figure that is 9 8th notes long juxtaposed over the 4/4 (on the repetition it happens on the 'and' of 'one').

I was a little confused about the melody, though. As I recall, on "Kind Of Blue" the melodic phrases should go something like (two bars apiece) A, A', A, B, and same for the bridge, but not just a repeated 2 bar phrase.

    Anyway, very cool!

  • A, A, B, A actually.

  • wow, man... five stars. badaaaaass. I also like your annotations!

  • TENSION.

  • 4:06 was rediculous!!!! wow!!!

  • bravo... i like...you give me help!!!

  • For a minute there, I was thinking ... 'I did not realise that the anti nowhere league were accomplished pianists

  • i love the annotation at 4:05

  • @Pianostool lol I was just about to post the same comment!

  • that was awosome , your very good

  • I really love those half step pentatonic lines. Sounds like Kenny Kirkland! Bravo!

  • you're my new hero, you even quote Chick Corea!! if i wrote for jazzwise id announce you the prince of jazz.

  • Looney...

That was incredible. Love this song. great work

  • This was really great! I'd like to practice with the same backing track, but I can't seem to find it. Aebersold has "Miles of Modes" but doesn't give a track listing and playing samples only vields a slow version of So What. Is the backing you used in this set?

  • This is one of the first videos I've seen where the annotations actually are very helpful. I just bought Mark Levines book on jazz and I am beginning to learn the fundamentals of Jazz Theory.

As a musician this commentary is incrediblly helpful, and I appreciate the effort you put into showing the technical side of this performance (Which I'm still having a lot of trouble following but at least I know where to start). Fantastic job, I am subscribing and hope to see more of these!

  • Thanks! Mark Levine's book is an excellent resource of knowledge for jazz pianists. You may also want to check out "Metaphors for the Musician" by Randy Halberstadt.

  • Great job, however your playing sounded a tiny bit stiff.

  • dope

  • Good playing, and good annotations aswell, except that I'm pretty sure your wrong in saying that your using D7b5, it just sound and looks more like a bit of blues scale. But nice playiing anway, keep it up!

  • Good comment. You're absolutely right. I meant to type Dm7b5. It has been fixed.

  • lol-ed at tension

  • i play this on my bass

  • me too

  • I love this song! My dad always played it when i was 3.

  • smooth daddy-o

  • Very Cool!

  • TJ - you are awesome! can't wait to see you!WTF,Bff

  • Interesting!

  • Hey nice job... But if you flat the fifth of a minor chord its diminished..

  • You are correct assuming the minor chord is a triad. When you add a dominant (aka flat seventh) to a diminished triad you get what is known as a half-diminished seventh chord. This is the chord I refer to in the video. You can use the sixth mode of the melodic minor scale to solo over these types of chords.

  • yeah a great teaching tool is all kids need to brighten their horizons.loo

  • Wow! Thats wonderful!

I'd love to be able to play like you.

Must be real big fun playing like this!

    Its very helpful, indeed.

Thank you very much for posting!

  • this is actually really good as a teaching tool for other songs too like joshua and other mode oriented songs. For beginning boppers its tough to learn how to expanding and create good sounding lines when there isn't much to do chord wise. Great job

  • really nice....i wish i could play like that....

  • i hate jazz but u make me have second thoughts :)

  • Hey TJ thanks for the tutorial. You have some great technique. I am a pianist myself and I always enjoy learning something new. I will try to practice these tips. Keep'em comin!

  • Simply amazing! So proud of you!!!!

  • Wonderful idea to share your talent and make your playing comprehensible by making those - sometimes very funny - comments!

Wish I could play half as good...

  • I didn't like the begining but it was very impressive.

  • Pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.

  • Oh this is cool! Great video.

  • How do you program your bass lines?

  • really sweet:D But extremly hard for me:D

  • one of my favorite miles davis songs and its coverd awesomely

  • very nice and simple!!!

    sounds really nice !!!

