Spiro had terrible character and did abhorrent things as governor of Maryland, but this was by far his finest hour. This speech has a lot of truth in it, and I wonder whether this speech should be credited to his ability or his speech-writers.

Agnew intellectualized while he and Nixon lied, stole, and sent thousands of Americans to die in an illegal war. He and Nixon were crooks who both richly deserved to be ousted and to go to jail.

In addition to being a classy dresser, Agnew was very articulate. I never liked hippies and I still do not. They were a generation of waste. Agnew was an accomplished speaker, but I'm curious about what leads you to believe that Agnew would have mad a good POTUS. He was good at reciting political rhetoric, rallying the bandwagon, and irritating people.

Agnew was never a political heavyweight in the GOP. He never demonstrated any savvy in foreign policy, domestic policy, fiscal, or economic policies.

I still don't understand why Nixon picked him as a running mate.

But this speech brings up some great points. I think I read somewhere it was a huge surprise when he was chosen as VP candidate.

I must disagree with the beliefs that anti-intellectualism is somehow "good for the country". Part of the problems we face now are due to ignorance, combined with fervent beliefs.

Agnew sought to paint those who dared to question, those who dared to challenge, and those who dared to work for much needed changes in the same bandwagon of ignorance that Rush Limbaugh and his ilk have rallied so well.

Guess it beats having to think for yourself??

Let's set the record straight here-- Spiro Agnew was the Rod Blagojevich of the 1970s. As governor of Maryland he sold his influence to the highest bidder and robbed state taxpayers of millions. He pleaded "no contest" to the charges.

As vice president , he was a national disgrace. He once called Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii a "dirty one-armed Jap" after a Senate hearing. Senator Inouye is of Japanese ancestry, but he lost an arm fighting in the U.S. Army during World War II .
