Khrushchev clearly didn't understand how the American political system would react to a provocative action that would give the Soviets first-strike capacity against the continental United States- his ignorance made it possible.

i think a point missed in the 'cuban' missile crisis ,is usa had nukes in turkey ,it was mainly their withdrawel that averted war ,but also that their placement into cuba was retaliating usa inc placing nukes into turkey, and now gwb wants to plant more [ok not turkey this time ], but the same neo con shell game

WRONG ! The missiles were put in because of JFK's Bay of Pigs Invasion (which besmirched the Kennedy family name) threatened the Cubans, hense 'Op Mongoose' which was to 'Assassinate Castro' and 'Destroy the Cuban Economy' Wiki The Cuban Project for smoking gun document !

Those missiles were obsolete & planned to be w/drawn anyway. The real reasons?
* We had a 10 to 1 meggatonnage advantage
* USSR was playing with fire in our own backyard
* Soviets had no 'Blue Water Navy' at that time to oppose us on the high seas
* Had they launched, the results would of been 20M Americans dead v 200M Russians dead immediately
Krushev 2 yrs after this would be ousted for this failure