  • geetay is hot.

  • Ya TJJJJJJJJ. Love it.

  • great

  • greaaaattttttt

  • Great tutorial on a great vehicle for beginner through advanced. You are a good teacher! Thanks. (Annotations are a big new addition to Youtube videos -- only about 5000 out of all the videos here have annotations...but they're coming because they are so helpful -- pop up video, remember?...the only really cool thing ever done by MTV...it's back i think!)

  • I heard this on npr and have been looking for it forever, and finally found it. Great video.

  • hehe,

    der damian will dazu jammn'

    komt voll geil ey.

its really good :) nice to hear

  • ja ja ja! thx

  • hey hey ;o)

just wanted u to ask again where u got the sample with the drummer and the bass in da background.

did u have it on your keyboard?

  • Wish I could explain so well what I'm doing when I play

  • Love this song...

  • The song loves you too...

  • wow!! nice! i love that style! its my favorite style because of its coolness

very good explanation of your improvising

    go on!

P.S.: where did u get the track with a bass and a drummmer?

  • guys, check out my TUTORIAL on how to add video annotations!

  • GREAT job... thanks for the effort!

  • Great playing tj - it is so good to see other pianists using the annotation idea in conjunction with improvised music where a good part of understanding and learning about the performance is to know what lies behind a musical idea. Other ways of communicating like talking over the music can spoil the impact of the music. And being able to add these to an existing video, would I imagine allow the owner to even answer questions asked. A great innovation Youtube - and very useful info tj!

  • Wow, thanks. Now if only YT could set up the MIDI for us... I hope this means when we ask you questions (that aren't already addressed in your videos) that you will answer with annotations. =)

  • which software did you use for adding comments?

  • What kind of keyboard do you have there? Looks like a fairly shallow action, at least compared to my board.

  • Great! Now I can play along without the real soundtrack. I'd ask my ex-wife to play the chords, but she's not into jazz, and she would hate playing on and on while I'm improvising.

    Thanks

  • you know im not much of a jazz person but this i realy liked this :D gd job.Btw how long u been playing?

  • Man, Are you a professional that just gigs all the time!!!! You are definitely good enough to have lots of gigs. You sound like the jazz greats. It seems like I'm listening to my jazz MP3's listening to you. 5 big stars!!!!

  • Thanks Craig. I play a lot, but more importantly, I practice a lot. Listening to music is also sometimes just as helpful as practicing. Best wishes.

  • I love your very own style and your harmonics!! great melodic ideas and even greater voicings!!! Keep it up!!!

  • Thanks Jazzfan, I've worked a lot on my 4th voicings. Of course, listening to Enrico Pieranunzi has had a lot to do with it too.

  • Wow...Per-fect.

  • This is great! Wish I had an MP3 of this. :D

  • I like the way you change your approach so much chorus after chorus, so many different ideas. Very interesting

  • very nice.

  • I think no need to give this comment negatives : he just doesn't understand jazz - I have often the same comment but in my case it's more true (sometimes)

    -

    BTW FANTASTIC 10 STARS

  • The bit you did at 1:15 blew my mind! Great work! *****

  • Oh no! I hope the surgery to fix it doesn't cost much. Thanks.

  • Unbelievable, for a moment I felt as if

"Lot2learn" he were playing, maybe because of the Roland piano :-)

    Seriously, great successful work.

    * * * * *

  • This is wonderful and original playing - and thanks for the excellent and very helpful comments you have added in the 'About This Video' above. Next step - add them to the video itself! Not too hard to do with a program like Windows Moviemaker. 5 stars

  • It's really great to hear someone's "personality" reflected in their playing as you do in this piece. Taking a tune and "making it your own" is a real talent - you've got it.

  • Was it a really good band in a box or the drums and bass were played by real people?

  • It's played by real people. It's an Aebersold play along book. Tyrone Wheeler (bass) and Steve Davis (drums).
