I really can't believe what I'm seeing here. I see people being selfish and the video perpetuates this selfishness. I would like to know how a ridiculous event, like this, is funded. Because I really think that people should give their money to the poor, (not the church here, because they will just spend it on a light show) to live by Jesus's example to actually experience him. It isn't to "entertain" the participants, it is a gathering in faith and worship, helping others go further in faith, discern vocations, or maybe find out about religion for the first time. It's not a concert at all, praise and worship is a very small part of the experience, its a two day event, where you visit workshops, attend mass, go to adoration, listen to talks, and for a teenager, it is probably the first experience that you ever have with God like this, and if Jesus would be against it, why was he there at adoration or at mass? I also know quite a bit about my beliefs compared to that of other religions, so please don't make generalizations.t

I have always felt that this type of emotional youth experience can serve to "brand" a person to Christ, to permanently mark their hearts so that, during those "dark nights," their hearts will still glow with the memory of that intense experience, and keep them rooted in what they were at that time: not just Christians, but CATHOLIC Christians.

...there are many different modes of prayer and spirituality and different charisms of the Church...really, something for everyone.

I'd just encourage you to have an open mind about this, and not be too quick to judge something that has proven, over decades, to be a great resource for the young Church here in the United States.

Don't get me wrong. I've turned my life around for God and Christ and His bride the Church. And that entailed a VERY emotional heart wrenching change. I agree. From what I've experienced, it is ALL emotion based. They ENCOURAGE to "feel" God at all times. I don't think that's healthy.

Not for youth who are in the middle of 'finding' themselves, so to speak. To enrich a mind and heart with the Truth is amazing, but to allow the wisdom to stay there is more easily said than done. I've been to many retreats, trying to feel God because that's what they taught in my Parish. Holding hands at the 'Pater Noster', Giving hugs at the sing of peace RIGHT in the middle of the Holy Mass. Has anyone been to a Mass in St. Peter's Basilica? Now THAT is something else..

....we tell them at the conferences that they WILL endure hard times, or "dark nights" of sorts.....but at the Youth Conferences we create a venue where they can have a genuine encounter with Christ and experience Him in an intimate way....what St. John of the Cross would refer to as "consolation." That IS a great book, by the way!

If contemporary Christian music isn't your thing...that's totally fine. You don't have to pray that way. That's the beauty of the Church!.....

Hm...well, I am a youth that went to a conference this summer so I think I can share my experience: had the most amazing (and emotional) experience of my life. My life completely changed. However, although they told us that we would endure hard times and that what we felt at Steubie wouldn't last forever, I left not fully believing that and ended up desperately searching for and failing to find the same joy that I felt. It seriously messed me up for several months.

That's just my opinion of course, through many experiences such as this, living in a VERY liberal Catholic Parish, 'adopting' protestant movements and themes, etc... Has not the Catholic Church stuck to it's guns when it comes to Dogma and Canon law and what Christ taught? How about reading up on the lives of the Saints, such as Theresa of the Child Jesus, Jose Maria Escriva, Faustina, etc... Here's a book that opened my eyes. It's called, "The Dark Night of the Soul" Worth the read. God bless!

Not to knock protestant based 'christian' music, but isn't worship of God a soul lifting to heaven instead of emotion? From my experiences with Christian/protestant type worship music, it's been all about my feelings, and not about actually worshiping God. A selfish motive to 'feel' God in my life. I think it's a lost cause trying to make the music sound more like rock and roll although it is better because it speaks of our Lord and saviour, but not worthy of our Catholic worship. i just wanna say, at the adoration part - i stood up and said yes to God and the Holy spirit, and i just started crying uncontrollably! and it was amazing.

its like - that hole in my heart that i'd been trying to fill up with the wrong emotions like depression and anger, was now filled with God's love. and i've never experienced that before. it was life changing. So many miracles happened that night. i'm going again next year! I love you Jesus :)

Just got back from my second year @ steubenville, Ohio, thats where it's at!!! I recommend it to anyone who is like, "Meh" it is the best experiences of my life, hands down.
