I LOVE the way the Paul Thomas Anderson uses long take camera sequences in his films. For example, the opening sequence of Boogie Nights.
The long take sequence that took place after Daniel struck oil in Little Boston was absolutely mesmerizing. It also had a very Kubrick like feel to it. Master class!
Daniel and Eli came to blows many, many times as the result of a greedy power struggle fueled by oil and money.
In the end, their compromised morals lead to their demise. While Daniel is still breathing, he is by no means alive. He achieved his dream of becoming a recluse and became an empty shell of a man. In essence, they both died.
One of the best ending sequences in Cinema history. Two very different men allowed their greed, power, and cowardice, to ultimately become their demise.
Both men compromised their morals in various ways, thus turning their ultimate achievements into the primary source of their demise. I felt that the closing "I'm finished" line was brilliant, signaling the release of Daniels last real obsession, thus further sending him into a deeper spiral of depression and sealing his fate as a sad, bi
@Tkraemer81 I don't think Plainview had any morals to begin with; actually, his actions in this clip aren't in-congruent at all with whatever "moral standards" the character has set up for himself over the years.
When acting goes beyond that and becomes art! Day-Lewis kills it as a calmly menacing, slightly prickish man waiting to explode his maniac side and Dano is not bad himself as a pretentious preacher whom schemes and snivels his way to a pitiful end. Wow! Love this film!
That shot of him sitting in the bowling alley out of breath next to the lifeless body of that annoying overzealous preacher Eli, turning his head and saying "I'm finished" and then that music will forever be etched in my mind as one of the greatest scenes in film. Paul Thomas Anderson is a brilliant film maker.
One of my favourite scenes ever. It has the drama, the seriously black comedy (For me at least), the lust for power, solitude and his eventual turn to madness all twirled into a whimsical yet serious ending.
Well, Daniel isn´t that old. He's just ruined by his heavy drinking and deep misanthropy. But, even so, he's not refrained by any kind of moral, or fraternal bonds. That's why he first humillates Eli and then sets on to destroying him in such a horrific way. Years and years thinking over and over about it and, finally, he gets his chance to crush that little bugger.
Eli was a conman. So was Daniel, but he had the nerve to go medieval on Eli.
Daniel Plainview in "There Will Be Blood" and Bill "The Butcher" Cutting in "Gangs Of New York" are the same character except for hairstyles and accents.
They're both complete sociopaths with really big mustaches.
Gawd, I LOVE this film! Even the conversation Eli and Daniel had before he got on the whole milkshake thing is fantastic. Such a beautiful ending, the music is just perfect! This is on my top 5 fav films of all time.
@rachelfrench1992 no its a metaphor to describe his drilling and how he owns all the land around a piece of oil therefore he can steal all the oil underneath the land he doesnt own
